The Old Synagogue in Dubrovnik, Croatia is the world's oldest Sephardic Synagogue still in use today and it's the second oldest synagogue in Europe. It was first established in 1352 and gained legal status in 1408. Sephardic Jews are Spanish Jews who were expelled from Spain and surrounding areas after 1492. Today, the main floor is still a place of worship for the High Holy Days and special occasions, but the synagogue is mainly a museum, which features many Jewish centuries-old artifacts. Jews faced persecution in the Dubrovnik Ghetto over the centuries and today, there are so few Jews left in Dubrovnik, this synagogue doesn't even have it's own rabbi. Like the rest of Old Town Dubrovnik, the synagogue has suffered damage over the centuries, from the Great Earthquake of 1667, World War II, and the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990's, If fact, in 1992, an artillery shell went through the roof of the synagogue, causing many objects to be transferred to a safer place.
