The musty smell on washed laundry comes from a bacterium called Moraxella osloensis and a chemical it produces called 4-methyl-3-hexenoic acid. In this video I explain how it survives the wash, why your washing machine itself is part of the problem, and what you can do about it. I also look at residual water from my own machine under the microscope.
