This installment of our AEA Sessions video series features New York-based singer-songwriter, Mitski, as she performs three songs from her 2016 album, ‘Puberty 2’.
Alone with her guitar and washed in a warm, orange glow, Mitski delivers dynamic performances that explore a range of texture and tone. In ‘My Body Is Made Of Crushed Little Stars’, she sings of youthful restlessness while her guitar roars with energy and ferocity. In contrast, her words of somber sympathy in ‘I Bet On Losing Dogs’ ring most true atop her delicate finger-picked guitar playing.
In these sessions, Mitski’s voice and guitar come together to create singular, evocative moments that linger in the mind. To best capture these moments, we rely on the simple, but effective combination of the near-field N22 and far-field, stereo R88.
Both Mitski’s vocal and guitar cab are recorded by the near-field NUVO N22, while the stereo R88 records the room.
The AEA sessions is a collaboration between filmmaker and recording engineer Alex Chaloff and AEA Microphones. The motivation behind this project is to pair highly stylized video with pristine audio to showcase some of the finest microphones and musicians in the world.

The RPQ3 also includes an expanded EQ section with boost and cut controls for both low and high end as well as a new low-end frequency sweep to identify and eliminate rumbles and resonances. The RPQ3 was designed to work great on passive ribbon microphones, however, when a preamp works well with a passive ribbon microphone, it will excel on every microphone. At once open, transparent, and musical, the RPQ3 is a versatile tool for the front end of any signal path. As with all AEA electronics, the circuit in the RPQ3 was designed by Fred Forssell.
In this previously unreleased AEA Sessions video from 2020, the featured artist is Andy Shauf. He performs a stripped-down version of "Changer," which is the final track from his 2020 album "The Neon Skyline." The performance consists solely of Shauf's voice and guitar, providing a raw and intimate listening experience.
The KU5A was developed with the vocalist in mind. Its end-address directionality and tight supercardioid pattern make it ideal for focusing on a vocal while rejecting excessive bleed from other sources in a space. The N22 is a near-field ribbon microphone adept at capturing instruments from close up, with less low-end proximity effect. These mics work together brilliantly to capture a singer-songwriter like Andy Shauf
(Although the R88 appears in the video, none of its signal was used in the final mix.)

Our latest AEA Session features three mighty AEA R44s capturing the Too Marvelous Trio as they perform Nat King Cole’s ‘This Is My Night To Dream’. A tribute to the great Nat King Cole Trio, the Too Marvelous Trio implements the same guitar, upright bass, and piano format that Nat King Cole relied on to record countless classic jazz recordings.
One active A440 microphone captures the piano and vocal simultaneously, while another captures the upright bass. The guitar is recorded by an R44CX. The resulting sound brilliantly demonstrates the expansive sonic range of the AEA R44 series microphones.

Pro Tools software and Avid I/O at 96k/24bit
The AEA sessions is a collaboration between filmmaker and recording engineer Alex Chaloff and AEA Microphones. The motivation behind this project is to pair highly stylized video with pristine audio to showcase some of the finest microphones and musicians in the world.
This installation of AEA Sessions features the harmonious duo, Short & Sweet, comprising Liz Beebe and Z. Lupetin of The Dustbowl Revival, as they perform an original track, 'Let It Go', into an R84A and N22.
Their performance is reminiscent of classic methods of vocal harmony recording in which two or more vocalists surround one mic to track organic, live harmonies. The pair sing words of self-forgiveness that embrace the power of the present moment and reflect the simplicity of their performance style. The active R84A supplies rich warmth to the vocals as the N22 provides detail and clarity to the finger-picked guitar and rhythmic finger-snapping.
The R84A and N22 run through the newly issued TRP2 and an R88 runs through RPQ500's to record a guitar amp with echo effect.

All tracks are without equalization or compression and the reverb is provided by a plate reverb unit.
