Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia, marked one of the most significant and controversial moments in modern European history. While the United States and most European Union members quickly recognised Kosovo as a sovereign state, many nations—including Russia, China, and more than half of the UN—refused to do so. The ongoing divide has kept Kosovo’s status a subject of global debate and, despite backing from powerful Western allies, it continues to struggle with deep political instability, not least due to the disruptive leadership of Kosovo PM Albin Kurti, unresolved ethnic tensions, and stalled negotiations with Serbia.
In this interview with journalist and commentator Bronwyn Jones, we analyse why ties between Kosovo’s Albanian majority and Serbian minority continue to be strained by mistrust, while efforts at normalisation with Serbia remain stalled. We also discuss why Kosovo’s ties with the European Union and United States—once its strongest supporters—are weaker than ever. Given the headwinds, the critical question for Kosovo remains: is there a path forward for one of Europe’s most disputed territories?
