JAI HIND!•••✈ Westland Sea King -The Indian Navy Sea Kings were built by AgustaWestland in the UK, under the license of the American aircraft manufacturer Sikorsky. The Indian Navy has been operating multiple variants of the Sea King since the 1970s; Mk42, Mk42A, MK42B, and MK42C. The Sea King MK42B was primarily designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) role and equipped with dipping sonar, advanced avionics, and with two Sea Eagle anti-ship missiles. The sea king can also be armed with four “Whitehead A244S” torpedoes or four “Mk11” depth charges. The helicopter is powered by 2x Rolls-Royce Gnome H1400–2 turbo-shaft engines. The Sea Kings are also called “The Flying Frigates” as these helicopters are capable of performing almost all the missions that a frigate warship performs. The Sea king Mk.42B variant features the MEL Super Searcher Radar, located in a drum radome on the spine of the helicopter. The Sea King Mk.42C variant has a nose-mounted Bendix RDR 1400C radar, which replaces the MEL Super Searcher. For ASW operations, the Sea King is equipped with Alcatel HS-12 dipping sonar and Sonobuoy (disposable one-time-use sonar) dispensers. The Alcatel HS-12 is dropped into the water with a holding cable and a wire for data transfer. It can operate to a depth of 220 meters. The HS-12 sonar searches for submarines either through passive listening (of propeller noise) or active acoustic pinging. Once the submarine is tracked and identified, the helicopter crew can launch homing torpedoes or drop depth charges. After operating for the Indian Navy for almost five decades, the sea kings are nearing the end of their service life. On 25th Feb 2020, India signed a deal with the United States to purchase 24 Lockheed Martin / Sikorsky MH-60 Romeo helicopters to replace the Sea Kings.•••HAL ALH Mk.3 Dhruv - The Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH-DHRUV) is an indigenously designedand developed chopper by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL.) It is a twin-engine, multi-role, multi-mission new-generation helicopter in the 5.5-ton weight class. ALH Dhruvs are simulating Tactical Air Insertion where the Indian Navy’s Marine Commandos (MARCOS) prepare to enter hostile territory. The 2nd Dhruv (IN709) is providing close air support using its onboard machine gun to the Marcos lowering down on the Gemini boat. For decades, Sea King Mk.42C was the preferred mount for the Marcos. Now ALH Mk.3 Dhruv can also be used to perform commando missions. On 19th April 2021, the Indian Navy commissioned its newest aircraft squadron INAS 323 “Harriers.” The squadron is equipped with these state-of-the-art ALH Mk.III.•••HAL Chetak - The HAL Chetak is the ‘Alouette III’ developed by Sud Aviation (SA) in the 1960s. Later Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd obtained a license to build the chopper in India. Chetak is a two-ton class, seven-seater versatile, multi-role helicopter. Chetak can be used for Transport, Training, Casualty Evacuation, Search & Rescue (SAR), Aerial Survey, Patrolling, and off-shore operations. The first Chetak was delivered to the Indian Navy in the mid-1960s. The chopper has been a workhorse for the armed forces for almost six decades now. But on the plus side some rare airlines/aircraft have made visits to Mumbai this year.Vietnam Airlines is one of them. I’m a huge fan of Vietnam Airlines’ Airbus A350 (and their 789) and to see one at Mumbai was always my dream.On 29th November 2020, my dream came true as Vietnam Airlines sent one of their youngest Airbus A350s (VN-A898) to Mumbai. This was probably Vietnam Airlines’ first ever flight to Mumbai Airport.They operated a few times since then and their last flight operated on 24th December, 2020. All of them were cargo-only flights. Vietnam has 14 Airbus A350-900s in their fleet and all of them are powered by Rolls Royce Trent XWB Engines, which produce 84,200 lbf of thrust each.I was lucky to get her arrival as well as her departure, not once but twice. I got the departure of her first flight (VN-A898) and her last (VN-A887), that too from different angles. :)Vietnam may or may not operate to Mumbai again so this was a really special catch for me. Of the 123 aircraft that were in Jet’s possession, 12 remained with it while some are still stored, around 40 are in India with Spicejet, Vistara and Trujet. Others were returned to their lessors.A few weeks ago, Bank of Utah took one of Jet Airways' Boeing 777s, VT-JEK. This airframe flew for Jet Airways from Feb 2009 to March 2019 until the airline collapsed.JIHBTWO DAC, an Irish company took possession of the aircraft from 25th April 2019 to 24th June 2020, for non-payment of dues related to the lease of other aircraft in Jet’s fleet.This airframe was stored at Mumbai Airport since April 2019 until Bank of Utah took possession of her in late 2020.On 19th November 2020, the aircraft now registered as N351BU, departed from Mumbai Airport for the very last time for her flight to Tupelo Regional Airport, USA (via Portsmouth Airport, KPSM), where she will be completely disassembled and her parts will be put on sale.Such a sad end to a relatively young (12.8 years old) airframe. The Last Active Boeing 747-300 (B743) in The World! Vaibhav Shah 2020-06-20 | THE LAST ACTIVE BOEING 747-300 IN THE WORLD! Just to let you know how rare this aircraft is; it is the last produced, the youngest and the last commercially operated Boeing 747-300 in the world.This airframe, EW-465TQ, was built in 1990 as a Passenger jet and was first delivered to Sabena Airlines, a Belgian airline. After 10 years of passenger operations, she was to converted into a freighter.She then flew for Atlas Air, Polar Air Cargo, Air Atlanta Icelandic, AirBridgeCargo and Saudi Arabian Airlines before joining TransAviaExport Cargo Airline in 2016. She is currently 30 years old.As of July 2019, only 3 Boeing 743s were active; EW-465TQ (TransAviaExport), EP-MND (Mahan Air) and HZ-HM1A (Saudi Government.)As per available info, EP-MND last flew in Oct 2019 (withdrawn from use & is currently stored) and HZ-HM1A last flew on 5th Dec 2019 (probably stored as well), making EW-465TQ the last active Boeing 747-300 in the World.This was a very special catch for me. This is the first ever Boeing 747-300 that I’ve spotted and with this 747 in the bag, I’ve photographed all the base variants of Boeing 747 [741, 742, 743, 744, 747SP and 748] :)Covid19 has forced many airlines to ground their older airplanes. But for some reason or the other, I never got to click one. But on 6th December 2018, I finally got to tick Thai 747 off my wish-list.HS-TGB operated this flight. She was delivered to Thai Airways in June 2001 and is currently 19 years old. She is named “Si Satchanalai” (meaning: “City of good people”) and is one of the 8 Boeing 747s left in Thai Airways’ fleet.Due to the Coronavirus Covid19 Pandemic, the entire fleet of Boeing 747-400s is currently grounded by Thai Airways. Even though their future seems uncertain, I really hope they keep flying for few more years once the situation improves.Seen here taxiing for her flight back to Bangkok as “TG318”. This flight was operated by 11 years old airframe, PK-XRA.She is powered by 2 Rolls Royce Trent 772B Engines which cost $23.25M, weigh 6,160 kg and produce 72,000 lbf of thrust each.In a world dominated by plain/white liveries, Air Asia’s bright red livery looks fantastic, especially on their Airbus A330s. I enjoyed photographing this aircraft so much.Unfortunately, the airline stopped operations to Mumbai few months later, and the current status of their fleet shows stored as well. Jet Airways | Gone But Not Forgotten | Plane Spotting | Mega Compilation Vaibhav Shah 2020-04-20 | #JetAirways #PlaneSpotting #MumbaiAirport Just over a year ago, on 17th April 2019, Jet Airways ceased all flight operations with its last revenue flight operated by a Jet Konnect Boeing 737 from Amritsar to Mumbai International Airport.Jet Airways started commercial operations on 5th May, 1993 with 737s and built a fleet of ATRs, 737NGs, 77Ws, 330s and 737 MAX aircraft over the years. Mumbai and Delhi were its Major Hubs.Even though the competition in Indian aviation sector was tough, Jet Airways built a good market share and reputation. Jet expanded operations to multiple cities and countries as its fleet grew, acquired Air Sahara in 2007 and built code-share agreements with 22 airlines. The airline started to face challenges post 2008. Due to the growing competition, high fuel costs, outstanding dues and increasing losses, the financial situation of the airline got worse and eventually led to the collapse.There was hope back then that the shutdown was temporary, but that has slowly vanished. Repeated attempts to revive the airline, once India’s largest, have fallen flat.Of the 123 aircraft that were in Jet’s possession, 12 remain with it while 29 are still stored, 40 are in India with SpiceJet, Vistara and Trujet. Others were returned to their lessors.Before the airline was grounded, around 16,000 people were working for Jet Airways. IIRC, the last time Etihad Airways Airbus A380 visited Mumbai Airport was in October 2017.But on 16th Feb 2020, Etihad Airways Airbus A380 operating flight “EY455” from Sydney, Australia to Abu Dhabi, UAE diverted to Mumbai Airport around 5am local time because of some technical issue.Special thanks to my friends Akshay, Aneesh, Gaushal and Rohit. She was first delivered to Qatar Airways in Dec 2004 before joining Air Italy's fleet on 31st Oct, 2018. She became the first ever Code F aircraft to depart from Mumbai Airport’s Runway 32.Singapore Airlines had ordered 24 Airbus A380s. 19 A380s are currently active in its fleet and 5 older airframes are already retired by the airline.SQ A380s are powered by 4x RR Trent 900 Engines which cost US$25m, weigh 6,246 kg and produce up to 84,000 lbf of thrust each.Since Etihad Airways stopped operating their A380s to Mumbai Airport, its has become extremely rare to spot an A380 in daylight in Mumbai. And spotting them is really hard as they aren’t always scheduled flights. On this day (7th June, 2019), we were very lucky to spot one on a clear sunny morning in Mumbai.This airframe first flew on 5th March, 2004 and was originally delivered to Air France as F-GITJ on 31st March, 2004. She operated Air France’s last commercial Boeing 747 flight on 11th Jan 2016.She was stored at Tarbes Lourdes Airport for a few months before Air Atlanta Icelandic picked her up and leased her to Saudi Arabian Airlines on 29th July, 2016 as TF-AAL.This airframe is currently over 15 years old. She is powered by 4x GE CF6-80C2 Engines. Each engine has a Static thrust of 59,000 lbs. The Indian Navy fleet sailed from Gujarat's Okha Port towards Pakistani waters to attack the Karachi port.The fleet reached 70 miles south of Karachi at night and after missiles were fired Pakistani vessel -- PNS Khaibar-- sunk.On this day, Many Indian Navy personnel who were part of the successful operation were honoured with gallantry awards. There is a Navy Day function at Mumbai’s Gateway of India, every year. The event is attended by Navy personnel, their families and the general public. It was developed from Airbus’ first Airliner, the Airbus A300.The Airbus A310 first flew on 3rd April, 1982 and entered revenue service in April, 1983 with launch customer SwissAir. It was in production from 1983 till 1998 and a total of 255 Airbus A310s were built.As of October 2019, around 30-35 Airbus A310s are still active. (6 Air Transat, 8 Mahan Air, 3 FedEx, 2 Iran Air, 1 Taban Airlines, 3 ULS Cargo, Yemenia 1 and a few with Governments and Air Forces)With the arrival of new fuel-efficient airplanes, most airlines have already retired or are in the process of retiring these Classic Airbus A310s. It is rare to spot an A310 these days, but even rarer to spot its passenger version.On this day (19th July, 2019), I was very lucky as Mahan Air’s A310 came to Mumbai Airport out of the blue. She was operating on behalf of Iran Air and this was her first ever visit to Mumbai Airport.I’m a big fan of these A310s and I hope to photograph them many times before they’re gone forever. First Ever Landing of a Boeing 747-8 on Mumbai Airports Runway 14 Vaibhav Shah 2019-09-23 | #MumbaiAirport #Planespotting #Boeing747Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) Mumbai has two intersecting runways. Primary runway 09/27 and secondary runway 14/32.Runway 09/27 is 3,660m long and is used 90% of the times. Runway 14/32 is 2,990m long and is used only when the main runway is unavailable due to maintenance or other reasons.Both runways were made Code F compliant after reconstruction which was completed in 2011 (which means they can accommodate larger aircraft like the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 747-8).But only Runway 09/27 had taxiways wide enough as per Code F aircraft’s requirement. It was delivered to Air Tanzania in January, 2019 and is just 7 months old.It is powered by 2× Pratt & Whitney PW1524G Engines which weigh 2177 kg and produce ~24,400 lbf of thrust each. It has maximum range of 3,350 nmi (6,200 km) and has 12 Business class and 120 Economy class seats.As of now, only 5 airlines operate Airbus A220: Swiss Air, AirBaltic, Delta Airlines, Korean Air and Air Tanzania. This was probably a one-off flight and it may not operate on this route again. Air Tanzania had planned to operate their B787-8 to Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai from October 2018, but they deployed it on domestic / short haul routes instead.Finally, on 18th July, 2019 Air Tanzania flew their first flight to Mumbai from Dar es Salaam Airport.The airline has only 1 Boeing 787 in its fleet. It is registered as 5H-TCG and was delivered to them in July 2018. It is named after the Highest Mountain in Africa, “Kilimanjaro”. And the tail of the aircraft features the National Animal of Tanzania, the Giraffe.The aircraft is powered by 2x Rolls Royce RR Trent 1000 Engines and is configured with 22 Business Class and 240 Economy Class Seats.
