A short circuit happens when the source of control within a circuit is removed.
Think of a lamp in a simple circuit. The lamp acts as resistance. It keeps the current at a safe level and stops it from going too high.
But if you remove the lamp, there is nothing left to resist the current. The resistance drops to zero.
When resistance is zero, the current rises extremely fast. For example, it can jump from 1 amp to 1000 amps in an instant.
That sudden, uncontrolled rise in current is what we call a short circuit.
