That Pedal ShowVintage and Custom Shop Strats against old Blue – aren’t they all just the same?
Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show. In this episode Dan and I are embarking on the latest leg of a long and, at times, torturous journey. Back at the end of 2018 I began the search for a new Strat to take over #1 duties from my old faithful, Blue: a 2001 American Vintage model. Very long story short, I’d been lucky enough to play a bunch of old ones and the unfortunate truth is that dear old Blue simply doesn’t cut it in terms of tone or feel next to the better of the old Strats. The videos in between now and then tell the whole story, but fast forward to Summer 2022 and I now am lucky enough to own three more guitars that hopefully bring the story to some temporary closure. This video documents where we are now. Please enjoy!

Welcome to the show! A few weeks back we made a video comparing two classic ‘small-box’ Marshalls, the JTM45 and 1987x. Following that video we had a bunch of common questions and themes crop up in the comments… that we’re addressing in this video. You can enjoy…

Q: You uploaded this video once already – what gives? A: Yes, this is a re-upload. We had an issue with a caption which was causing some confusion. So we deleted the captions - everything else is exactly the same as it was. We had some extraneous noise, some of which made it to the recorded audio, some of which didn't. C'est la vie!

Welcome to the show! Boost is an absolutely fundamental aspect of electric guitar tone. Whether you want to get louder or quieter; more distorted or less; whether you want to change EQ: you need to understand the concept of boost. Now the usual approach is to add MORE. But as Dan demonstrates today, there are two other key ways to think about boost: it's unboost, basically. We explore that concept via volume level and EQ before getting to the fun bit: two amps! Enjoy the show!

Welcome to the show! A very simple proposition today - take two classic Marshalls, give ‘em a hammering and see what’s what.
Both amps are modern reissues: a 2245 JTM45 and a 1987x ‘Plexi’. They are both non-master volume amps that you will hear through the same cabinet. No attenuators, no direct sounds, no cab modelling, no post EQ or plugins – just the amps, speakers and microphones.
Big thanks to our mate Jake Loosemore for selling us the JTM45!
Questions arising…
How are you switching the amps? With a Radial Headbone VT, remote switched via TheGigRig G3 - links below
What is the speaker cabinet? A Marshall 1960AX 412 with Celestion G12M Greenback speakers
Why two mics? There’s an Austrian Audio OC18 and an AKG D190e. I recorded them both and mixed them to taste. (Mick here, hello). There’s also a goodly dose of stereo room mics in the mix - 2 x AKG C414XL.
Why no FX loop discussion for the 1987x? You can’t use the FX loop when using the Headbone VT
What is that blue guitar at the end? A lovely chap called Dean Cutler came to a TPS Experience Day recently and brought a couple of his builds. We asked if he would leave one with us. His business is Cutler Custom Guitars, although there’s no formal website yet.

Want one? We unpack a massive space with a Frankenstein build
Welcome to the show! In some circles, huge modulated and pitch-shifted reverbs are the norm. But for the rest of us, reverb has typically been that knob on your amp that you rotate until you can just about hear it. It’s time to reconsider: what exactly is going on in all that expansive ambience? Thusly, we tiptoe through the aural flora of three such space generators before embarking on a Heath-Robinson-meets-Frankenstein approach to recreating it using five delays, EQ, pitch shifting, chorus and, well, some other stuff.
A quick note to say everything today is dual mono: no stereo and no wet-dry. Both amps are running all the time and receiving both wet and dry signals from the mixer when the relevant controls are turned up.

Welcome to the show! For those of us who are old enough to remember… We know what it was like to plug in that distortion pedal for the first time and feel like every problem you could ever have dreamed of having… had simply vanished. Lost in a vicarious haze of stadium-conquering, spandex-clad, fist-pumping, pheromone producing, guitar-face-gurning bliss, that diminutive disher of dirt put the shreddie in your Eddie and why in your Vai. [New PRS Pedals, SE Silver Sky, HDRX 20 & more]That Pedal Show2022-10-21 | A true guitar leg-end of our time is here to shoot the sizzle at Schwangri-La!
Welcome to the show! It’s not every day we get to welcome a guest of such Genuine Guitar Royalty stature as Mr Paul Reed Smith! But here he is, live and in person at That Pedal Show to talk about new pedals, old chestnuts and just about everything in between. For those of you yet to hear, PRS has recently released a batch of guitar pedals. That’s interesting for a couple of reasons: first, that Paul is a stalwart guitar-into-amp devotee; and second because they’re genuinely interesting, credible and high quality takes on some classic effects. Just-another-range-of-pile-em-high-sell-em-cheap-me-too pedals they most certainly are not. There’s also a super fun new 20-watt tube amp too. Without further ado, enjoy the show!

Welcome to the show. Our great chums The Brothers Landreth visited the TPS studio during their 2022 European tour. In this video we take a deep dive into Joey’s current rig – including his utterly bonkers pedalboard – and also get some bass playing and tone insight from Dave. This is the full-length version of the short video that we put out a few weeks back… just in case you feel like you've seen some of it before!
There are three live session tracks referenced in this video, which we’ve cut out and put in a separate video… plus a bonus track too! SEPARATE BAND SESSION VIDEO IS HERE youtu.be/gRJQIYMHbUU
Needless to say, MASSIVE thanks to Joey, Dave, Roman and also manager Stu and sound tech Ian for making this such a fantastic couple of days. We are honoured to have such incredible humans here at TPS.

Hello friends! Our wonderful friends The Brothers Landreth visited the studio during their 2022 European tour. We did a long show with them for a separate video including a deep dive into Joey's current pedalboard and tones, but the guys were also kind enough to also do a live session for us. This video contains the four tracks they played. No talking, nothing else, just music - imagine that on a guitar gear channel!
Yes, Joey's guitar is a little out of tune in the first track. We talked about it and decided that it is what it is. Live! Also, the intermittent signal issues on Joey's guitar are caused by a dying battery in a reverb pedal. It took us a minute to diagnose… but it's kinda cool, right?!

Welcome to the show – Dan here, hello! In 2015 I found my dream guitar: a 1965 Fender Telecaster. Four years later, I was lucky enough to own it. This video documents my journey with this astonishing guitar, as we talk through various topics including 'player-grade' vintage instruments and how – if you're thinking about spending serious amounts of cash on a guitar – a distinctly 'non-perfect' instrument is definitely worth considering. Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! The most common question we get asked is this: “What’s the best order for my gain pedals?” For example you may have a chain of overdrives, boosts, distortions, EQs and fuzzes and you’re constantly scratching your head about the ‘best’ signal order in which to place them. We’ve made shows about it, we explain it almost every week in VCQ and we even struggle with it ourselves from time to time. If you really do want to understand, it’s time to stop asking the wrong question. It’s no good asking what order they should go in; what you need to ask is “What do I want to achieve with these pedals?” So let’s start there and get this thing nailed on. Enjoy the show!

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! We are massive fans of delay and echo tones here at TPS. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where either Dan or I would use a board without a delay pedal on it… And then comes the problem: when there are so many great sounds available which //one// do you choose? For sure a multi-function do-it-all delay is a great solution and many of them have dual delay functionality to boot. But there’s also something incredibly satisfying – and in many cases more easily accessible and achievable – when you go for two separate delay pedals. Or more… With that in mind this show expands on some ideas of how to use two delay pedals for maximum inspiration and effect.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show – Mick here, hello! I wanted to document the fascinating process of a professional guitar neck refret on my 1961 Fender Stratocaster. Two warnings: First, there are no pedals nor any guitar playing in this video at all; second, it is a very long video containing graphic real-life depictions of guitar repair! Please excuse the diversion from our usual content.
This lovely old Strat (body refin) has lived with me for most of the last three years but just recently I was able to actually buy it, meaning I can get it to exactly where I want it in terms of playability. To whit, the nut had worn down to basically unplayable and the frets – replaced at least once before – were in need of some TLC after some years of playing. Armed with a couple of cameras I set off to Monty’s Guitars in Cheltenham, UK to see our good friend Matt Gleeson. Matt has two decades of experience in professional guitar repair and setup under his belt and, to my great surprise, he was totally happy to let me film the whole thing as it happened. This video is what happened next - you might want to tackle it in a few sittings!
Massive thanks to Matt, George and the whole team at Monty’s for making us so welcome. Check out Monty’s stuff here: montysguitars.com
I just want to add a personal thanks for – and acknowledgement of – Matt and team’s dedication to the art, craft, ethos, working practices and environment that surrounds everything their company does. It is truly inspiring.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! You can great great tones loud. And you can great tones quiet. But we’re not here to argue any of that. We’re here to expand the discussion around feel and connection to your sound that may motivate or indeed repress your playing. Thusly, we play four similar tones at high volume and at low volume and discuss the results. What do you enjoy most and what’s most appropriate for your situation? And, inevitably, where is the compromise?
Enjoy the show!
Questions arising – Mick here, hello. I feel compelled to write this. This video is potentially very confusing and little bit frustrating to watch. The temptation is to focus on the tone of the two amps, and of course while the Bugera sounds really blimmin’ good, it’s hardly surprising that a top-flight boutique amp like the Two-Rock is going to light us up a bit more. Or indeed you may much prefer the Bugera, which is equally valid. However… This video is not about the subjectivity of tone. It’s about comparing the feel and response of volume and what might be most appropriate for recording. And that’s the frustrating part, because there is literally no way of conveying that fully in a YouTube video. In any YouTube video. That last sentence is massively important and we’d be doing you a disservice to not spell it out. We can discuss the reactions and try to explain the concepts but with this gear and any other gear, you HAVE to be in the room to really understand whether it’s going to work for you or not. And that’s not some kind of cop-out for this video’s shortcomings. It’s plea to anyone who thinks a YouTube demo tells you what something sounds and – more importantly – feels like. It really does not. It's only a small part of the story and we’ve always been open about that. Please get in a room and experience this stuff!
Room mics? We said we were going to get into that, but didn’t. We felt it would add more confusion. Let the record show we adjust the gain on the room mics in keeping with the close mics for each of the loud and quiet sounds.

Welcome to the show! Loved by many and perhaps hated by more, the dear old wah-wah filtered its way into our consciousness thanks largely to a certain Mr Hendrix in the late 1960s. Since then it’s been used across a great many genres of music, becoming synonymous with a handful of truly great guitar players. Dare we still use it? Does it immediately pigeonhole us into those wonderful clichés? Let’s see if we can offer up a couple of different ways to wah…
Today’s board explanation… We are both going through the same G3, but with separate signal paths.
My pedals – Mick here, hello – are the Jam Wahcko Wah, Fulltone Wah, Kingtone Fuzz, Box Of Rock and Echoplex, routed in to G3 Loop 1 and out to the Two-Rock from G3 loop 5.
Dan’s pedals are the Vox HW Wah, Phase 90, OCD, Juju and Halo, routed in to G3 loop 6 and out of the main output to the Marshall.

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! Now there was a time when the Electro-Voice EVM12L speaker was the Undisputed King Of Drivers. Some argue that it still is, but for the most part the dear old EV has taken something of a popularity battering since its 1980s heyday. Nevertheless, I’ve become marginally obsessed with chasing some Dumble-type tones of late – Mick here, hello – and that has led me down a path of acquiring an EV or three. I really //really// like ’em. And then, during a chance happening with Andy Timmons just recently, Dan and I were served up stark sonic reminder that these can be great on the end of all kinds of amps. Watch that show here youtu.be/CMdG-WjTtgk All of which got us to thinking… What about some amps that you wouldn’t normally associate with the hallowed 200-watt behemoth loudspeaker? Could it ever sound good with the Princeton or an AC15, for example? Let’s find out…

Welcome to the show! Regular viewers will know Simon Jarrett by now. He’s a regular visitor to TPS, bringing incredible guitar playing alongside exceptional tones and knowledge. He also happens to make some of the finest amps and pedals on the planet, so he’s the perfect companion on our never ending sonic quest. In this episode we get into the nitty-gritty of ‘proper’ valve preamps and the subsequent considerations for the rest of your rig including what you need to think about in effects loops, your amp’s phase inverter/power amp and so on. Insodoing, Simon shows us a couple of his latest creations that are the culmination of many things we’ve discussed over the years. Thanks as always to Simon and his better half Chrissy for dropping in on their periodic visit to the UK from Canada! Enjoy the show!

Welcome to the show! Well, it’s been an emotional week. The brilliant, mesmerising, mercurial and completely mega Andy Timmons has been with us to play some shows, create some tones and indeed make this here video. We go through Andy’s approach to guitar tones, get a personal demo of his new Halo Dual Echo from Robert Keeley and generally chew the fat on life, playing and this weird obsession we call guitar. He even makes us cry. What a week! Enjoy the video…

We have a very special guest today, Mr Andy Timmons! Dan and I have just had the most incredible few days hanging with Andy and doing some gigs. It's been an absolute honour, an education and indeed a thoroughly life-affirming experience. So before we pack him off to his next adventure in Italy, we thought we'd invite him on VCQ so you folks can ask a question or 20. Nice!

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! Whether you’re relatively new to using guitar effects pedals, or you’ve been using a select few stomps for years, this video will offer some inspiration on how to expand on your existing palette of tones. However if you are just getting started, check out last week’s video first: youtu.be/XXml_trkAxY where we suggest ideas for your first three pedals.
This video picks up where last week’s left off – overdrive, delay and tremolo – and considers where to go next for the main food groups of sounds. We listen to some other overdrive, boost and fuzz flavours, plus take in chorus, rotary speaker, a more characterful delay, reverb and an envelope filter.
PLEASE NOTE: We like each of these pedals a great deal, but the specific pedals themselves is not the point. The point is about the effects types and groups, so choose whatever brand and budget that appeals to you most!
And for everyone one who says your first pedal should be a tuner. No it shouldn't. Get a headstock tuner to help, but even better than that, please learn to tune by ear. You don't need a pedal tuner until you're doing gigs. Big love y'all!
