I also incorporated a reptile hibernaculum, or hibernation den/chamber into the build. In addition, I also briefly discuss building a second reptile or amphibian hibernation chamber from only wood and wood products. This rubble crevice garden was heavily inspired by the recycled concrete crevice garden built by Plant Delights Nursery. However, their concrete consists of slabs of fairly regular size, while my rubble is irregular rough chunks more resembling tufa than anything else.

I harvested about 400 pounds of potatoes in 2020. The best variety by far was Yog Shoggoth, bred/selected by Oxbow Farm. This is a Tetraploid seedling of Tollocan, a Mexican late blight resistant variety. It was a challenging year for growing potatoes in 2020, with 3 late hard frosts, followed by an unusually hot dry summer and extreme insect pressure. My garden is in USDA ZONE 6b, Southern Pennsylvania, USA. Thanks for watching!

In this episode I discuss my experiences growing Cotton, Gossypium hirsutum , in my cold USDA zone 6b Pennsylvania garden. As an intellectual exercise I decided to use Anglish for all the text in this video. It was fun but challenging to make this one. If you aren’t familiar Anglish is a movement towards English linguistic purism, it basically is the attempt to only use words with a broadly Germanic etymological origin. There is an active movement of language enthusiasts online who enjoy these sorts of things. Hopefully the casual viewing audience won’t be too irritated with me for this ! Regarding Cotton- In my climate, it’s impossible to harvest any significant quantities of cotton fiber if you grow the plants in the open garden. It is generally possible to harvest a few mature pods with ripe seeds each year IF you start by planting out large started plants into the garden. I’ve typically used 4.5” pots and planted seedlings about 8-10” tall. All of my seed was sourced from Sandhill Preservation, but Southern Exposure Seed Exchange is also a great source of cotton seeds for planting.
Growing Cotton is very worthwhile as an educational experience. It’s interesting to learn how hard to pick and how hard to separate the seeds from the fibers can be. There is enormous historical value in these old colored fiber cotton strains, not all pleasant, but it’s a part of history and should be preserved. Cotton makes an pleasing ornamental as it’s in the Hibiscus family, Malvaceae. It bears the typical showy Hibiscus flowers, and the pods can be useful in dried arrangements, wreaths, or other crafts.
If you want to learn more about growing Cotton, check out this guide from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.

In this episode I discuss my experience growing and eating the ‘Dester’ tomato variety. Dester is a large, oblate, pink beefsteak tomato. The fruits routinely reach over 1 pound, 500 grams, and are very meaty, with few seeds. Texture is quite soft, and skin is thin, so not a great shipping tomato. Reasonably productive although like most beefsteak heirloom tomatoes, it will not set fruit in higher temperatures. It is a fairly early variety for it’s class, I was able to get ripe fruits in approximately 60-75 days. Disease resistance is better than average for an heirloom, some Septoria, but holds on a long time before succumbing. My seed source was Baker Creek.
Plants are extremely vigorous regular leaf indeterminate vines. I had 9 feet, 2.47 meter vines in 60-75 days. My location is Southern Pennsylvania, USA, USDA zone 6b. Video was originally recorded July 30, 2019.

Episode 63.Esoteric Agriculture2020-11-14 | In this episode I describe my experience growing, harvesting, storing, and eating Anchote, Coccinia abyssinica. This unusual Ethiopian tuber crop has tremendous potential to be grown in areas outside of Africa. I sourced the seeds from J.L. Hudson, Seedsman. jlhudsonseeds.net My growing environment is USDA Zone 6b, United States, Pennsylvania, North America. I document leaves, flowers, immature and mature fruits, and tubers. I discuss my attempts to store the tubers, and I record myself tasting the fruits and my reactions to the flavor. Anchote is in the squash family, Cucurbitaceae, but the tuber is the edible and tasty portion instead of the fruits. I believe this may be the only video on YouTube documenting growing Anchote. It’s probably also the only video of anyone eating Anchote fruit. In this episode I demonstrate ( somewhat poorly) a traditional Austrian Polenta recipe, suggested by a viewer, Teosinte. Many thanks to Teosinte for making this video possible. Complete recipe below-
Polenta mit Apfeln
Zutaten: .05L Wasser, 1 Prise Salz, ca. 200g Maisgreiss, 5 EL Obers, 2 EL Honig, Vanille, Zitronenschale, (ungespritz) , 100g Butter, ca. 0.5 kg Apfel, 50 g Rosinen, 2 Eier, ein Schuss Rum.
Backen.
Polenta with apples
0.5 Liter Water, one pinch of salt, approximately 200 grams of Polenta corn (coarsely ground) 5 Tablespoons Cream, 2 Tablespoons Honey, lemon zest, (untreated), 100 grams Butter, about 0.5 Kilograms Apples, 50 grams raisins, 2 eggs, a shot of rum.
Preparation:
Stir the Polenta into the salted water, boil until a thick mass is formed. Stir in the cream, spices, eggs and rum. Melt butter in a casserole, fill it with the corn mixture, sprinkle it with sliced apples and raisins. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes.
**IMPORTANT NOTE **
Teosinte suggests mixing most of the melted butter into the cornmeal mixture, and only reserving enough butter to grease the casserole dish. Teosinte also suggests sprinkling with powdered sugar when finished.
My notes- I used about a teaspoon of vanilla, Bronze Beauty Flint Corn, Goldrush apples, Bulleit Bourbon in place of the rum, and the zest from one small orange as I didn’t have rum or a lemon at the time of baking. I also cooked it at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 45 minutes.

I attempt charcoal production using the trench method and the kiln method. My charcoal making attempts were originally inspired by posts on Terra Preta on the Homegrown Goodness forum, and by presentations and videos by Dale Hendricks. Much more recently, I was greatly inspired by 3 awesome YouTube channels- Primitive Technology, Skill Cult, and EdibleAcres. This video stylistically owes very much to Primitive Technology.

On May 5 2018 I visited Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve in Conestoga Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA. This remarkable site consists of a narrow ravine cut by a small stream through limestone. The stream enters the Susquehanna River at this location. Most of the similar ravines in the area lack the limestone , which creates a highly diverse and locally unique flora. Native wildflowers, in particular spring ephemerals, are extraordinarily abundant here. A few highlights are Trillium flexipes, Phlox divaricata, Arisaema triphylla, Asimina triloba, Galearis spectabilis, and many, many others.
