Pride Keynote with Dr. Robert Mizzi: 2SLGBTQQ+ Inclusion and the Campus Map Royal Roads University 2023-06-27 | Dr. Robert Mizzi, Canada Research Chair in Queer, Community and Diversity Education and associate professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba, joined the RRU community for Pride to speak about his research in improving EDI on university campuses. Post-secondary institutions everywhere are asking how they can improve equity, diversity and inclusion on campus — with tons of good ideas and mixed success — but the most important leadership in this area is coming from students. In his ground-breaking research, Mizzi asked participants to share their experiences with different spaces around their campuses in Manitoba and how they would redesign them to be safe, inclusive and affirming for 2SLGBTQQ+ people. Participants were even given the chance to mark down changes on their campus map. Kicking off National Indigenous Peoples Month with an award-winning student-poet Royal Roads University 2023-06-01 | This June, Royal Roads University joins nationwide celebrations to honour the remarkable past, present and future of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.One of those remarkable people is Délani Valin, a student in our Master of Arts in Professional Communication program. Délani is an award-winning poet whose book, Shapeshifters, was recently shortlisted for both the Indigenous Voices Award for poetry in English and the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award for the best first book of poetry in Canada in 2023.She talks about how the theme of shapeshifting is woven throughout her book and even how corporate mascots like Barbie and Mr. Clean fit into that.
