Students Kate Langille Richard Fernandes joined me for the celebratory event—one that hasn’t failed to lift my spirits since we first flew it for the first time three years ago.
In that time, there has been a terrible, dispiriting battle waged against Two-Spirit, Trans and Queer people trying to live a life of peace, dignity and happiness. It isn’t new, sadly.
Nor is it new that we raise the flag as a symbol of protest as much as celebration.
Much like other marginalized communities who face oppression, our joy, too, is protest.
And so I invite you to join in this joy. You can find out how on our Pride webpage: royalroads.ca/pride

Post-secondary institutions everywhere are asking how they can improve equity, diversity and inclusion on campus — with tons of good ideas and mixed success — but the most important leadership in this area is coming from students.
In his ground-breaking research, Mizzi asked participants to share their experiences with different spaces around their campuses in Manitoba and how they would redesign them to be safe, inclusive and affirming for 2SLGBTQQ+ people. Participants were even given the chance to mark down changes on their campus map.

“It’s about helping kids look at science and think, ‘I could do that. That would be really cool to do when I grow up.'” - Dr. Mickie Noble.

Hosted by President Philip Steenkamp and facilitated by Associate Director, Human Rights and EDI Alejandro Campos Garcia.
Literature, film, new media and other modes of cultural production are not singular fields, but interwoven modes of storytelling through which human life and people’s desires and hopes for a better world can be understood.
Using South Asian literary and cultural texts as examples, Sayed:
- explores the role of art and storytelling in advancing social justice and serving as counter-narratives to colonial and Eurocentric discourses
- looks at the ways in which we can critically interpret creative expressions as sites of socio-political change, activism, empowerment and community-building
- questions and explores how post-secondary institutions might not only establish but enact historically marginalized knowledge and creativity to envision transformative pathways to support, uphold and expand community knowledge and build solidarity

One of those remarkable people is Délani Valin, a student in our Master of Arts in Professional Communication program. Délani is an award-winning poet whose book, Shapeshifters, was recently shortlisted for both the Indigenous Voices Award for poetry in English and the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award for the best first book of poetry in Canada in 2023.
She talks about how the theme of shapeshifting is woven throughout her book and even how corporate mascots like Barbie and Mr. Clean fit into that. She also treats us to a reading of her work and recommends a few must-read Indigenous poets.
