Many years ago I sold a t-shirt on tour that read, FEELINGS ARE NOT THE ENEMY. As you'll see it features an image of an upside-down-umbrella filled with rain. I cherish the shirt for the permission it gives. “All of your feelings are welcome here, no matter how stormy.” (My team just recently re-printed the shirt if you’d like to add it to your t-shirt collection) store.andreagibson.com/products/feelings-are-not-the-enemy-tshirt
My therapist Julie long ago taught me how to “have my feelings”. By “have my feelings” I mean give myself permission to experience my emotions, as big as I need to, rather than stifle them. “It’s our attempt to make our emotions smaller that gives them so much power and makes them stick around so long,” Julie said. The key was to focus... (Read the rest here) andreagibson.substack.com/p/the-one-feeling-i-didnt-allow

One night, around 2am when I couldn’t stop hacking, I Googled “how to stop coughing” and it autofilled to“how to stop crying.” The fact that millions of people search “how to stop crying” every day makes me want to wrap my arms around the whole world. Makes me feel relentlessly tender about what it is to be a human being. Can you imagine how different our...

I’ll give a bit of context. In July 2021 I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. A few months ago I found out I was having a recurrence. To help navigate this time with some humor and lightheartedness, I stopped calling it a recurrence and started calling it Cancer The Sequel. Today I am sharing a short Rotten Tomatoes Review of Cancer The Sequel. I found this to be a great way to shift my perspective on some of the harder scenes of my life. *** I give Cancer The Sequel a one star review. Mostly because I don’t like sequels. The original was fine. Why make another? Cancer The Sequel has the same incredible cast, but there are some moments of.... This time, however, I’m reading the poem to my Squirrel Friend as the poem begins with the line, “instead of depression, try calling it hibernation.” I’m a bit sad about anticipating not seeing my Squirrel Friend as often when the cold weather arrives, so the poem reminded me of her and her awesome self. I’ve been reading her poems almost daily lately. I’m not quite sure what she thinks of them. I googled, “Do squirrels like poetry?” and couldn’t find an answer. If you’re having a heavy day today, I hope this makes it a tiny bit lighter. (Read more) andreagibson.substack.com/p/do-squirrels-like-poetry
Something that has been reflected to me a lot this year is how much joy I’ve managed to find in this time, and how that’s difficult for people to wrap their minds around. I’m guessing it’s something that is far easier to wrap one’s heart around as it doesn’t make a lot of sense in my mind either. What I’m learning is that my experience is not uncommon, and though it may prove to be an experience not easily described with words, I hope to someday find the words to explain it. For now, here’s a little stream of thought (or stream-of-feel) piece I wrote. *** Every moment of the day I can hear my mother on the other side of the country praying for my happiness. She doesn’t tell me she’s praying. My hearing has improved. More days than not, her prayers are wholly answered, but I know how difficult it is for anyone to believe the light of my joy has not been dimmed by cancer. The only way I can explain it is to say, I stopped waiting for awe to find me. Now I find it.

I even printed those words on t-shirts to sell at performances all over the world. I rarely write a poem that doesn’t touch on that sentiment. “Feel what you gotta feel. Keep the Novocain out of your wisdom teeth. Every window begs to be open when the storm comes,” I wrote years ago. I still keep my windows open when my storms come, and my storms come all of the time. Thank goodness, because nothing feels more like a baptism. I rise up from that water anew. Anyone who knows me knows I’m unapologetically in love with pop music. Today’s newsletter tells the story of how Meg proposed to me by having a number of my musician friends learn, cover, and record on video one of “our songs.” It was the loveliest concert of my life. Over the next months I plan to share videos of our proposal songs from various artists,. and today I begin with “You Were Meant For Meg" by Jewel, covered by my friend Mary Lambert. If you’ve read my most recent book, “You Better Be Lightning” you know this is Meg’s karaoke song, but we are both pretty stellar at singing it at the very top of our skyscraper lungs.
Mary and I were scheduled to tour together a year ago when I was first diagnosed with cancer. Like all of the artists whose kindness has held me through this time, Mary was nothing but gracious and understanding. If you don’t follow her online already, I promise your life will be so much better if you do. She is both a brilliant artist and a compassionate thinker who is doing amazing work educating people about self-love. I’ve learned so much about loving myself through the insights she shares.

What I once didn’t notice, I notice all the time now––most especially the animals living in my yard and the meadow across the road. I can walk out my front door and see squirrels, baby bunnies and frogs hopping everywhere. There’s a very vocal old owl who lives in the tree outside of the window next to my writing desk. There are eagles teaching their babies to fly. Woodpeckers never stop making drums of the trees. Across the road, hundreds of prairie dogs stand up on their hind legs gossiping all day long with their prairie dog neighbors. Commonly, snakes as long as the width of a road cross my path. The other day I woke up to this section of our fence missing near our compost bin, and yep––that’s the handiwork of an actual bear.... I think it’s wonderful how much we speak about the importance of ‘self-love’ these days, but I rarely hear people discuss how it feels to truly love oneself. What is it like? How does it feel in the mind, in the spirit, in the chest and in the elbows? Does it change our worldview and our opinions of others? Of traffic, or the DMV? How do feelings of genuine self-love differ from pride? Ego? Arrogance? Rightness? Ideas of being better than or more than someone else? For a long time I’ve wanted to hear people express how loving oneself actually feels to them. Because of that, I took some time to write out how it feels to me, hoping it will inspire others to share their experience: Read more here: andreagibson.substack.com/p/what-does-self-love-feel-like

As many of you know, in July 2021 I was diagnosed with cancer. As someone who had been a severe hypochondriac since childhood, and as an adult whose life was severely impacted by a panic and anxiety disorder, I had the exact opposite reaction to the news than I might have expected. A new peace found me. I felt like I was sitting in a warm bath of love. My blood pressure, which had been high for years as a result of anxiety––returned to normal. My mind, which typically raced like an auctioneer selling horror stories, retired. All of this happened as a direct result of being told I had a very serious diagnosis. I’m writing today to share some of why. Read more... andreagibson.substack.com/p/on-accepting-what-is
Years ago I learned something changed my perspective on growing:
A butterfly trying to find its way out of a cocoon can be difficult to watch because it looks like an immense struggle. It’s common for people to try to peel back the layers of the cocoon to help the butterfly into the air. But a butterfly’s lifespan can be greatly shortened if the exit from the cocoon isn’t its own doing. The butterfly’s struggle is necessary to its chances of thriving.
As I’ve been quite serious on here as of late, it feels like a good day to add some easy joy with this very precious video of my squirrel friend who has been visiting me everyday for months now. My squirrel friend is disabled and likely has a more difficult time collecting her own food than the rest of her companions. She’s fantastic at climbing trees because she can grip the bark with her claws, but has a difficult time walking on the ground. I’ve been in touch with a local wild animal rescue and they believe she has a head injury from a fall. Read more... andreagibson.substack.com/p/i-made-a-new-friend-a-squirrel
You may recall me sharing a fairly goofy self-interview with you in the past. Today I’m doubling down on the goofy as I continue my ongoing commitment to adding some light to my heartedness. If that means I will forever be represented by the words in today’s newsletter, I will make comedic peace with that. A few years ago I read that humor is commonly used as trauma therapy. While that’s obviously not gonna be a great route for everyone, when it helps me– it REALLY REALLY helps. I write a newsletter called, “Things That Don’t Suck”, but I don’t just write about obviously unsucky things, like puppies and pancakes.
