Some say Nitrates in Tap water are associated with cancers. You may just want to remove the minerals to soften the water. We just improved the tap water to take out chlorine, fluoride, calcium, nitrates etc. Some say nitrates can cause cancer when the levels exceed 10mg/l, according to this report: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6068531
Our tap water was 22mpg/L and I believe even higher a few weeks earlier)
Personally I am not so sure now as other doctors say nitrates/nitrites are beneficial in generating nitrous oxide which dilates the blood vessels, aiding blood flow and reducing cardiovascular problems. A somewhat mixed picture but removing the calcium was another benefit for me in a very hard water area. My heart valve was calcified so it seemed sensible.
Do you have discolouration of tap water? Maybe you notice on a deep bath. I was worried what I was drinking so tested it with these test strips:

There are other research papers (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29435982/) saying nitrates over 4 mg/l can lead to a “significant increase in the chances of colon cancer”, and yet my water at first appeared to have 100 mg/l of nitrate!! I think I should have stopped looking after 30 seconds, but when the water company tested my water it was 22 mg/l! Still very worrying for cancer risk where over 4mg/l is said to be an increased risk!
This reverse osmosis water filter reduces it to negligible safe levels.
