This natural edge winged bowl was turned from Yew, a stunning timber prized for its rich colour, dramatic grain, and flowing movement. The blank was mounted on a Record Power Coronet Herald wood lathe, allowing the natural contours of the wood to dictate the final form while preserving the live edges to create the winged effect.
Easy Wood Tools carbide woodturning tools were used throughout the turning process, providing control and clean cuts—especially important when working with an irregular, interrupted cut typical of natural edge pieces. Careful shaping revealed the unique character of the Yew while maintaining balance and symmetry.
To finish the bowl, Yorkshire Grit abrasive paste was applied to smooth the surface and enhance the depth and contrast of the grain. A finishing wax was then added, giving the piece a soft sheen and protective layer while bringing out the warm, rich tones of the Yew.
The final result is a striking natural edge winged bowl that celebrates the organic beauty of Yew wood and the dynamic nature of woodturning.
