How Generational Spaceship Sci-Fi Changed Over Time

The Ansible Library 2026-05-23 | Generation ships might be one of my favorite concepts in all of science fiction.

Recently I fell down a rabbit hole reading stories about massive spacecraft carrying humanity across the stars over the course of centuries. Entire civilizations being born, living, and dying aboard ships traveling toward distant worlds. What surprised me most was how differently authors across decades approached the exact same idea.

In this first episode of Return to Star Wars Legends, I revisit The Paradise Snare by A. C. Crispin, the beginning of the Han Solo Trilogy and one of the Expanded Universe stories that helped shape my love of Star Wars growing up.

For many fans, Han Solo’s origin story is tied to the film Solo: A Star Wars Story. But long before that movie existed, Legends gave us a very different look at how Han became the smuggler we met in A New Hope. In this video I revisit The Paradise Snare to see whether it still holds up.

This episode also kicks off a long-term project: reading Star Wars novels in chronological order and revisiting the Expanded Universe as an adult reader. The Dark Side of First Contact in Sci-Fi

The Ansible Library 2026-02-21 | In this video, I’m doing a mass review of the books I’ve been reading so far this year. Spanning epic fantasy, dystopian fiction, and some deeply unsettling sci-fi first contact stories.

We start with Wizard and Glass by Stephen King, book four of The Dark Tower Saga, as I revisit Roland’s past and reflect on how this prequel-style entry hit very differently on a reread.

From there, I dive into Blindsight by Peter Watts. A brutal, high-concept first contact novel that completely upended my expectations about intelligence, consciousness, and humanity’s place in the universe.

I also talk about listening to Vox by Christina Dalcher, a bleak dystopian story that echoes The Handmaid’s Tale and 1984, and explores how easily rights can be stripped away when people stay silent.

Finally, I wrap things up with Gateway by Frederik Pohl, the first book in the Heechee saga. A fascinating take on first contact through abandoned alien technology, fear, greed, and the cost of survival.

This Small Book Haul Hit Just Right

This isn't a very big book haul for this month. The busy holiday season kept me from hitting up my usually bookstores. But I was very happy with the variety of classic sci-fi, new sci-fi, and unknown sci-fi that I did manage to get. Hopefully, in the new year, I will be able to get out a bit more and find these hidden treasures!
