This large sycamore bowl was turned with the natural edge left intact to celebrate the organic shape and flowing grain of the wood. I turned the piece on my Record Power Coronet Herald wood lathe, carefully working with the uneven edge to keep the bowl balanced while preserving its raw, natural character.
After shaping and refining the form, the bowl was finished with several coats of lemon oil. This enhances the pale tones of the sycamore, brings the grain to life, and leaves a soft, smooth finish that feels great in the hand.
A satisfying project that highlights the beauty of sycamore and the contrast between a clean, flowing interior and a wild, natural rim—simple, elegant, and full of character.
