The Star Spangled Banner (1817), by James Hewitt angloconc 2023-07-05 | Not the traditional tune - from the English drinking song "To Anacreon in Heaven" - but an American tune composed by James Hewitt (1770-1827) in New York in 1817, only three years after Francis Scott Key wrote his famous poem about the British bombardment of Fort McHenry. Hewitt was the orchestra leader of the Old American Company and was one of the leading musicians in New York City. His composition had been lost to history until a copy was discovered in Philadelphia and a facsimile reprint issued in 1930. A copy of that reprint just happened to be in a big box of old sheet music that I bought at a junk shop in Hobbs, New Mexico, many years ago, and this grand tune definitely deserves a wider audience.Originally in the key of G, it is transposed here to the key of C and played on a Wolverton C/G Anglo concertina. Recorded on the 4th of July, 206 years after it was written, and it took me almost that long to learn it! The dances are from the Bampton and Headington traditions and were learned from the Cecil Sharp books. Originally shot with a wind-up regular 8mm camera and a battery-operated super 8mm camera, converted to VHS, and then converted to m4v.
Da Slockit Light angloconc 2022-03-20 | Stuart Estell's beautiful arrangement of "Da Slockit Light" by Shetland fiddler Tom Anderson, played on a rare Jeffries Duet concertina made by Charles Jeffries about 1905. This version can be found on p.86 of "The Jeffries Duet Concertina Tutor" by Gary Coover. The tune was inspired by the slow depopulation of Anderson's birthplace, Eshaness, in the Shetland Islands. A "slockit" light is one that has been extinguished.
