The original Wat Phra Phai Luang predates the founding of the Thai Kingdom of Sukhothai. It was likely built during the reign of Jayavarman VII and the evidence can be seen in the three Khmer prangs (only one remaining) at the north of the site. Wat Phra Phai Luang is located on a vast area in the so-called northern part of the historic city of Sukhothai.
