Tennis has a problem, particularly in the men's game, of becoming a little … dull. In the last 30 years, the average number of aces fired down in best-of-three matches on the ATP Tour has increased by 60 per cent, from 7.6 to 12.2.

This era of 'servebots' make breaks of serve, which provide swings of momentum and essentially decide the outcome of matches, harder to come by. It has also resulted in fewer winners and forced errors in that same 30-year period, while the number of unforced errors has remained constant. All of this damages the sport's entertainment value.

Fans want to see two things – long rallies, where each player is manoeuvred around the court, stretching their physical capabilities, and clean winners, often from tight or wide angles. They don't want to see serve-dominant games or rallies with little to no movement.

So how can we encourage more prolonged, more varied rallies, more winners from unlikely spots and reduce the effectiveness of the serve – and thus provide more interesting tennis?
