On 2 September 1990, the Reverend Jesse Jackson arrived at Heathrow Airport along with a group of Western hostages released from Iraq during the Gulf crisis. Their freedom followed Jackson’s independent mission to Baghdad, where he negotiated directly with Iraqi officials after Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait led to the detention of Western civilians. A leading figure in the US civil rights movement and a close associate of Martin Luther King Jr, Jackson was best known for his domestic activism, but in 1990 he played an unexpected role as an informal international negotiator.
