Ambassador Eric G. Nelson is the Associate Director of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, since February 2022. As U.S. Ambassador-in-Residence, he provides a whole-of-government perspective to the Marshall Center’s mission to Educate, Engage and Empower security partners and leaders to collectively affect regional, transnational, and global challenges. Ambassador Nelson has spent over 30 years in diplomatic service, including as the U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina (2019-2022). A member of the United States Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor, he previously served as Deputy Executive Secretary and Executive Director of the Department of State's Executive Secretariat, Director of the Office of eDiplomacy, Deputy Chief of Mission in Costa Rica, Consul General in Munich, and in overseas assignments in Islamabad, Milan, Mexico City, Frankfurt and Santo Domingo. Eric began his career in public service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia.
