In this video, we’re taking you around our home in central Portugal and showing you what we bought, what we changed, what we added, and what we still plan to do.

We bought the original property five years ago. Since then, we’ve transformed the upstairs yard into an outdoor dining room, renovated an old barn into an outdoor lounge, changed the pool area, added a new outdoor kitchen, bought extra land for parking, and taken on another large piece of land that may eventually become home to chickens, vegetables and a few more projects than we probably need.

Inside, the house has changed visually too, so we’ve included a before-and-after montage showing how different it looks today.

This isn’t a luxury renovation story. It’s the story of how a perfectly liveable house gradually became our home, and how the biggest changes were often about changing the way we use the space rather than rebuilding the house itself.

Our Portuguese Town Completely Changes in Summer

Change Of Plan 2026-09-06 | Living in Portugal, rural Portugal, Portuguese village life and what summer is really like in a small Portuguese town. In this video, we show how summer completely changes the rhythm of life in Mortágua, Central Portugal, from early mornings and village festas to returning emigrants, neighbour-grown produce, summer fires and the less glamorous side of country living.

This is not a holiday version of Portugal. It is everyday life.

In summer, our town feels different. Mornings start earlier before the heat arrives, festas fill the evenings, families return from France, Switzerland, Luxembourg and beyond, and neighbours arrive with bags of tomatoes, figs, peppers and anything else their gardens have produced in alarming quantities.

There are also the realities that rarely make the postcards: wildfire risk, ants, mice, insects and learning that rural Portugal comes with its own seasonal battles.

And this year, something changed for us too.

Our break from YouTube was never planned. Life got busy, the cameras were put down and, strangely, when we had the chance to start filming again… we didn’t particularly want to.

That gave us some time to think.

Somewhere along the way, Change of Plan had become almost entirely about moving to Portugal. Portugal is a huge part of our story and it isn’t going anywhere, but moving countries was never really the whole point.

The bigger story was changing our lives.

Leaving secure careers. Questioning traditional retirement. Living on less. Looking for more freedom. Building a different life and discovering what happens once the enormous change you dreamed about simply becomes everyday life.

The World Rally Championship came to our little Portuguese town 🇵🇹

This week Gary heads to Mortágua to experience the atmosphere, the noise, the dust, and the excitement as the WRC rolled into Central Portugal. For a normally quiet part of the country, seeing thousands of people, rally cars flying through the forest stages, and flags from all over the world was something really special.
Gary also chats with Trevor, a British rally driver who now lives here in our town, about what makes the Rally de Portugal so iconic and why events like this mean so much to places like Mortágua.
It’s one of those moments that reminds us why we love living in Portugal. Small towns here can suddenly become the centre of the world for a weekend.

Portos Real Gems Revealed: What Travellers Miss Every Single Time

Change Of Plan 2026-03-15 | Porto is one of our favourite cities in Portugal, and in this video we spend 48 hours exploring the places we always return to when we visit.

This isn’t a typical tourist guide. Instead, we’re sharing the places we genuinely enjoy, the spots we keep going back to, and a couple of famous locations that we think are not really worth the hype.

We start across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, exploring the lively Mercado Beira-Rio food court before taking the cable car up towards the Dom Luís I Bridge for one of the best views of Porto.
Back in the city, we wander along Rua de Santa Catarina, one of Porto’s most famous streets for shopping and architecture, and Gary visits a couple of his favourite photography gear shops. We also stop by the Time Out Market Porto, while Shelley heads to one of her favourite markets in the city, Mercado do Bolhão.

Porto is full of beautiful churches and historic buildings, so we take a look at the striking Igreja do Carmo and Carmelitas, before discovering a unique lunch spot inside another historic church building at Capela Incomum.
The day finishes at one of our favourite restaurants with a view, Vinum, overlooking the Douro and Porto’s skyline at night.

We also explore the traditional fishing village of Afurada, visit the impressive Church of São Lourenço, wander through the beautiful Rua das Flores with its independent shops and architecture, and Gary checks out Capela das Almas along the way.

And of course, no visit to Porto is complete without pastel de nata, a walk across the Dom Luís I Bridge at sunset, and an unexpected discovery… proper fish and chips in Porto.

Our Villages Storm Created a Disaster Downstream

We filmed in our village and at the dam to show how quickly water levels are rising and how it all connects. The River Mondego has already burst its banks in parts of Coimbra, and more rain is forecast.

Portugal Approves New Immigration Law With Chega’s Support * DETAILS BELOW #PortugalImmigration

Change Of Plan 2025-10-02 | Main changes and provisions on the Portugal IMMIGRATION Bill

Family reunification stricter rules with some exceptions
The general rule remains: an immigrant must hold two years of valid legal residence before applying to reunify family members.
But there are some exceptions or relaxations:
Spouses who cohabited with the applicant for at least 18 months before immigration may qualify with a shorter threshold.
Children under 18 or dependants with disabilities can sometimes join regardless of the applicant’s full residence period.
The initial permit granted under family reunification is for 15 months.
The law also prohibits counting social welfare benefits toward the income threshold when assessing household income for residence renewals.

Tightening of visa / residence permit eligibility
The “job-seeker visa” or work-visa for non-EU foreigners is restricted: only highly qualified individuals will be eligible under the new rules.
There is an increased emphasis on proof of housing (safe and legal, meeting health and safety standards) as part of the eligibility requirements.

Citizenship / naturalisation reforms (or proposals under pending debate)
While the nationality law changes were not all finalised at vote time, many of the reforms had been proposed earlier and are expected to be integrated.
The planned changes include:
Doubling the required legal residence period for most non-EU nationals from 5 to 10 years.
A shorter period (e.g. 7 years) for applicants from Portuguese-speaking countries (CPLP).

Stronger integration requirements: knowledge of Portuguese language, culture, rights and duties, alignment with constitutional values.

Potential revocation of naturalised citizenship in serious criminal cases under certain conditions.

Administrative, bilateral, and procedural changes
The law allows for bilateral agreements with third countries to speed up visa issuance and residence permit procedures.
More discretion is introduced: in “exceptional, duly substantiated cases,” the residence period requirement for family reunification may be waived or reduced by a government minister, considering family ties and integration.

The amendments were in part a response to a previous version being rejected by the Constitutional Court, especially for being too harsh on family reunification rights.
