Italians and Italian-Americans played a role on both sides of the American Civil War. Fresh from the Wars of Italian Unification, many officers came to the USA to fight for the North, who unsuccessfully wooed Garibaldi to take command several times. These men would raise regiments in places like New York, recruit recent Italian immigrants as well as others to fight for them. In the South Italians also fought, particularly those who had settled in and around New Orleans.

#British #BBC #historyWhat Did Canada Do in the American Civil War?History With Hilbert2024-09-28 | During the American Civil War, people of different nations flocked to both sides to see action before war's end. Canada played an important role in the American Civil War, anywhere from 33,000-55,000 Canadians fought for the Union, with several hundreds fighting for the Confederacy. Still ruled by the British, Canada had several fears of Northern Invasion during the war, their militia often being called up for suspected attack. Others in Canada were pro-Confederacy, helping to run Union blockades to supply weapons and money to the South.

The Viking Age, often dated 793-1066, is often portrayed in familiar ways in the history books. Small raids on island monasteries lead to bigger armies, expansion across the North Atlantic followed by Christianisation and Hastings tying it off with a nice bow.
But now, a new book takes a fresh look at this period, avoiding the stereotypes and the much trodden ground, and instead looks at the forgotten Vikings, the overlooked corners of the Viking Age. As Amberley describes it:
'Forgotten Vikings provides a chronological overview of the Viking Age (793–1066) and quite a lot of history either side of these arbitrary dates. Arbitrary? This book aims to explore the phenomenon of ‘the Vikings’ from new angles, forged out of recent academic breakthroughs largely unexplored in popular history books; the Viking Age viewed as a longer, discrete period from the sixth to the fifteenth centuries. Focusing on lesser-known aspects of the period, Alex Harvey taps into more obscure regions of the world these people visited, more obscure characters, and more obscure cultural elements. Examples include the evidence for viking activity on the Azores and Madeira, thirteenth-century Baltic raids, and the presence of viking armies in the Netherlands long before they became a threat to England. Offering unfamiliar perspectives, Forgotten Vikings will change the way you see these often misunderstood people, and unearth a forgotten history.'

#WW2 #History #netherlandsWhat was the Pagan Frisian Religion in the Early Middle Ages? | Archaeological EvidenceHistory With Hilbert2024-09-07 | The Frisians were a Germanic-speaking people living in the coastal area of the Netherlands and Germany. Before the conversion to Christianity, a long process beginning after the Frankish Conquest of Frisia, the Frisians worshipped a series of gods, likely closely related to the Norse gods known from Icelandic Mythology like Odin, Thor, Frey and others. In this lecture, I talk about what archaeological remains pertain to the paganism or heathenism in Frisia, their cemeteries and burial practices, relations to the Norse and Anglo-Saxon worlds.

#flags #Taiwan #historyWhat did Germans do in the American Civil War?History With Hilbert2024-08-24 | The American Civil War split the United States in two, heralding four years of vicious conflict between the Confederate and United States of America from 1861-65. This story has frequently been told in history books, in songs, and on the big screen, but an element of that story less-frequently acknowledged is the huge role played by non-Americans, immigrants and other groups that came and fought in the famous battles of Antietam, Shiloh, and Gettysburg, for both the North and the South. In this video I'll be looking at the story of German soldiers in the American Civil War, immigrants that spoke German and came from areas that would later be united under the Prussian and German Imperial banner. They would go on to fight largely for the North, though some, particularly Prussian adventurers also fought for the South. Germans, after Irish-born soldiers, made up the largest body of "foreign" troops in the Union Army. The American Civil War was also keenly followed by Prussian military strategists, ready for their own wars of conquest against the old powers of Europe in the years to come.

Giving the VOC and the Dutch an advantage over their Portuguese adversaries in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, allowing for trading opportunities and connections with the Ottoman Empire and other Sephardic Jewish communities across the world, and later became an important part of the fabric of life in the Netherlands.

In this lecture, Eliot looks at Norse conceptions of "Draugar" as well as a host of other beings that in some ways have returned from the dead. In particular how these ideas are presented in the Icelandic sagas of the thirteenth century and beyond, a time when the authors were Christian, though many of the stories were set in a time when pre-Christian or pagan beliefs were followed. So are these ideas of draugar genuine "pagan" ideas or are they Christian, or somewhere in between?

#spanish #language #historyWill France send NATO troops to Ukraine?History With Hilbert2024-02-28 | French President Emmanual Macron made a statement yesterday suggesting the possibility of "deployment" of NATO forces in Ukraine. Could this mean war with Russia if French forces will be sent to Ukraine? Clarifying his earlier statements following quick rebuttals of any suggestions of direct intervention by the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland among others, Macron elucidated his meaning noting that "deployment" might involve de-mining personnel, cyber-security systems, and production of munitions and arms in country.

#Ukraine #Russia #natoNew Immigrant Languages in European Cities? | Multiethnolects ExplainedHistory With Hilbert2024-02-24 | A Multiethnolect is defined as:
‘A linguistic style and/or variety (cf. the discussion below) that is part of linguistic practices of speakers of more than two different ethnic and (by consequence) linguistic backgrounds, and contains an unusually high number of features from more than one language, but has one clear base language, generally the dominant language of the society where the multiethnolect is in use.’
In short, multiethnolects have been appearing throughout many European cities that are host to migrants from a variety of linguistic backgrounds. In this video I want to find out more about the types of language varieties that evolve in such circumstances.

#interestingfacts #language #londonWhy Did a Bank BAN the Frisian Language?History With Hilbert2024-02-21 | The (West) Frisian language is the one of the most closely related languages to English, being spoken by Anglo-Saxons on the continent during the same time that others moved into Britain. Since then, Frisian has continued to be spoken in the North of the Netherlands and Germany. Today, Frisian (Frysk) is the second official language of the Netherlands alongside Dutch. However, this status is not always respected giving centuries of discrimination that has affected the way the language is perceived to this day. Earlier this month it was made public that the ING Bank banned their staff members from speaking Frisian. Instead, they were forced to speak Dutch or English, even when their customers wished to speak Frisian. This has caused an outcry in the province with many Frisians shocked by the bank's policy and have called it discrimination against Frisian-speakers.

Mags’ research interests are vast and heavily interdisciplinary, encompassing work in the fields of art history, archaeology, anthropology, classics, gender studies, and material history, originating in a primary interest in Ancient Greek archaeology and architectural history. Their current topics of research include concepts of gender (and sexuality) in Norse culture, as well as the lives of disabled people in the Viking Age. Mags’ methods prioritise separating Viking Age Norse culture from the Christianised worldviews of previous scholarship to access Norse self-image on their own terms. The archaeology of domestic life in the Viking Age, and cultural variation across Scandinavia also contribute greatly to their interests and research strategies, as does existing sociological theory on gender, sexuality, and class structures in Norse society.

#israel #palestine #yemenEarly-Medieval Frisian Mythology | 600-1300 AD (Lecture 2023)History With Hilbert2024-01-27 | The Frisians were a Germanic-speaking people living in the coastal area of the Netherlands and Germany. Before the conversion to Christianity, a long process beginning after the Frankish Conquest of Frisia, the Frisians worshipped a series of gods, likely closely related to the Norse gods known from Icelandic Mythology like Odin, Thor, Frey and others. Unlike the Eddas, there is no large collection of mythology from Frisia. But is there any Frisian Mythology remaining?

Sacred versus Profane. A clear and well entrenched dualism which rests at the heart of the study of past religions, inhabiting both the archaeological and historical approaches. The whole discipline is replete with dualistic modes of thought. Such a model pervades the majority of theory, from concept of “liminal space” to that of the Other-World model set out by stalwarts in the study in pre-Christian religion such as Jens Peter Schjødt, John Lindow and Simon Nygaard. This has certainly achieved much, but the issue arises as to how relevant these dualist modes of thought are to a polytheistic religion that actively defies such dogmatic and easy categorisations.
Indeed, many of these theories and models which one encounters within the field arise from a fundamental assumption at the heart of the field, a certain equivocation of religion with culture. That is religion is a subset of culture, a human creation, which exists separate from “nature” in what is typically labelled as the Nature – Culture divide. Or put simply, religion is separate from the material world that is “out there” and shared by all, as a product of a specific subset of humanity and their shared imagination. As such all manner of social constructivist and essentialist models can be applied onto religions of the past as they all fundamentally share an identical material world that exists “out there” and is objectively measurable. However, this divide is fundamentally a production of a modern Cartesian and Christian inspired system of thought which I seek to present as having no grounds to be applied to the pre-Christian past. In this presentation I will question the validity of studying and understanding Norsemen according to our own fundamental assumptions about the world and reality that are present not only the individual scholar but in the wider discipline as through its dualist approaches. That is, I present that a fundamental obstacle to understanding pre-Christian religion is of an ontological nature – the fundamental assumptions and classifications we make about the world.
I argue that a solution can be found in the recent Ontological Turn seen in anthropology espoused by key theorists such as Eduardo Viveiros de Castro and Martin Holbraad. Drawing off the non-dualism of Phillipe Descola, these approaches give primacy to their respective objects of study as a news means of theorising key assumptions or categories about the world. That is, one turns their object of study to supply an ontology for them as opposed to the typical assumptions of the scholar and their subject. As such I seek to present a turn towards a pagan ontology formulated off the source base that allows for new understandings and perspectives that differ on a fundamental level. Such would allow us to reconceptualise key elements and components such as sacrifice.
This to see different things within the pre-Christian past on its own terms, rather than the seeing things differently of reflexive approaches within the field.
