Part of the experience of playing DOOM is its sound track. And while we can't install a DOS-compatible sound card into the iPAD, as the SoC in the device doesn't have ISA support, we can do the next best thing: try a Serial-to-MIDI device with an external wavetable module.
Tuesday, we were able to get EMM386 and SoftMPU running on the OASys iPAD, thanks to switching to SD card boot. However, we ran into the showstopper issue of SoftMPU not working with games like DOOM that use their own 32-bit extender.
But did I give up too "fast"? Maybe there's anther DOOM engine that natively supports Serial MIDI output, which would eliminate the need for SoftMPU (and maybe even EMM386 itself). At a cursory glance, FastDOOM does appear to have said support. And maybe I have a cable that can connect the iPAD to the MIDICloud RS-232, as the iPAD transmitting on pin 3 might mean a Cisco console cable would work.
Will it FastDOOM? Will we see serial traffic while FastDOOM is running? Will I manage to find a console cable? Will we hear MIDI music before the stream ends? You'll have to watch to find out!
