As someone who worked in the financial industry for over 4 years I learned that society does not have your best intentions in mind for your finances. This is WHY we are never taught financial education. However, by the age of 23, I managed to quit my job with 2 years of expenses saved in cash and over a year's salary invested in the stock market. How did I achieve this, earning no more than $22 an hour? I lay out the blueprint that led me to these accomplishments and share some unpopular advice that is worth your time (timestamped for your convenience).
Society, driven by consumerism, bombards us with enticing ads that fuel the desire to spend money mindlessly. If you are not a consumer of goods, then the economy will crumble. The illusion of always needing something new keeps us trapped in a cycle of overspending. But to break free from this vicious cycle, the key is to "Pay Yourself First." Instead of the traditional approach of saving what's left after expenses, consider setting aside what you can of your paycheck before spending a dime. This practice, coupled with the discipline to leave that money untouched, is the initial step toward financial independence. It may not seem like much at first, but trust me, it adds up, and the benefits will become evident sooner than you think.

Most of us trade our time for money, making us easily replaceable and unmarketable. Not to mention AI is about to be in the job hunt as well. To break free from this trap, we must focus on developing marketable skills. The question is, how do we acquire these skills? While society tends to emphasize a college education, the risk of leaving college with massive student debt and no guaranteed job makes it a risky proposition. Instead, explore alternative avenues like community colleges, online education platforms like YouTube, or trade schools. Ultimately, the ideal situation is to acquire skills that enable you to become your own boss, breaking free from being undervalued and underpaid.
Now, let's talk about making money work for you. Society may encourage saving money, but holding it in cash isn't the best strategy. Banks loan out your money without offering significant interest, and as inflation takes its toll, the purchasing power of your dollar decreases over time. Instead, consider investing in yourself—specific education, life experiences through travel, or building a business. Prioritize this step once you've built up a comfortable savings and seen your income grow. The goal isn't just amassing wealth; it's enjoying the life you desire, to have that financial independence.
