WISA - 3rd Sustainable Aeronautics Summit - Canadian Electric Aviation & AAM Industry Update
The Vertical Flight Society attended the third annual Waterloo Sustainable Aeronautics Summit 2024 held in Waterloo, Ontario, one of Canada’s leading high tech communities. #WISASummit
This 1:30 hour Vertical Flight Society video is of the Summit session titled “Electric Aviation: Innovations, Retrofits, Training & eVTOLs” which included presentations by nine speakers covering recent electric aviation and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) developments in Canada.
The one-day event was organized by the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA), which was established in 2021 as a research institute at the University of Waterloo (UW), with direct support from the Faculties of Environment, Science, Engineering, Health, Mathematics, and Arts. The University of Waterloo is also home for the largest university-level aviation program in Canada.
Canada's aerospace industry is the world's seventh largest and contributed $28.9 billion to the Canadian economy in 2023. And Canada is also home for the world's second largest fleet of civilian aircraft and helicopters.
In Vancouver, British Columbia, Harbour Air is developing a STC electric retrofit for the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver seaplane utilizing a magniX Magni650 electric motor.
In Montreal, Quebec flight simulator leader CAE is developing a retrofit for the Piper PA-28 Archer and plans to convert many of its ab initio flight training aircraft to electric power. CAE operates a fleet of more than 200 training aircraft at flight schools in the US, Europe and Asia.
BETA Technologies of Vermont is developing eVTOL and eCTOL aircraft sharing a common airframe. Beta recently established an engineering office Montreal which is just north of Vermont.
The Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics and the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre acquired two battery-electric Pipistrel Velos Electra trainers in 2024 and are working closely with Transport Canada to obtain Canadian certification for the aircraft under a unique program that includes extensive flight testing to gather extensive data on the aircraft's operation, performance, handling qualities and flight training qualities.
And the Canadian Advanced Air Mobility (CAAM) initiative has been creating a cross-Canada community of electric aviation and AAM advocates, collaborators and researchers. VFS is CAAM member.
