The trajectory of twentieth-century aviation fundamentally shifted the moment Frank Whittle dared to replace the piston engine with a revolutionary gas turbine. The vintage archival footage showcased in this comprehensive documentary has been upscaled and restored, appearing in authentic colorized versions to illuminate the historical reality of the era. Beginning in the years following World War I, Whittle, a brilliant young RAF pilot and engineer, theorized that flying at high altitudes required an entirely new method of propulsion. Despite early skepticism and a terrifying initial engine test in 1937 that accelerated completely out of control, Whittle’s persistence eventually resulted in the Gloster E.28/39. Taking flight in May 1941, this experimental aircraft proved that propeller-less flight was not only possible, but the inevitable future of aerial combat.
As war ravaged Europe, the British government realized the strategic value of Whittle’s invention but lacked the immediate resources to prioritize it over conventional Spitfires and Hurricanes. In a highly classified exchange, the blueprints and a prototype engine were shipped across the Atlantic to the United States. General Electric was tasked with secretly reverse-engineering and manufacturing the powerplants, known as the Type I-A, while the Bell Aircraft Company was given a mere six months to design an airframe capable of harnessing this new technology. Through meticulously restored footage, the profound impact of these brilliant engineers and early pioneers is brought back to life for modern audiences.
