AUFSTIEG UND FALL DER STADT MAHAGONNY (The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny) is Kurt Weill´s and Bertolt Brecht's capitalist projection onto the biblical sinful cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Here, anything goes and everything is permitted – except having no money. Amidst the galloping moral bankruptcy without restraint or inhibitions, a hurricane is approaching the city...
Musically, MAHAGONNY is a fantastic mashup of various opera quotations and musical forms – chorales, Bach fugues, pop, Schrammel and marching band music, shanties, tarantellas, blues and even the Tristan chord.
Once again, director Benedikt von Peter demonstrates his unique approach to opera material (as he did previously in the AIDA and MATTHÄUS-PASSION productions). The entire theatre becomes the city of Mahagonny and the audience becomes part of a large entertainment machine that inexorably tips into an apocalyptic experiment.
