Appalachian coal country is a very talked-about region in the United States, and it will undoubtedly be talked about even more in coming months. Geology has shaped the coal country landscape both topographically and economically, but very little geologic history of the region is readily available. This video talks about how the ancient Appalachian Basin has been exposed and carved up by erosion, creating and incredibly rugged landscape and exposing large amounts of good quality, mineable coal.
