Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey: A Visual Masterpiece That Missed the Point?
I just watched Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated adaptation of Homer's Odyssey in 70mm, and I have THOUGHTS! Don't get me wrong—the movie is an absolute cinematic triumph. The visuals are thrilling, the monster designs (like the Cyclops) are terrifying, and Matt Damon crushed his role. It is incredibly entertaining and an absolute must-watch.
HOWEVER, as someone deeply fascinated by ancient classicists and biblical history, I am both in love with this film and a little pissed off.
In this video, I break down why Nolan's film projects modern, post-Plato/Christian morals onto Odysseus, completely stripping away the brilliant, deceptive, and witty nature that made him a true Bronze Age hero. We dive deep into:
Why the ancient Greeks actually praised lying and deception in warfare.
The crucial scenes the movie left out or changed (from the bag of winds to the heartbreaking reunion in Hades).
The fascinating, undeniable influence that Homer’s Odyssey had on the Bible, drawing parallels between Odysseus, Jacob, Jonah, and even the demoniac episode in the Gospel of Mark!
Even with my nitpicks, this movie is a massive win because it will introduce millions of people to the greatest epic ever told. Watch the review, then go watch the movie!
