World’s Toughest Boat Trips - The Arctic: youtu.be/s4gxi9lQO1A
This series explores some of the most fascinating and hard-core boat journeys on the planet. We undertake epic journeys by boats in some of the toughest environments on earth. During our journeys we look at how the technology of boat travel has been adapted to survive, trade with and connect isolated communities.
On a remarkable 250 mile, 3 day journey through remote rainforest, Holly Morris travels by cargo boat down one of the remotest stretches of the Amazon, in Peru. Sleeping in a hammock at night, she shares deck space with over 200 local Peruvians, and countless boxes of vegetables and fruit, heading to the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon, Iquitos.
Marooned in the middle of the jungle, hundreds of miles from the nearest connecting road, Iquitos is the biggest city in the world that you can’t drive to, with a population of half a million. Exploring the history of this unique and remarkable city, Holly learns how Iquitos became incredibly rich a century ago during the Amazon’s rubber boom. Back then, high quality rubber could only be obtained from trees growing in the Amazon, and with millions of newly invented bicycles, motorbikes and cars all needing to run on tyres, the region’s rubber came to be worth a fortune.
After heading upriver on a small Amazonian boat known as a ‘peque peque’, in order to meet an indigenous tribe whose ancestors used to be rubber tappers during the rubber boom, Holly travels on the last leg of her journey, to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve.
Her means of transport amidst the beautiful and remote rainforest of the Pacaya-Samiria is an extremely historic, rubber boom era steamboat, which is the oldest boat still working on the Amazon today. Holly ends her epic journey through the Amazon surrounded by spectacular wildlife, including the legendary and rarely seen Amazonian pink river dolphin.

The Filipino Tribe That Lives Inside a Volcano: youtu.be/t9vyx8hLa-k
Lamalera: a remote village of 2 500 people on the southern coast of Indonesia. In this hostile land where nothing grows, people have managed to survive only thanks to a spectacular age-old hunt: the traditional and sacred harpooning of sperm whales. Despite danger and hard lives, the villagers have always been self-sufficient, living according to their traditions, far from globalization. But today, this balance is about to be broken. As people from a neighboring island start fishing with dynamite, the whales are disappearing. With no more whales to hunt, Lamalera is dying.
In order to survive and feed their families, some villagers decide to embrace modernity and start using motors to fish further away from the island. But others want to preserve their traditional way of life at all costs, leading to a serious conflict of generations. Ancient social codes are falling apart. «Everybody for himself» is becoming the new model. Meanwhile, environmental protectionists are getting worried about overfishing and plan to turn the area into a natural reserve. What can we imagine for the last whale hunters? When globalization strikes and people are torn between the preservation of traditions and the need for modernity, discover how an entire village has to confront a new kind of battle, an ultimate battle—for their survival.

World’s Toughest Boat Trips - Peru: youtu.be/sQisJQgDv8Q
This series explores some of the most fascinating and hard-core boat journeys on the planet. We undertake epic journeys by boats in some of the toughest environments on earth. During our journeys we look at how the technology of boat travel has been adapted to survive, trade with and connect isolated communities.
In this episode, Globe Trekker adventurer Holly Morris explores the waters that shaped America – the Great Lakes. Covering 94,000 square miles, the Great Lakes are the largest reservoir of fresh water on the planet and one of the world’s busiest waterways. For centuries these waters have been a critical trade artery, determining the history and economy of North America and the world.
Our episode starts in Detroit, where we learn about the river’s role during prohibition in the rum-running trade. We then head up the stunning coast of Lake Huron, exploring some of Michigan’s 3200 miles of lakeshore. In Oscoda we learn about the very first shipping industry – lumber, the history Michigan’s green gold and how boats were used to build America. On the way to the Northern Peninsular Holly gets a head for heights and climbs 550ft up Mackinac Bridge. The views are stunning across the Mackinac straits and the glassy surface of Lakes Michigan and Huron.
It’s not always plain sailing though and on the rugged shoreline of the Shipwreck Coast, Holly joins a team of Marine archaeologists in their search for sunken treasure. Scanning the murky depths of Lake Superior we discover a watery graveyard and the skeletons of unlucky ships, swallowed by the waves.
For the final part of our journey we board the toughest boat of them all, a 1014ft giant on her way to pick up 70,000 tonnes of Montana coal. Spending three days on board, Holly meets the crew of modern day mariners and finds out what life is like living on the lakes. We pass through the treacherous St Mary’s river, navigating and the Soo Locks, the busiest canal system in the world. After 3 days and 2 nights on board, powering across the largest lake in the world, we arrive in our final destination, the twin ports of Duluth and Superior. Its an epic adventure and a story of big industry, modern history and real lives.

During our journeys we look at how the technology of boat travel has been adapted to survive, trade with and connect isolated communities.
Starting his journey at the southern end of Lake Tanganyika, the world’s largest freshwater lake, Zay travels north for over 300 miles on the extraordinary ‘Liemba’, which is not only said to be the world’s oldest surviving passenger ferry, but also has an incredible wartime history. The imposing 230 foot long ship, originally named the Graf von Goetzen, was built in 1913, when Tanzania was part of colonial German East Africa. At the start of WWI in 1914, the ship was converted into a warship, fitted with powerful guns to fight ships from nearby British and Belgian colonies. In 1916, however, the ship’s German commanders were forced to scuttle it in order to prevent its capture by the British or Belgians. The location of the sunken ship was soon discovered, and when the war ended in 1918, the British and Belgians attempted to lift it up from the lake bed. In 1924 it was finally raised to the surface, and astonishingly, despite being underwater for 8 years, was in good enough condition to be placed back into service as a passenger ship. Today, a century on, it continues to provide a vital service ferrying hundreds of local Tanzanians up and down the lake. After a fantastically enjoyable two-day journey aboard the Liemba, stopping at remote villages along the way, Zay disembarks at Kigoma, towards the northern end of Lake Tanganyika.
Heading on from there in a ‘lake taxi’, that is a small overcrowded open boat carrying over 100 villagers together – Zay reaches Gombe Stream National Park, where he goes trekking through the forest in search of wild chimpanzees. Zay’s luck is in, and he has a rare and remarkable encounter at close quarters with an extended family group of over 20 chimpanzees. 150 years ago, the central African region around Lake Tanganyika was a main location where slaves were captured, an estimated 1.5 million of whom were force-marched over 750 miles to the coast of the Indian Ocean, before being shipped by dhow to the slave market on the island of Zanzibar off the Tanzanian coast.
For the last part of his journey Zay follows this tragic and traumatic trail, sailing on a traditional working dhow trading goods to Zanzibar. Traders have sailed the Indian Ocean for thousands of years in these tough and historic boats, whose design has barely changed since the days they carried slaves. The ocean crossing by dhow is a spectacular though poignant end to Zay’s once-in-a-lifetime Tanzanian adventure.

Mumbai - A Tale of Contrasts: youtu.be/t6Rv1jwfGi4
Namibia has the third highest levels of income inequality in the world. 6% of the population own 70% of the land and here, the wounds of German Colonisation run deep. Between 1904 -1908, the Germans established concentration camps where the indigenous Herero and Nama people were interned. Up to 80% of them died in what Germany later recognised as the first genocide of the 20th Century. While the descendants of these victims, like Karvita, live on illegal settlements in constant fear of eviction, the descendants of these colonists continue to own most of the land and have no problem justifying their inheritance.
Most of Namibia’s vast natural resources are owned or controlled by foreigners. The diamond industry is dominated by DeBeers and the ruling Swapo party, widely seen as corrupt, is propped up by its historic ally: China. The construction and uranium industries are controlled by the Chinese and documents leaked in 2021 revealed that North Korea was illegally subcontracted to build the country’s State House.
Most of the country is sparsely populated, enabling nature to flourish. It’s home to one to one of the greatest wildlife populations in the world, including the only free roaming black rhinos. But these animals are constantly threatened by Chinese mafia while global warming is increasing desertification, threatening indigenous communities.

00:47:11 India’s Love Cheat Detectives

Unreported World went inside one such ladies detective agency in Delhi where the number of private investigators has increased by 30% in the last five years. 01:10:14 Bollywood MeToo

The team talk to some of the country’s top actresses who are speaking out against assault, sexual harassment and rape. Extreme India - Cow Vigilantes, Disabled Dating & More: youtu.be/KMHwx44ppEE
It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the 2 km. slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

Most Dangerous Ways To School - China: youtu.be/2stym7bSAng
Pema is a Tibetan whose plans for the future are being thwarted by his past. He is his parents' only son, and they want him to return to the village of his birth, marry a local girl and take care of them. He and his sisters spent their youth in a children's home in the city, while his parents stayed behind in their remote Himalayan village. Together with his sisters, one of whom was adopted by a Dutch couple and grew up in the Netherlands, Pema goes to visit the distant village. The only way to their family's home is a 10-day trek through the mountains.
After a warm reunion, tensions quickly rise: the parents expect their only son to accept his responsibility, get married and tend to their land. But Pema can't imagine life in this isolated place devoid of computers or books, and he also wants to save his sisters from a similar fate. With spectacular cinematography of the mountainous landscape as its background, this documentary presents a sensitive generational conflict that reveals the contrasts between choosing for a primitive life in the mountains, the future that parents want for their children, and the extinction of traditions. Pema and his Westernized sisters don't want to abandon their parents, but they also look forward to their own, modern existence.

Each episode sees the creation of a single, traditional artwork or object from scratch. The episode then ends with the object being displayed, worn, or used. But this linear structure is simply a medium to explore what the object really means, and its broader cultural context.
We discover the artist’s biography, their inspirations and calling. We come to understand the materials they use, how, and where they are sourced, and explore what these objects mean to the communities these artists live in.
Handmade in Africa prioritises intimate access, celebrating the beautiful detail within each object, the techniques employed by each craftsperson, and draws viewers into the life of one primary artist (or one small family group) while also giving a sense of the community and village life going on around them.
These are fly-on-the-wall films in the truest sense, and allow the audience to gain a unique perspective not just on the artworks and objects, but on the lives of the people who make them.

Unreported World - Italy's Mafia Hunters: youtu.be/GcS5rih3xIs
00:00:00 North Korea's Greatest Show
Is North Korea changing? Its relations with the rest of the world appear to be thawing after last year’s ‘rocket man’ nuclear missile crisis but does this mean anything is actually changing inside this hermit kingdom? Unreported World joined a business trip aimed at attracting foreign investment just as the country prepared to celebrate its 70th anniversary. Included in Marcel Theroux’s tour is a visit to what North Korea has described as its ‘Benidorm’, the Wonson beach resort, and the country’s only ski resort. But his highlight is a seat at the first Mass Games, the largest choreographed gymnastics event in the world in the world’s biggest stadium, taking place for the first time in five years. The theme of the Games is peace but did he believe the country is really opening up?
00:24:06 North Korea's Reality Stars
Unreported World explores the new genre of primetime TV shows gripping South Korea: 'Defector TV'. For more than half a century North Korea has remained the most closed-off, repressive regime on the planet, fuelling fear and propaganda in South Korea. Now, some of the 30,000 North Korean defectors are finding fame and celebrity on ‘Defector TV' shows and social media by revealing the truth about life under the Kim dynasty. Other defectors-cum-activists are funnelling information in and out across the border in an attempt to undermine Kim Jong-un’s grip on power. Seyi Rhodes investigates what is being coined ‘The Information War’. At every turn this film will reflect what's really happening inside the secret state of North Korea.

World's Most Feared Gang - Meet the Maras: youtu.be/ymS1fMM9wB8
They are one of the most notorious, violent gangs in Central America, turning cities into war zones and threatening the authority of the state. Famous for their tattoos and the cruelty of their crimes, the Maras have controlled Guatemala city for more than 20 years. They terrorise locals, trafficking drugs and people and running lucrative sidelines in contract killings, robberies and extortion.
The police are either corrupt or powerless to act and now people have started taking things into their own hands, forming militias and introducing check-points and armed patrols.
Thierry Gayton is one of the few journalists in the world to have filmed the Maras, their lives and their crimes. He also filmed with citizen’s militias, who themselves sometimes resort to violence. Filmed at great risk over several months, this is an exceptional look at the Maras.

This film will offer unique access to those territories, which gather millions of people within thousands of square kilometers.
The viewers can see for themselves what the daily lives of people living there look like – in Byelorussia, Norway, Japan, and Scotland. Through people’s testimonies and encounters with the scientists working in these open laboratories, the documentary intends to point out the substantial consequences of those nuclear catastrophes.

The Filipino Tribe That Lives Inside a Volcano - The Last Cavemen: youtu.be/t9vyx8hLa-k
The documentary series Extreme Tribe provides a rare look into the lives of the remote Mbendjele tribe. Told from a unique female perspective, filmmaker Livia Simoka spends five months with this community of hunter-gatherers living harmoniously within the jungle of the Republic of the Congo.
Almost entirely cut off from the outside world and inaccessible by road, Livia is welcomed by a close-knit family who treat her as their own. She is fully immersed in their daily lives from sharing in unexpected tragedies to observing the significance of tribal traditions like female tooth sharpening.
Traditionally they are regarded as egalitarian, with women on a broadly equal footing with men, but as Livia gains insight into their common practices including polygamy, she reveals a darker truth where domestic violence and male domination is still prevalent. Over the months she learns of the Mbendjele’s unique ways of surviving in the isolated rainforest and also discovers threats to their way of life, both from hostile neighbours and a new road that is planned to be built through their land.

Deadly Disasters - Earthquakes: youtu.be/JX27l9p7-qQ
Tropical cyclones are intense areas of low pressure that form over warm tropical waters. They are responsible for some of the most catastrophic extreme weather events. Their deadly winds and torrential rain wreak destruction on an unprecedented scale: Cyclone Nargis, which struck India in 2008, caused 12.1 billion U.S. dollars’ worth of damage; Cyclone Ida, one of the worst tropical cyclones on record to affect Africa and the Southern Hemisphere, ravaged Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi throughout March of 2019.
We use eyewitness accounts and expert analysis from some of the field's leading pioneers to get an up-close and personal look at one of the planet’s most terrifying storm systems.

World’s Toughest Places - Philippines: youtu.be/lAlh_oPOPfc
In 1978, the world learned about the existence of a previously undiscovered tribe: the Taaw’t Bato, a few hundred individuals hidden in the heart of the jungle on the Philippine island of Palawan. During the rainy season, they hide in giant natural caves for months to protect themselves from typhoons. They survive by fishing and hunting bats.
But the Philippine government decided that these semi-nomadic people needed to be made sedentary. Gradually leaving the jungle and the caves behind, the Taaw’t Bato discovered urban life – and extreme poverty. Yet, over the past few years, dozens of sedentary Taaw’t Bato families have made a radical choice: unable to fit into this new environment, they have decided to leave the city, return to the land of their ancestors, and settle there forever.
We will follow the incredible journey of one such family, which has chosen to embark on this journey back to the jungle. The elders will revive ancestral customs; the youths will have to learn everything. This will be a huge challenge for all of them: to survive the rainy season, they must make it all the way to the caves, their last refuge.

World's Most Feared Gang in Guatemala - Meet the Maras: youtu.be/ymS1fMM9wB8
In the company of a pastor, an assassin, and a crime reporter, this film examines the fine line between good and evil in the world's most dangerous city.
Priest and furniture maker Daniel Pacheco works in one of the most dangerous cities in the world: San Pedro Sula, Honduras. He tries to save lives, but that’s no simple matter in a country with staggeringly high murder rates. The killings are countless, not just by the drug cartels but also by the police and the army. Pacheco lives in the midst of it, risking his own life.
Reporting murders is everyday business for TV journalist Orlin Castro. He seems comfortable with the nocturnal violence, but at the same time, he dreams of a different, quieter life. A hitman named Matathan talks openly about his profession. He says he has had enough and wants to start a new, pious existence. But Pacheco, who knows him well, doubts his sincerity.
Following these three men, Dutch-American filmmaker Loretta van der Horst, who was born in Honduras, gets frighteningly close to the horrific violence that no one seems able to end. If you don’t value your own life, Pacheco explains, it’s easier to kill others.

Inside the Real Narcos - Complete Series: youtu.be/3ElxLS8BYQo
Guatemala is one of the most violent countries in the world. 95% of murders remain unsolved, and the ultra-violent Maras manage drug trafficking, prostitution, and racketeering in the country and spread terror among the population. After several weeks of negotiation, we gained access to some of these gangs.
In the favela of Villanueva, Pedro is at the head of Barrio 18. That he has reached the age of 32 is practically a miracle. It’s rare for gang members to live past 25. The police who try and control his gang are woefully under-equipped. Sometimes, they even have to buy their own ammunition.
Faced with these disturbing levels of violence and an impotent police force, many citizens are choosing to arm themselves. Gun sales have increased by 20% in just one year. Others prefer to join local militants and combat the gangs directly.

As an elite Special Forces soldier, Jason Fox hunted down drug lords around the world. In this bold new three-part series, he faces a different challenge: to meet the kind of people he was once sent to take out—from traffickers to cartel enforcers, assassins to underworld kingpins—to understand them, how they think, what makes them do what they do, their dreams and their fears.
More cynical about the role he once played, Jason travels through Mexico, Colombia, and Peru to reveal the hidden worlds of cartel criminality and drugs that he was once tasked with destroying.

Behind Bars in Romania - The World’s Toughest Prisons: youtu.be/CVngg4jpumk
The Executioner’s Shadow casts a penetrating look at the consequences of the death penalty through three powerful stories – a former state executioner who comes within days of executing an innocent person, a Boston Marathon bombing victim who struggles to decide what justice really means, and the parents of a murder victim who choose to fight for the life of their daughter’s killer.
As the battle over capital punishment heats up, this provocative film challenges viewers to question their deepest beliefs about the meaning of justice.

Behind Bars - Lepoglava, Croatia: youtu.be/jB9WLm52wP0
Rahova Prison on the outskirts of the two Million Mega-City Bucharest is the second biggest prison in Romania. Surrounded by two walls murderers, human traffickers, and worse are serving their sentences. Escaping from here is nearly impossible. Each cell wing is monitored separately. Cameras record all movements in its corridors. Prisoners are in their cells for twenty hours a day. They can only leave under the strictest security measures. Even a walk in the prison yard takes place in cages.
Prison Officer Alina is the chief of Unit Four. Anyone who ends up in this block has either committed a particularly horrific crime or attacked a guard or inmate. Alina is the only woman in this block. She is responsible for around two hundred, exclusively male prisoners. – a job that requires professionalism and a thick skin. In total Rahova Prison is housing 1400 inmates. Every week 60 to 70 new criminals arrive. Every newcomer must first go through an admission process - like 53-year-old Dragosch, who was convicted of serious fraud. Dragosch has already served three and a half years. Two months ago, he was released on probation. Then there was a change in the law. And now he has to serve out the rest of his sentence - a stressful situation for the former manager.
Inmate Atas, who was born in Turkey, has been in Rahova for eight years. He was sentenced to twenty-two years for murder. Atas shares a forty-square-meter cell with six other men. The furnishings are worn and spartan. There is just one toilet for seven prisoners and only one shower which also serves as a laundry room. While most prisoners have to sit in their cell for twenty hours a day, Atas is lucky enough to have landed one of the coveted jobs available to prisoners. At eight o’clock, a guard picks up Atas and his cellmates for work. He first searches everyone thoroughly, because now they’re meeting prisoners from other cells, a potentially dangerous situation. Atas works at the prison’s art workshop. Only those who have behaved well in prison are allowed to work here. The inmates do not receive any money. Instead, they receive bonus points that they can use for visits or special purchases. Atas used to be a successful businessman and earned millions. A stark contrast to his work in the workshop. And he is well aware that one small mistake, one misstep, and all his privileges will be lost.

Secrets of the Mega Hospital: youtu.be/g4iwLZjg4Mw
This documentary series combines the best of two worlds: love boat-style glam events as well as behind-the-scenes exclusive access onboard the world’s most famous ship, recently transformed into Dubai’s most extraordinary hotel in one of the grandest acts of modern-day upcycling.
00:00:00 Episode 1
Passengers from the 'Queen Mary 2' swap ships and check in to the 'QE2'. Burns Night celebrations demand that haggis be on the menu, but can ingredients be sourced in the UAE?
00:42:49 Episode 2
It's mid-February and Valentine's Day sees two big events happening on board - a lavish brunch for 450 people in the main dining room, followed by a romantic opera gala dinner out on deck. With the guests paying a premium for both, expectations are high. However, a late delivery threatens to derail the fine cuisine preparations, and - adding to the presage of doom - a storm spotted on the horizon seems set to put the open-air element of the gathering at risk of cancellation.
01:23:56 Episode 3
The 'QE2's most important dining establishment, the historic 'Queen's Grill' is undergoing a significant renovation. The designers are under pressure to deliver. The venue must suit the needs and demands of discerning visitors and tourists. Chef Dino and his staff are on their eighth tasting for the new menu - which still has not satisfied the 'QE2's owners. Issues also arise with the custom-made furniture for the ship's biggest suites, and the arrival of the replacement pieces interferes with a glamorous promotional photo shoot. There is also an inspirational reunion by the 'Hypher' family with many fond memories of what the 'QE2' represented.

Deadly Disasters - Tsunamis: youtu.be/o5qMfqcSkdQ
Human history is littered with stories of gigantic volcanic eruptions and the tragic fates of those who could not outrun the burning lava and poisonous gases. In our own times, volcanoes continue to cause large-scale destruction.
Volcanoes are put into three categories: extinct, dormant, and active. But in this episode we show how even unexpected eruptions can happen, and when they do, they are both spectacular and terrifying.
Sinabung in Indonesia erupted in 2010 after 400 years of dormancy causing chaos to thousands. We take a look at one of the most active volcanoes in Europe: the fiery giant Mount Etna. And then, how Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of Congo desolated a village.
We explore what draws flocks of tourists to nature’s deadly infernos, and whether they can ever truly be safe.
