Life by JamieOne year ago I started a small experiment: I wanted to see what would happen if I committed to writing on Substack for a full year.
I didn’t start with a big audience or a clear strategy. I simply wanted to take writing more seriously and document the journey along the way.
In this video, I’m sharing the final update of that experiment — including my Substack growth, what actually happened over the past year, and the lessons I learned from consistently publishing online.
If you’re thinking about starting a Substack, writing online, or building a newsletter but don’t feel ready yet, I hope this video gives you some encouragement to start before you feel fully confident.
Building something online takes time, consistency, and the willingness to learn as you go — and this past year of writing has taught me more than I expected.
On this channel I document my journey of **building an intentional life, experimenting with creative projects, personal growth in my 30s, and creating online income streams through writing and content creation.**

Now I have 30 more videos than I did then. If you're still sitting on the sidelines, I want you to know how much can change in a month. I spent most of this year job hunting and it wasn't paying off, and I found myself asking, what if I went all in on my content the way I'd been prioritizing job hunting for the last 10 months. Thirty days in, I no longer believe quantity and quality can't coexist. And I no longer believe I'm going to lose my whole audience from posting too much either... turns out there are people actually looking forward to daily content from me.

#postingdaily #postingchallenge #dailyvlogI accepted a job offer after spending most of the year unemployedLife by Jamie2026-09-28 | I got a job after spending most of 2026 unemployed and job hunting for months...I'll be spending the last quarter of it with a full time contract role. This isn't my endgame, it's not even my ideal job, but it's breathing room. It means I won't have to start job searching again until the new year, I can replenish my savings, my emergency fund, my house sitting buffer account, finally replace my phone before it actually breaks, book that physio appointment, get back to the gym, and stop stressing over Christmas presents a couple months out. The real reason I said yes though is the hours. It's not a 9 to 5, it's a set schedule that gives me space in the mornings or afternoons to keep working on my content, which was my biggest concern about taking on full time work even for a season. but it's breathing room and i'm so grateful!

This one's borderline phobia territory for me, and it's probably the biggest thing standing between me and solo van life one day. There's a real difference between talking about overcoming a fear and actually putting yourself in uncomfortable situations to do it ....and I'm about to find out where my actual limit is, and whether the dream is worth pushing past it.

#feelthefear #facingfears #YTriseaunzI Dont Want to Ask for My Birthday Off AnymoreLife by Jamie2026-09-26 | This is Why I'm Building Something of my own...My boss once told me I had no life. I was expected to work on my birthday because I "didn’t have much going on."
The pit in my stomach asking for time off. Watching other people's lives deemed more important than mine. Feeling like my time didn't belong to me.
it's all these little experiences that are adding up to my choice to create my own thing...

#creatorjourney #unemployment #melbournevlog #ytriseaunzcreators need more communityLife by Jamie2026-09-25 | Someone once told me it was unrealistic to think YouTube could ever pay me, even part time. I knew it wasn't true, but it can be so easy to let a voice like that creep in when you're just starting out.
This is about how isolating building something from nothing in the online space actually is, and what changed for me once I started finding other creators first online, then in person at events here in Melbourne. Going from "keep your day job" to "I've done it, you can too" changed everything.

#smallcreators #smallyoutuber #creatorjourney #creatormotivation #monetization #YTriseaunzI think Im allergic to choosing the safe option...Life by Jamie2026-09-24 | the safe doesn't always mean the smart choice... I stopped treating those two words like they meant the same thing. I said this as a throwaway line in another video and couldn't stop thinking about it afterward. Growing up, and honestly for most of my adult life, I absorbed the idea that the safe choice was automatically the responsible one... stay in the job, take the stable option, don't rock the boat. But when I actually trace back the moments I chose safe, some of them cost me more than the risky choice would have. This isn't an anti-safety video. I'm still figuring out where the actual line is. But I don't think safe and smart are interchangeable anymore, and I wanted to sit in that properly instead of leaving it as one sentence in someone else's vide

I thought this would feel like freedom. I expected this big release, like I was finally free, like the opportunities were endless and the only way from here was up. It hasn't felt like that at all. Since the moment I walked out the door from living with my ex, it's felt like an uphill battle. Sitting at my computer receiving another job rejection email. A potential house sit cancelled last minute. It's not really giving freedom. It's giving survival mode. This is me being honest about the gap between what I expected starting over to feel like, and what it's actually felt like.

#startingover #30s #rebuildingmylife #YTriseAunz38 years old and single..am I sad and lonely?Life by Jamie2026-09-22 | Are you looking for a relationship? Do you mind being single? Someone left this comment recently and I wanted to actually answer it instead of giving a quick reply. I'm 38, single, and not actively dating right now, and I want to be honest about all of it, including whether I'm lonely. It's been a while since my 6 year relationship ended, and some of this choice comes down to trust... trust that broke during that relationship, trust I'm still rebuilding in myself before I'd feel ready to bring someone new into my life. Some of it comes down to where my focus actually is right now, on my own dreams, on building this life I'm rebuilding, and dating right now would honestly feel like a distraction from that. I also have some honest thoughts on what the dating pool looks like globally right now, and that plays into this too.

#datingafter30 #singlelife #breakupI stopped filming for a few days and it wrecked my momentumLife by Jamie2026-09-21 | daily posting has brought up a lot of things I didn't expect. I took a couple days off filming and it has been really hard to get back into the groove with this daily posting challenge. but we are still showing up!
Turning down a job offer while your savings are running out isn't a decision that makes sense on paper and I felt guilty about it before I even shared it, knowing how many people going through their own job hunt would have killed to get that far.
I got to the final stage of a job offer this year, and I withdrew. Not because it was smart. Because my gut was screaming not to take it, and I've realized I'm losing my tolerance for soul-sucking jobs in a way I didn't used to have. A version of me used to be able to suck it up for a paycheck. That version doesn't exist anymore.

#jobsearch #jobhunting #rebuildingmyself #YTriseaunzI actually thought I was the only one going grey this youngLife by Jamie2026-09-19 | Getting grey hair in your 20s is way more common than it looks like online...I just didn't know that when I got my first ones at 25, because all I'd ever seen was women getting gray hair in their 50s.
I believed I was out of the norm for years, and it actually made me angry like something had been taken from me. It wasn't until my 30s, watching more women embrace their natural grey, that I found out how many of them got theirs around the same age I did, after decades of dyeing it.
This is about that realization, and unlearning something I believed for years that just wasn't true.

#YTriseaunzI Used to Think I Talked Too Much, Daily Posting Proved Me WrongLife by Jamie2026-09-18 | Does posting daily on YouTube actually get your videos pushed more by the algorithm? Someone asked me that in the comments and I realized my answer deserved more than a reply, so here's the full one. The short version is no, YouTube doesn't reward daily posting specifically... it still rewards videos that keep people watching, that happens whether you post once a week or every day. But there's a compound effect that starts happening when you post more often, of course. but my big thing is that I'm trying to get comfortable with my own voice on camera instead of leaning on outlines and bullet points every time. I've told myself for a long time that I talk too much or go on tangents, so I built a habit of over-scripting to control that. But some of the tangents are the parts people relate to the most. I'm also hoping this challenge opens up conversations I haven't felt like I had room for when I was mostly posting solo day trips and day in the life content... conversations with other women in a rebuilding season, who get it. More views and subs would be nice too, but that's the bonus, not the main point of this.

#YTriseaunzI let myself actually rest for 3 days and it felt foreign...Life by Jamie2026-09-16 | learning how to rest in my 30s has been a challenge… I was on the couch, drawing, snacks, YouTube, nothing productive attached to any of it. I think I've been carrying this belief that rest has to be earned, and looking back at this past year, that's rarely actually been true. I struggle with finding the balance, when I let myself rest, it's rough getting back into momentum, but when I don't let myself rest enough in the first place, my body eventually says "we're not going back to that." I'm still working out how to make that transition in both directions feel less like whiplash. It also felt strange to say out loud that I'm 38 and still learning how to allow myself to rest without guilt.

#selfcare #rest #burnoutrecovery #YTriseaunzthey think I’m weird for not wanting this kind of life…Life by Jamie2026-09-15 | Being the misfit in a friend group who all want a "normal life" is a specific kind of lonely... the kind where nothing's technically wrong, you just want something different than everyone around you.
This is about that, and about the voices I wish I'd had growing up. Not people telling me what to do, just people saying I wasn't crazy for wanting something else, even before I knew what that something else actually looked like.

I don't remember most of what he said. I remember how he said it completely lit up, not worried for a second if he was boring me.
This is about that memory, and what I'm actually trying to tap into during this daily posting challenge finding the moments where I come alive, without holding back, and hoping some of that comes through on the other side of the screen too.

I went looking for that content too, early on. What I found instead was a lot of after, not much during.
Six months later, I wasn't in my bounce back era. Not even a year later. And for a while, that felt like something to be embarrassed about...like I was doing it wrong, or too slow, or behind some timeline nobody actually told me about.

come along as I spend the day soaking up the last bit of winter before the seasons shift, solo, slow, and in the city. Life in my 30s right now looks a lot like this: simple days, no rush, figuring out what I actually enjoy without needing a reason for it. :)
After moving out from living with my ex, I needed options fast. Getting a job and renting on my own would've taken forever to save enough to actually have choices. House sitting was the quickest way I found to get some back.
Six months in, I'd saved around $9,000. That number is the reason I was able to say no to a job that was hoping I'd take it out of desperation, not because it was actually right for me.
this video is a little peak into what house sitting has been able to do for me.

I don't know how people with full-time jobs manage life admin...basically one day off a week to do groceries, appointments, errands, rest, everything. it feels suffocating, and I don't think that's just "reality."

This is technically the kind of day I've been working toward...wandering a market on a weekday, no rush, no one to answer to. But I just got dropped back into unemployment, and there's a layer of guilt attached to enjoying it that I wasn't expecting.
So I'm sitting in that today, alongside a market wander, a solo lunch, and a stop at my favourite curly hair care store while I'm out here (Melbourne doesn't stock much for my hair type, so I stock up when I can).

The impossible experience requirements. The 10 step application process. The ghosting. The "we regret to inform you" emails after you've given everything. And somehow still being expected to perform like you're obsessed with the role.
This is my honest take on what job hunting in 2026 actually looks like ...plus what's genuinely keeping me sane while I'm in it.
my recent substack post: i'd rather burn it all down for a chance to actually own my days eight months of unemployment, a rigged game and the decision to stop playing:

This is an unplanned, raw few days in my life leading up to my first day and what actually happened when I got there. Mental health, meal prep, and making the most of a short term role...honestly and unfiltered.

I took the train, walked along Altona Beach, spent some time at Cherry Lake Reserve, went thrifting, and had a solo lunch date with Filipino food at Kumbira Cafe.
I also want to be upfront about something partway through filming, a stranger made me feel genuinely unsafe. They lingered nearby watching me film, kept invading my personal space, and tried to spit on me more than once, including riding towards me on a bike to do it again after I'd already walked away. I almost cut the trip short, but decided to try to enjoy the day the best that I could…
I'm okay but it's part of the honest reality of filming alone sometimes, and I didn't want to edit it out. I'll probably be back for a redemption trip at some point, because the rest of the day (before that) was actually really lovely.

This is what that day actually looked like.
In this vlog: a house sit transition day in my life without a car, pushing through exhaustion to get the basic routine things done, a cozy recovery morning that didn't go to plan, and an unexpected trip back to my storage locker that I really didn't see coming.

I seriously used to write winter off entirely...counting down the days until spring and wishing months of my life away.
Lately i've been trying my best to stop doing that. In this video I'm spending a solo winter day in Melbourne doing the things that are making the cold season worth it...warm sugar doughnuts at Vic Market, wandering through Fitzroy Gardens, discovering the hidden Tudor village, and finishing the day with a steamy bowl of pho.
