Have you ever wondered what a listed building is? In this video, we look at three examples of listed buildings on the National Heritage List for England and explore what makes them special.
Listing covers more than just castles and stately homes. It can include banks, garden walls, shops, mills, bridges, synagogues, factories, etc. Not all listed buildings are centuries old, and many are still in use.
Listing celebrates and protects England’s special buildings, and anyone can recommend a building for listing through our application process. Once a building is listed, changes that might affect its special interest have to be managed through the planning system.

Hut 8 at Bletchley Park (Grade II listed)
Shortly before the Second World War began, the Government Code and Cipher School, needing a safe and secret location away from London, moved to Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire.
Large, plain huts like Hut 8 were built on the grounds, and it was here that the Bombe machine, designed by Alan Turing, helped break the Enigma code.
The crucial work of the thousands of people who worked in the wider Bletchley organisation, 75% of whom were women, helped shorten the war by an estimated two to four years and saved countless lives.

The Blue Anchor Inn (Grade II listed)
The Blue Anchor started life in the 15th century as a rest house run by monks, who also brewed mead on the site.
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, it became a tavern and a brewery, today selling its own ales which it has been brewing on site for hundreds of years.
It has played a central role in the social lives of Helston locals for centuries and around 100 years ago, local tin miners even began receiving their wages at the bar.

Addleshaw Tower (Grade II listed)
Addleshaw Tower, dubbed the 'Chester rocket', is a free-standing bell tower next to Chester Cathedral built between 1973 and 1975 by architect George G. Pace. It's built of reinforced concrete frame hung with Bethesda slates and a pink sandstone ashlar base.
It's the first free-standing bell tower to be built by a cathedral since the 15th century and revives and re-interprets this tradition.
