Combining dramatic re-creations, archival imagery, artworks, graphics and expert interviews, the documentary traces how Whistler — famous for his sharp tongue, flamboyant persona and impeccable fashion — crafted not only groundbreaking paintings but also one of the first true artist brands in history.
From childhood, Whistler rejected convention and pursued an uncompromising artistic path. His search for purity of tone and composition helped lead painting toward abstraction, challenging Victorian expectations and redefining modern aesthetics. His near-abstract works enraged some critics, leading to the infamous libel trial in which Whistler defended his artistic vision and ultimately shifted the course of art criticism.
Famed for Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1 (his portrait of his mother) and often compared to Velázquez and Rembrandt, Whistler rose to become one of Europe’s most admired painters.
