For many years, I've focused on the ways an advanced non-human civilization might differ from our own. In this video, I'd like to explore the opposite question. What might we actually have in common? This is a speculative discussion rather than an attempt to present definitive answers.
Drawing on anthropology, the history of civilization, information theory, and decades of UFO research, I consider the possibility that any technological civilization, wherever it arises, must eventually confront many of the same fundamental challenges: managing knowledge, increasing complexity, coordination, and long-term survival.
If so, then in addition to offering clues about advanced Non-Human Intelligences, the UFO mystery may also provide an opportunity to think more deeply about the nature of civilization itself—and perhaps about our own future as a species.
My friend Whitley Strieber is teaching a course called Transformation 2026: The Fourth Mind, which explores the forgotten human capacities that may be exactly what we need as a species facing this kind of cosmic challenge.
