Christmas with Atlanta Master Chorale Preview Video

Atlanta Master Chorale 2023-12-01 | Our audiences love our annual Christmas concert—so much so that we have three performances! The Christmas song “Silver Bells” includes a line that hints at what I love about our Christmas concert. The verse begins by describing busy city life, and then comes this phrase: “But above all this bustle, you hear…” In the midst of life’s chaos, especially during the Christmas season, in the middle of all our personal “bustle,” we listen for something that rises above the ordinary. Something that calls us away from the chaos.

We will gather in the concert hall to experience songs of expectation and hope, of delight and joy, of faith and love. We’re already looking forward to it.

The Skys the Limit Preview Video

Atlanta Master Chorale 2023-10-02 | Join us October 13 & 14 at 8 pm for our season premiere concert at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts or via livestream!

Our October concert theme is “The Sky’s the Limit”, and the program features music reveling in the offerings of the morning and evening skies: wind, clouds, rainbows, sun, moon, stars, and endless possibilities.

It’s a cliché, “the sky’s the limit.” There are no barriers to our dreams and opportunities. There is something about looking up at the sky that releases the wonder of our inner child. We ask, “Why is the sky blue?” “Where does the wind come from?” “Is there life on other planets?” “Where do I fit into the cosmos?” We all remember looking at fluffy clouds in a deep blue sky and discovering that the cloud-shapes looked like animals (Look, a dog! Wait, now it’s a roaring lion!).

Beyond that, there is something inherently optimistic about sky-gazing. When life takes a turn for the better, we happily declare that “things are looking up!”

High Lonesome Bluegrass Mass Preview Video

Atlanta Master Chorale 2023-04-13 | You don't want to miss Atlanta Master Chorale's performance of “Come Away to the Skies: A High, Lonesome Mass” featuring Georgia’s own Grammy-nominated Chuck Nation Band on fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, and bass. Chuck is a member of the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame, a two-time Georgia State Fiddle Champion, Georgia State Mandolin Champion, and a Louisiana State Fiddle Champion.

The program also includes Atlanta Master Chorale singing folk songs and hymns arising from the American bluegrass tradition plus three special selections from The Chuck Nation Band: “If You’re Ever in Oklahoma”, “Bucket to the South”, and “Orange Blossom Special”.

The “Bluegrass Mass” has been performed throughout America, including at Carnegie Hall and the Ryman Auditorium. Audiences familiar with the Ordinary of the Mass will hear traditional elements from Introit to Benedictus incorporating recognizable Southern hymns, such as "Do Lord Remember Me" and "Brightest and Best".

It is going to be a great close to our season!

Concert Description:
The Magnificat is an ancient liturgical text that is both a hymn of praise and a prayer for justice. It has fascinated composers for centuries, and there are hundreds of great choral settings of the text. One of the most famous is written by none other than J. S. Bach, and it calls for the full orchestra of his day: strings, flutes, oboes, bassoons, trumpets, and timpani, along with choir and soloists. It’s pretty much the whole baroque “kitchen sink.”

For our March concerts, we will present not only Bach’s Magnificat, but also a varied selection of other Magnificat settings from the Renaissance to the present day.

Spirited Conversations with Dale Trumbore

Atlanta Master Chorale 2022-10-06 | Listen in as Atlanta Master Chorale Artistic Director Eric Nelson and composer and writer Dale Trumbore discuss the compositional process for Dale's piece "In the Middle". Utilizing Barbara Crooker’s poem by the same name, “In the Middle” describes the struggle to connect in the rush of ordinary life and reminds us that time will ultimately catch up with all of us. You’ll get a sneak peek into the intricacies of the piece as Dale and Eric discuss her use of motives and text painting. During the conversation, you'll also hear about Dale’s love for both music and the written word and how poetry shapes her compositions. This is an interview you don't want to miss!

Dale Trumbore is a Los Angeles-based composer and writer whose music has been praised by The New York Times for its “soaring melodies and beguiling harmonies deployed with finesse.” Her compositions have been performed in the U.S. and internationally by the Chicago Symphony’s MusicNOW ensemble, Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Modesto Symphony, Pasadena Symphony, Phoenix Chorale, Tonality, and VocalEssence. Her choral works have been commissioned for premieres at national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, American Guild of Organists, Chorus America, and National Collegiate Choral Organization. Dale is passionate about setting to music poems, prose, and found text by living writers. She has written extensively about working through creative blocks and establishing a career in music in essays and in her first book, Staying Composed: Overcoming Anxiety and Self-Doubt Within a Creative Life.
