They're the bluegrass band from Kalamazoo, Michigan who won the "best band" competition at Telluride a few years back. Their version of this song has great instrumental breaks between the verses. For my version, I strum and get out.
Outfit - ukulele Drive-By Truckers cover ukeyermind 2010-09-28 | Drive-By Truckers are one of my favorite bands. You should check them out. I emailed the band and asked for permission to post an ukulele cover on YT, and they said yes. I chose this song because it's about fathers and sons and I've had father/son relationships on my mind pretty much non-stop this summer. My father became suddenly, seriously ill this summer and ended up spending 8 weeks in the hospital, most of that time in critical condition. (Did you notice I'd been missing these last few months?) Well, Dad is home and he's doing well, so there's no time for sympathy - we are in CELEBRATION mode. I only mention it because one of the first things Dad asked for when he started feeling more like himself was an ukulele. I'd been bringing mine to the hospital from time to time, and he decided he wanted one to keep him company while he regains complete mobility. Ukuleles don't grow on trees, but life has a way of working out. About a year or so ago, UkeIndy's dad was going through some medical issues of his own. At the time, there was a thread on the UU discussing "who would you give a uke to if you could?" Lonna let it be known that she'd give her dad one, and durned if *someone* didn't end up sending her father a sweet tenor Fender uke. He was flabbergasted by the generosity and appreciative as hell, but after a few weeks, he didn't end up playing it all that often. So Lonna called her father and asked if he thought he could part with his Fender if it was going to a good home and staying in the family, so to speak. He was only too happy to make my dad's wish a reality. He shipped it down here to us, and I'll be going over to my parents' house this weekend to surprise my dad with his new uke. But I wanted to make a new video first, so here it is. It's tuned down half a step because why not? Sorry about the spotty sound quality in places - a new camera is on the list. Many, many thanks to Phil and many, many thanks to the uke's original owner for inspiring such selflessness.

Smoke In Our Lights Avett Bros ukulele cover ukeyermind 2010-01-21 | This is pretty bad, so I'm going to type a lot of words here to try to explain the badness away. Firstly, I made a New Year's Resolution to post at least 1 video per month. I've been playing the uke for the better part of a year now, and I've only posted 4 vids before this one. The reason I haven't posted more songs is because I don't know any more songs. I *do* have a couple of collaborations in the works, but those are taking freaking forever because I take freaking forever to learn my part. Secondly, this is a second take, so it's not at all polished up and pretty. I didn't know what I was going to play between the 3rd and 4th verse until I was playing it. I could probably practice for a few weeks and do a few dozen takes and get a better version of this song, but now we'll never know.Thirdly (I'm reaching now), this vid features the ukeyermind debut of the Bm chord. Try not to wince when I blow it the first time. I totally hit it like half the other times.Fourthly, I was looking at the chords to this song last night and told Lonna I was going to record it today. Her playing inspired (and inspires) me to play and she taught me anything I know about the ukulele at all, AND she's my #1 fan, but she had to admit I was going to have a hard time recording a song in a small time window since I didn't know all the lyrics or chords yet. So then I got the idea to just go low-rent and read the thing off the computer.I'm having fun. Are y'all having fun? I promise to try harder next time.
