A Year Later: Life, Challenges, and the GoFundMe Campaign for the Lea Family HamRadio.World 2023-05-02 | Hello, HamRadio.World viewers! It's been a while since our last update, and we wanted to share with you what's been happening in our lives over the past year. In this video, I (James, WX4TV). discuss the challenges that I've faced, including the loss of my limbs and the fight for a prosthetic leg. I also touch on the impact that these events have had on our family and our daily lives.As many of you may know, I've experienced significant health issues, including amputations of all or some of my 10 fingers and both legs below the knee, which led to the need for a prosthetic leg. Unfortunately, I've faced difficulties in obtaining the left prosthetic leg due to decisions made by my insurance provider.In addition to these challenges, our family has been dealing with financial strain as a result of my disability and medical expenses. To help cover these costs and support our family, we have started a GoFundMe campaign. The funds raised will go towards living expenses, transportation to and from doctor appointments, a wheelchair-accessible van, rent, and the possible purchase of a handicap-accessible home.In this video, I provide an update on our situation and share our story with the HamRadio.World community. YOTA 2021 - Learning how to Amateur Radio Contest HamRadio.World 2021-07-13 | #yotar2The evening activity for the campers at the first Youth on the Air (YOTA) camp in IARU Region 2 was a session about amateur radio contesting. One of the campers, Bryant (KG5HVO), is a very accomplished contester and he gave a short presentation about the basics of radio sport contesting, specifically the Sprint form of contesting.For some background, according to ssbsprint.com, here is some information about Spring contesting: ""The North American Sprints (usually just called “Sprints”) are short, intense competitions which challenge the best operators, while allowing others to sharpen their skills. Lasting only four hours and using only the 80, 40 and 20-meter bands, these contests demand that participants be on their toes at all times.The Sprints’ unique QSY requirements eliminate the usual approach in many contests of dominant stations sitting on one frequency and running others. These are contests of constant motion."After Bryant's presentation, the campers were given the opportunity to participate in an "Eyeball Sprint" contest. The first contest was pretty benign, but wait for the second contest, which got rather exciting! Ham Radio Kit Building at YOTA Camp HamRadio.World 2021-07-12 | The campers at the first YOTA (Youth on the Air) ham radio camp at the Voice of America museum in Cincinnati, OH spent most of the day building their direction finding receivers that they will use on Thursday in what is called a "Fox Hunt". This popular ham radio activity involves using receivers with directional antennas to find a hidden transmitter. The campers will use their receivers to locate the hidden transmitter during their fox hunt later in the week.Camp is progressing very nicely and the campers are making memories that will last lifetimes. Testing the Thermacell MR300 Mosquito Repeller HamRadio.World 2021-06-21 | The 2021 ARRL Field Day event is being held on June 26 and 27, 2021 and thousands of amateur radio operators, or "hams" will take their amateur radio gear into the field and operate on the air for twenty-four hours. One common factor in nearly every Field Day operation will be the presence of mosquitoes!As our dad James (WX4TV) knows all too well, mosquitoes can carry diseases such as Malaria, Dengue Fever, Zika Virus, EEE, and West Nile Virus. Dad has had malaria a few times and contracted Dengue Fever back on 2009 while in Sint Maarten. Most recently, he contracted West Nile Virus Encephalitis while serving in Marsh Harbor in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. This bout with WNE nearly killed our dad and has left him with potentially life-long debilitating effects.Because of this, we started looking for a good way to repel mosquitoes. We already use Permethrin (amzn.to/3gGMpuI) on our tent, and Dad uses it on his clothes when he deploys to places where there are a lot of mosquitoes, but we wanted to also find something that would help keep the mosquitoes away. One of our local amateur radio friends is an avid hunter here in Florida, and he suggested that we try the Thermacell products (amzn.to/35GBdcs). This video shows the Thermacell MR300 that we purchased from Amazon while Hope and Dad are standing in the protective dome made by the Thermacell MR300. We made this video during the time of day when mosquitoes are most prevalent and we did not receive any mosquito bites! We will be using several of these Thermacell MR300 units during the ARRL Field Day amateur radio event this weekend and will post another video to let everyone know how they worked.
