Whether you're deep into energy systems or just trying to make your home more efficient, you’ve probably heard about the potential for saving money with smarter electricity use. But how much control are you willing to give up to do that? In this video, we’re going to dig into demand response—an approach that allows consumers to adjust their electricity usage to help balance the grid, cut costs, and reduce emissions.
We’ll explore both the benefits and the risks—how much flexibility you really need to make a difference, and whether exposing yourself to volatile electricity markets is worth it. I’ll also share some personal experiences and practical examples, including the role of technology in making this all a bit easier.

There’s a Paradox in the way that people talk about battery minerals. On the one hand, we’re convinced there’s not going to be enough critical minerals so there will be shortages and prices will rise sky high. And on the other hand, they also think we won’t be bothered to recycle.
People always say that we are a “throw it in the rubbish” kind of society but that is such… rubbish. I’ve never seen someone just drive their old car into landfill and walk away, have you? When people think of batteries getting thrown away willy nilly, they’re thinking of small stuff like phones and walkmans. So that’s certainly wasteful, and we shouldn’t do that either, but even if we throw all of that away the amount of battery waste from small products like that is very small compared to the total amount of car and stationary energy batteries that we’re going to have to deal with from say 2030 onwards.
I personally don’t think we need to be so pessimistic about this. In this video I’m going to run through the technologies we have available to recycle batteries, and the main obstacles to scaling this industry up even faster.

We are going to head inside the R&D facility for Calix and their spinoff Leilac (Low Emissions Lime And Cement). They have reimagined the humble kiln or furnace that has been powering these critical processes for hundreds and in some cases thousands of years, to get rid of those hard to abate process emissions. And they’ve invited us here today to take a look and tell us how it works.

We'll address common complaints about modelling from reports like AEMO's Integrated System Plan (ISP) and CSIRO's Gencost report. Using John's powerful Keynumbers tool, we'll calculate how the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) for nuclear power changes with varying assumptions, including project life, cost of finance, and capacity factor.
Don't miss this insightful discussion as we uncover the true costs and potential of nuclear power for Australia's energy future. Tune in to see if the published costs are fair or if we need a new perspective!

Transforming the land under power lines into thriving ecosystems: planetwild.com/engineeringwithrosie/15
Can we use the afternoon sun in Perth to power the evening in Sydney? Imagine harnessing sunlight from thousands of kilometers away to power our cities at peak times. In today's video, we explore the groundbreaking energy technology that can do just that. Ultra High Voltage Direct Current, or UHVDC is reshaping how power is transmitted over vast distances. As countries globally seek efficient renewable energy solutions, China leads the charge in this technology, successfully employing UHVDC to link its hydro, solar and wind-rich western regions with densely populated eastern cities.
This success prompts a critical question: Why haven’t countries like the USA or Australia, with seemingly similar geographies, adopted UHVDC? Consider the potential—what if UHVDC could link Western Australia's abundant solar resources to the main Australian grid? This could allow Sydney at 5 PM to use solar power generated at 3 PM in Perth. Or in the USA it could be California’s 2PM sunshine powering New York’s 5PM, or transporting wind from the lightly populated mid west to the cities. The implications of such a capability are profound and could revolutionize energy use across time zones.
Why is UHVDC not more widespread? To answer this questions, we're going to examine how elevating from traditional HVDC to UHVDC allows longer distance and more efficient energy transmission. We'll also look into how much UHVDC has been installed in China, compare it with installations elsewhere, and discuss what future plans may hold. We'll dive into the technological specifics, understand its advantages, and confront the formidable challenges that have curtailed its broader adoption. Stay tuned as we explore why this transformative technology, while a game-changer in China, is still on the sidelines elsewhere.

The first obstacle that these nuclear plans face is that nuclear power is currently banned in Australia. Back in 1998, the Howard government wanted to secure a nuclear research reactor at Lucas Heights near Sydney. To do so, they needed support from the Greens party, who made a deal to support the research reactor if a nationwide ban on nuclear power plants was introduced at the same time. So it was banned and remains so today.
But what if this ban were lifted? Should we then embrace nuclear for our energy future? The answer, quite simply, is no. It's a dumb idea for Australia. And I'm not just throwing around words here; there are solid reasons behind this bold claim. Four, to be precise: it's too slow, it doesn't play nicely with wind and solar, it's too expensive and it solves problems that we don't have in Australia.
Do I think nuclear power should be banned here? No, I think it should be allowed a level playing field with other energy technologies, to allow a fair fight. Like most people, I want the cheapest clean electricity possible. And for any one of the reasons I’ve mentioned, nuclear would lose this fair fight. Add them all up and there is absolutely zero chance we’ll ever have nuclear power in Australia.
I’m not a nuclear hater, I think nuclear makes a lot of sense in countries that have the kinds of problems I mentioned in the last part of this video. I’m working on a longer nuclear video with a more global perspective currently, so please feel free to leave your angry comments about how I was unfair to nuclear in this video in the comments so I can make sure that one is nicely rounded.

In this "Reality Check," we'll explore the practicalities, myths, and hard truths surrounding:
-Direct Air Capture: Can we really scrub carbon from the atmosphere at scale?
-Waste to Energy: Is transforming trash into power the answer to our waste problem?
-Industrial Heat: How viable are renewable sources in high-temperature industrial applications?
-Hydrogen: Hyped as the fuel of the future, but does it live up to the promise?
-Petrochemicals: Can we ever make them green, or should we be looking for alternatives?
Paul Martin's unique blend of scientific rigor and engineering expertise cuts through the hype, offering clear insights into which technologies have the potential to shape our sustainable future and which ones might not be ready for prime time. Whether you're a renewable energy enthusiast, a skeptic, or somewhere in between, this livestream will equip you with the knowledge to engage in informed discussions about the future of energy.
Don't miss out on this opportunity to get a reality check on renewable energy technologies. Tune in, ask your burning questions, and find out which 'green' techs make the cut and why some just don't measure up according to Paul Martin.

In this video we’re going to get serious about mining for the energy transition. We're going to find out where emissions in mining come from, what solutions are available, and check in on progress from the industry towards that goal.
The general vibe is that we can make mining less harmful to the environment, it can be zero emissions, companies are already making moves in that direction and we’re going to find out about the technologies they’re using to achieve that. But the serious part is: mining doesn’t come without a local environmental cost. It can’t. This is one of those tricky tradeoff situations, where we have to do something a little bit bad, to prevent something very bad from happening.

Have you seen claims that EVs need so much mining they’re worse than petrol cars? Let’s dig beneath the surface to see the true story.
It is true that an EV needs six times the minerals in a petrol car, but that's just part of the equation. The main reason we're switching from internal combustion to electric vehicles isn't because of what they’re made of, but because of what they avoid: fossil fuels.
Take a typical petrol car. Over its lifetime, it burns around 17,000 liters of petrol. In contrast, an EV's battery metals weigh about 160 kg, a hundred times less. And the vast majority of battery materials are recyclable.
Even without recycling, EVs drastically reduce the need for mined materials. We're talking a 99% reduction compared to petrol cars! And of course we know from myth 3 that EV batteries will be recycled so it’s more like a 99.9% reduction when you factor that in.
There are extra greenhouse gas emissions for an EV relative to a petrol car that arise from mining and battery manufacture. So if you plan to buy a brand new car and never drive it, a petrol car *would* be the more climate friendly option. But if you are planning to drive that car, the difference is made up in about 20 thousand km based on our current electricity grid’s emissions, so after 1 or 2 years of average driving that’s less mining and less greenhouse gases for an EV compared to a petrol car.
The shift to EVs isn't about choosing lesser evils. It's about making a transformative leap towards sustainability.
