YKYrococ / Speed-E Boy - Mario Forever, Jaguar XJ220 [Remake/Arranged] jattello 2023-10-02 | ~~~~~~~ Open me ~~~~~~~"Apoplexy Tanks" and "YKYrococ" are my favorite songs from Mario Forever that were not made by Nintendo. Time ago I arranged "Apoplexy Tanks", so "YKYrococ" was the next one.It was a bit hard because this is a wacky song (weird instruments & crazy pitch bends). Not to mention that, as this song is a module (a compressed song in a very old music format), I had similar struggles I had with "Apoplexy Tanks", especially trying to figure out what notes are being played on the chord samples, and understanding a sample that was used for the scratches (1:11) and the swoosh sounds that start on 2:07. Fortunately, this module has no drum loop samples, so it was easy to arrange the drums.The module has 2 snare samples. The first one is just the snare and the second one is a sound of a snare and a kick combined.I interpreted the first one (just a snare sample) as the main snare in the arrangement. I interpreted the 2nd one (snare + kick) as a secondary snare that changes depending on the part of the song. As I am writing this I just noticed that I didn't respect the snare + kick sample, as I interpreted it as a snare and I scrapped the kick part. However, I believe the concept of the "secondary snare" is good and that the song sounds well despite this.I believe the looping part of the song should start sooner. It starts at 0:57, but it should start at 0:11. It's too relaxing and mystic.I listened to it too much that I like it less than before, but that's what happens when you listen to a song too much. I have to say that to arrange NES game is too hard, because the software that converts NES music (music in NSF format) to MIDI files, can't do accurate conversions.I had to split each original song in 5 WAV files (Square 1, Square 2, Triangle, Noise, Samples) and use them to modify each channel of the corresponding MIDI file. The edition in the MIDI file includes to split notes, to shorten notes duration, to identify when in the square channels are 2 instruments or more and split them (in NES music there is not "instrument" concept, all are just audio waves), to classify each drum note (because the NSF to MIDI converter can't distinguish drums and all the drum notes in the MIDI are the same), etc.I wanted to arrange Bomberman II, because it is one of the NES games that has a full drum kit: kick, snare and hi-hat. Other NES games don't have these three elements, so arranged music of them would sound lifeless, strange and boring (remember, I just arrange, I don't remix).I wasn't planning to arrange Bomberman (the first game) because it's music has no drums and it's too simple and short; but I was arranging Bomberman II and I thought I could take advantage of the situation and include the music of the first game to make a video with arrangements of both games. It's a 2x1!I like the evolution of the music between the first and the second game, especially when a song from the second game is based on a song from the first game. I knew it because a friend of mine had it on his computer. My favorite tracks are YKYrococ, Sirens & this one. For many years, the source of its custom music was a mystery for me.A few years ago I knew about modules, music files that are a kind of mix between a MIDI & sets of instruments samples. I was impressed by how tiny some of them are. I started listening to them using WinSCP, Winamp & 'ftp.modland.com'. Thanks to that, later I understood that Softendo/Buziol took some of them for his game, as well as that some of my childhood games (Typer Shark Deluxe, Zuma Deluxe & Insaniquarium Deluxe) used modules as well.Recently I found a way to convert a module to a MIDI & I felt inspired to try to arrange this track."Apoplexy" is a module in "MOD" format, from the Amiga computer. This format only lets you play 4 instruments at the same time (check this out to see it by yourself youtube.com/watch?v=H6VrwtGXWhE). One of the techniques that the composer applied was to use some "special samples" that are recordings of an instrument playing two notes at the same time (chord).Some steps of the arrangement process were:● Transpose the MIDI notes of each instrument, to sound like the MOD. The MOD has the wrong note info, so the original notes sound OK if you play them using the MOD samples, but sound awful if you play them using standard MIDI instruments.● Spot the instruments that use "special samples", listen to them and figure out how their chords are composed.● Write the MIDI notes of the drums, because the MOD uses drum loop samples (except for the crash cymbal and the clap). For doing these tasks, my hearing was essential (I'm not a musician).However, the organ of the last section may sound a little off. There are 4 organ samples in the MOD; the 1st one is just a short regular sample, but the other 3 are different "special samples" (chords). I tried several combinations of chords and the one that you hear in the video most resembles the original. 😕Did you know that if you convert this module to "MO3" format (un4seen.com/mo3.html), it only takes 34.4 kilobytes? That's very little!To arrange a module was really a challenge, I hope you like the result. That instrument is too in the music #5, but i replaced with a bass (i believe this is the correct option). :3*In music #6, there is an arpeggiator that i could not decrypt. So i had to put the original arp (with the original quality) in the arrangement.*In music #18, there was a japanesse percussion instrument. I investigated but i could not find what is that. So i used a "tom" that seems a little to the original.*I could not find a good cell phone instrument, so i used another retro instrument. I´m talking about the music in the start, the Steel Samurai Ringtone. You can find it in the download link as an "Extra".*When i worked i saw that a some instruments in the music has this structructure: the original instrument in a channel, and another instrument with lower volume in other channel that plays the same notes but it´s more high-pitched or more low-pitched. I respected it some times, and in others i ignored the 2nd instrument because i believed it was the best.*Thanks to Stacy Anne Christiansen from vgmusic.com because i used her midi to decrypt an arpeggiator in the Jake Marshall music.*Updated music #12, edited bad delay in flautes.
