This is the start of a project I'm hoping will be fun. It's a story about a mysterious girl who wakes up in a forest. Then things happen.

Over the past few months, I've been slowly starting up my channel again. I'm not sure where to take it, but I think this is a good step. I posted a few things recently and stepped back and realized that I didn't want to rewatch the recent essay or any of the older ones I've done and that seemed a bit weird. I don't want to paint myself into a corner where I spend a lot of time creating things I'm not into rewatching. I definitely like researching the video essay things that I put up, but I'm done with them the second I post them. I still want to do things like that, but I want to always have something I really like going back to on the burner while I do them.

As such, it'll take a while for me to get Girl of the Copse off the ground and there might not be a lot of content on my channel until I get the assets together to more easily make the episodes. I appreciate everyone's patience with my channel. I know this video will likely get 50 to 100 views, and that's fine. The upcoming cartoon might not get many more. I'm just happy a few people will be into it. It's a great chance for me to do music, animation and storytelling all at once, which is good since I still primarily think of myself as a musician.

I'm guessing the first episode will be up in a few months, but who knows. I'll get it ready as soon as I can. If it starts taking too long, I'll throw some essays and stuff together to keep something going on on the channel. Gotta squeeze this channel in between my work schedule and married life. This video took a bit longer to get up than I would've liked. It had been a few years between this and the last project, so I had to relearn my software to some extent. Plus, I'm a lot slower than I was then. Lost that eye of the tiger. I'd better hit the gym, grab a pink sweatsuit and run behind Doc Louis's bicycle or something like that. Anyway, I've got some car trouble today, so I've gotta go out and wait on a tow truck. Maybe I'll give this a better description sometime in the future.

Katsudō Shashin, 2021 HD restoration of the first known Japanese animation - Early Anime Studies

My second attempt at fixing up this moment in history.

Katsudō Shashin which translates to "Motion Picture" is perhaps the oldest Japanese animation in existence. It was found in poor condition among a collection of old film equipment. This equipment aided in dating the piece to sometime before 1912. 1907 is often given as a potential date for its creation. It's quite short and was looped so it would repeat over and over as was the fashion for film at the time.

At the moment, only a low-quality version is available online. I tried to fix it up a little years ago and got it looking a little less jpeggy, but it was still a rough watch. I've been working on it again over the past week and feel like I've done a much better job this time around. We're all still holding our breath for a pro restoration based on the original film footage. Anyway, thanks for watching what I do with this old stuff :)

Hare and Tortoise - The 1924 Anime with superb line art - Sumerias HD Restoration

sumerias1 2021-05-05 | If you think you know this story... Well, you do. But what an amazing presentation of it! Sometimes anime isn't about whether you can predict the end or not, but just how amazing the visual journey is. Sanae Yamamoto's stylized line art is stunning to me and the whole thing has a uniquely evocative feel, despite its ubiquitous story originating as one of Aesop's fables written over 2500 years ago.

The talented director and artist, Sanae Yamamoto, was taught by Seitaro Kitayama, one of the 3 fathers of Japanese animation. The Hare and the Tortoise was released in 1924 through Kitayama Eiga Seisakujo, the first true Japanese animation studio.

Since many have complained about the lack of sound on these, I added an old tune that originates from the 20s, although it would likely not have been played over this. Feel free to mute it if it's bothersome.

Humorous Phases of Funny Faces - 1st cartoon animation ever - 1906 Restoration

sumerias1 2021-04-28 | Humorous Phases of Funny Faces is the first known animation on standard film stock. It was created by J. Stuart Blackton in 1906. It employs a mixture of stop motion and cut outs as well as some animation in which the drawing is altered between frames. Can you tell when each method is employed? Some consider it the first cartoon. You can decide in the comments!

This was a "restoration" done at the request of one of my commenters. Some of my restorations are better than others (I'm givin' the stinkeye to you, "restored" Gertie), but I think this one turned out quite well.

It's been a while since I've uploaded anything. My job has finally let up a bit and I actually get 8 hour days and 2 days off again! Hopefully I'll be able to do more with this channel soon. More Lovecraft, Anime and music to come!

Two Worlds (1929) - Anime Restoration by Sumerian Otaku. Press CC for Subtitles!

sumerias1 2017-12-03 | From the cradle of animation comes a dark anime take on the old Ant and the Grasshopper fable. There is a strong focus on the pitiful here. The large millipede carcass being dragged around in the summer portions of this adds a pathos to the most lively scenes. The butterflies and the frog, while presented as somewhat unlikable early on are never completely demonized. This makes it more unnerving to watch when they begin to suffer and starve to death.

What did HP Lovecrafts Voice Sound Like - Nerdy Sumerian Cthulhu Edition

sumerias1 2017-09-30 | HP Lovecraft has been the voice of horror for generations now. It's about time we gave that voice a listen.

For those wondering why it's been a while since I've done a Nerdy Sumerian, here's the spiel. After the 3rd episode, I reread ST Jyoshi's biography on Lovecraft and took 40+ pages of notes, intending to look at them a lil each day and slowly ruminate them so I could come up with better, more interesting and more accurate Lovecraft content. Being me, I immediately lost those notes. I found the notebook a month later, buried in the trunk of my car. By then, I'd lost the mental connections I had with the notes and they didn't click so well if that makes any sense. Dismayed, I focused my energy on the Sumerian Otaku stuff that I wanted to do along side the Nerdy Sumerian stuff. Since the format of the two shows is virtually the same, just with different subject matter, I kinda feel like l worked on the Nerdy Sumerian without actually working on it. Hopefully the progress I made on Sumerian Otaku has made this episode better. I think this live action format works a lot better than the poorly animated one I started with. Evil Mickey Mouse Attacks Japan Restoration of Toybox 1936 Omocha Bako propaganda anime animation

sumerias1 2017-09-29 | A restoration of the infamous anime from 1934 which predicted that an American army of Mickey Mouse clones would attack in 1936. Oddly enough that didn't occur. Let me know if you'd like a Sumerian Otaku episode putting this into historical context.

A fan requested that I restore this, so I gave it my best even though the original had less resolution than the 320 by 240 resolution file it was stuffed into. To give a comparison, the classic Gameboy was 160 x 144 giving the original file approximately twice the resolution of Tetris for Gameboy at best. As such, each frame kind of looks like a corrupt jpeg. Still, there's a lot more detail in this "restoration" than other versions online. I'd like to revisit this if I can ever get a better file to work with or more tricks to fix it.

The Sumerian Otaku looks into the intentionally destroyed and mostly forgotten anime, The Principles of Bombardment. It was a training animation created by the Shadow Staff of Toho to teach pilots how to operate the bombing mechanisms on their planes. These pilots would infamously go on to bomb Pearl Harbor with the knowledge imparted from the animation.

This is the first of a new format of videos I'm doing. I usually go for a fully animated show but I decided to appear in the flesh in this one. I know my onscreen presence was awful (all that looking down) but I hope to get better video after video. At the start of this vid is the intro to Sumerian Otaku that I made over the last few days. I think it has a good 90's anime sorta feel to the music. Even though I'll cover a lot of earlier anime, the 90's anime was what I grew up with. I'd love to do some stuff on that time period. It had been over a year since I last played out and I hadn't had time to practice like I wanted to so it has a sorta raw feel (read that as awkward and out of key :) But life is raw. And so is death folk!

Pauvre Pierrot 1892 Restoration - Very First cartoon animation ever (Emile Reynaud, Praxinoscope)

sumerias1 2017-06-11 | In discussions of the first cartoon, Pauvre Pierrot is often overlooked for 20th century animations such as Emile Cohl's Fantasmagorie. Emile Reynaud's colorful 1892 gem is still pretty fun, even to this day. In it's natural setting, it would be accompanied by music and have a narrator explaining the scenes, speaking for the characters and otherwise augmenting the performance. It would be projected from Reynaud's newly developed Praxinoscope, which utilized a series of slides somewhat like a modern slide projector. It was lighted by an oil lamp and separately cast the background and the characters from the same lamp. This made the creation of the glass slides easier because the background only had to be painted once.

The plot is simple. Arlequin sneaks in to visit his lover Colombine. Pierrot startles the lovers by knocking on the door and the two hide. Pierrot enters and begins courting Combine with a song. Arlequin frightens the would be lover by swacking him with a slapstick, and Pierrot flees. Arlequin is then free to march into his lover's chamber unimpeded.

It's interesting to see the the bridge between the centuries old Commedia dell'Arte from which Emile Reynaud drew and later cartoons here. Many things in this remind may remind the watcher of stock Looney Tunes gags: The way Arlequin looks around before he sneaks in; how he hides behind a post too small to actually cover him; how Arlequin remains undiscovered behind the post because even though he would be visible to Pierrot, he can't be seen by the audience; and the way he frightens the would be lover by tapping on his shoulder, at one point hiding behind poor Pierrot's back when he turns to look.

All in all, this is a fun display of just what magic could be accomplished by late Victorian era animators.

This is the 3rd episode of the Nerdy Sumerian. Hope ya enjoyed it! My apologies in that it has a couple glitches in it. I haven't had a lot of time lately and I'd have to redo the animation to get them out. This is another Lovecraft-based Nerdy Sumerian. I feel like I have a lot of Lovecraft material so I'll probably do a lot more Lovecraft videos in this series. The Nerdy Sumerian won't necessarily be based only on him though.

Worlds first Manga from the 12th Century - HD Chōjū jinbutsu giga 鳥獣戯画 oldest Sumerias Restorations

sumerias1 2017-05-25 | Sometimes held to be the first manga, the Scroll of the Frolicking Animals or Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga was created in the 12th to 13th century, perhaps by the Japanese monk-artisan, Toba Sojo. It depicts satirical scenes of animals engaging in human activities. The first scroll starts with monkeys and rabbits frolicking in the water. As it scrolls to the left, the rabbits and frogs participate in a game of archery. Next comes a festival and then wrestling matches between the rabbits and frogs. In the last scene, a monkey dressed as a priest yields an offering to the Buddha, playfully depicted as a frog on a lotus leaf. Nearby three clerics (a monkey and two foxes) are watching. Also depicted are a fox and rabbit praying with their rosaries.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. I had never seen a high rez version version of the scroll so I digitally sewed the fragments together and shined it up a bit. There are other versions on YouTube, but I think this looks the nicest. The Japanese folk music is taken from a public domain collection of International Folk Dances, originally released long ago on 78s (those really old thick records). The Battle of the Monkey and the Crab 1927- 100 Years of Anime restoration (early, old, historical)

Yasuji Murato's first anime, The Battle of the Monkey and the Crabs is a highly entertaining rendition of the classic Japanese folktale. Kantaro and his father Kanosuke, a family of therianthropic crabs, sow persimmon seeds in the garden. The Monkey, Sarukichi, is surprised and delighted to see they've grown a persimmon tree and offers to pick them for the crabs. Sarukichi betrays them and runs away. During the chase, Sarukichi throws persimmons at the pursuing crab, killing it. Kantaro (the son of the murdered crab) asks his 3 uncles (Mr Chestnut, Bee Honey, and Usubei) for help avenging his father's death. They agree and hide themselves in and around Sarukichi's house. When Sarukichi returns, they surprise and kill him.

urashima taro (1918) 100 Years of Anime Sumerias Restoration - early first

sumerias1 2017-04-22 | This is my attempt at restoring the NFC version of Urashima Taro by Sekaro Kitayama.

An animated version of the old Japanese folk tale. It begins with Urashima Taro going out to fish. After being bombarded by a school of large fish, he sinks to the bottom of the ocean. A large turtle takes him to the dragon king's palace, where he sees princess Ryūjin. He's sent back to shore and is happily surprised to find he's been turned into an old man.

The larger tale it comes from goes something like this. A fisherman rescues a turtle from wretched children who are torturing it. He later meets a large turtle, is given gills and is whisked away to the underwater palace of the Dragon God Nadraka. The small turtle he rescued has turned into the princess Ryūjin. She gives him a box and told not to open it. After 3 days, he returns to shore and finds that he's 300 years in the future. Sad to see everything he loved has passed away, he mindlessly opens the box and instantly turns old. The box held his old age.

My favorite scene is around 0:38 where the octopus- and fish-headed people are escorting Urashima. It goes by quick, but I love those designs!

sumerias1 2017-04-16 | To mark 100 years of Japanese animation, the Film Center at Tokyo's National Museum of Modern Art has taken some of the oldest anime out of its vaults.

Namakura Gatana is a story about a samurai who pays very little for what he thinks is an excellent sword.

Please Note: I had nothing to do with the initial restoration of Namakura Gatana or NFC. I take videos of lower resolution and use all the tricks in my arsenal to upgrade the quality of the video to offer a significantly clearer image and a better viewing experience.

This, while missing some frames, is as full a version as we're likely to get. I did my best at upping the look and quality. It's awesome to finally see the (nearly) full version. This has been a long time coming. Ever since my old band Disinter creaked to a halt around '99 or so, I've gone from musical genre to genre with whoever would have me. Pop, punk, experimental, folk; It was all fun really, but I had to put most of my focus on school. After grad school, I started focusing on death folk, initially because the only instruments I had at the time were my old bass guitar and my girlfriend's acoustic guitar, but I really grew to love the freedom I have with the death folk genre. As there are very few bands playing this style, there really aren't any set rules. Plus, I'd always wanted a chance to experiment with death metal vocals over acoustic guitar. Walpurgis Night is a full circle for me. It's my first recorded return to the death metal I was reared on. Since it's purely death metal and not at all folky, I'm listing the artist as Sumerias Dis (as in Disinter or the city of Dis). Thanks to my small but devoted core audience. It really would be hard to put this much energy into this stuff without you.

How Lovecraft Pronounced Cthulhu (and How We Know he Did) - Sumerian Nerd- Pronunciation Pronounce

sumerias1 2017-01-28 | This is guide to the pronunciation of H. P. Lovecraft's horrifying (and adorrifying) abomination. Hopefully some will find it helpful.

It's based on Lovecraft's approximated pronunciation which he gave with the following passage. "The name of the hellish entity was invented by beings whose vocal organs were not like man's, hence it has no relation to the human speech equipment. The syllables were determined by a physiological equipment wholly unlike ours, hence could never be uttered perfectly by human throats ... The actual sound -- as nearly as any human organs could imitate it or human letters record it -- may be taken as something like Khlûl'-hloo, with the first syllable pronounced gutturally and very thickly. The u is about like that in full; and the first syllable is not unlike klul in sound, hence the h represents the guttural thickness."

sumerias1 2016-10-27 | The love song of Salome and Herod. Can the head of John the Baptist finally bring these two lovebirds together?

Lyrically, The Jewels of Salome is a playful reworking of that brief but colorful recounting of the death of John the Baptist appearing in Mark and Matthew. It reminds Simaitha of Trump and his daughter's relationship ;) It was meant to be fun more than anything. Which isn't to say there's not something going on a little deeper. My version is perhaps more akin to Oscar Wilde's than Mark or John's, but not particularly based on it. Salome, like in Wilde's, desires to kiss John the Baptist. John the Baptist represents permanence, immortality, stability. All the things Salome desires but knows she can't have. Herod represents all the best the world has to offer. The world cannot offer her permanence, however. Herod seeks Salome and Salome seeks something more. More than a pervy old man like Herod, anyway. But then John the Baptist is no Chippendale either. For the baptist's looks, I went with the wilder (or Wilde-er) images of him and thought back to the words that Oscar Wilde put into Salome's mouth when she described John the Baptist as having, "the body of a leper. It is like a plastered wall where vipers have crawled; like a plastered wall where the scorpions have made their nest." Is there more for Salome? In the video, she definitely has a happy ending, canoodling her brand new baptist head, so in the context of the video, I say yes. For other Salomes in the real world, I'd like to say yes. I hope we can all find what we want.

This was originally going to be a quick video and the song was only about a minute long. It was really just going to show Salome dancing and Herod lusting. The song seemed to need to be longer, so I rewrote it to 3 minutes. I couldn't find a good melody, so it was only going to use death metal vocals. I have a version with death metal vocals only that works fine if anyone wants me to post it, but it pales in comparison to the final product. But when Simaitha heard it, she really loved the lyrics and music. She decided to sing with me on it for the first time in years. At that point, I really wanted the video to be cool since it was so special to me and her, so I really tried to make it shine. This is my first video with a deleted scene (John the Baptist's head is brought to Salome on a silver platter). It was 20 seconds long and I couldn't find a good way to incorporate it into the video. Mebbe I'll post that sometime if anyone wants it. Or find a way to use it elsewhere.

For those unfamiliar with the biblical story, here are the nuts and bolts of it. Herod is a ruler who has John the Baptist arrested because he won't recognize his second marriage with Herodias. Herodias remains angry at John the Baptist and gets a chance at revenge when her daughter Salome dances for Herod at a fancy get-together. Herod, pleased by his daughter in law's dance offers her anything she wants, "up to half of my kingdom". She consorts with her mother Herodias and asks for John the Baptist's head on a platter. In various retellings of the story, Herod is portrayed alternately as a good man, a coward and a slimy horndog likely due to his two representations in the bible and Oscar Wilde's famous play. In Mark, Herod is buddies with John the Baptist and doesn't want to kill him because he digs listening to him. In Matthew, Herod wanted to kill John all along, but the people of the region revered John as a prophet so he felt it best not to stir up riots. And Wilde's version brings Salome to the forefront while embellishing if not introducing the lust of Herod for Salome as a motivating force.
