It is owned and maintained by the National Trust for Scotland, and is adjacent to the Trust's property at Killiecrankie.The name Linn of Tummel comes from the Scots Gaelic and means "pool of tumbling stream". The name comes from the fact that the River Tummel used to drop down over a fall to meet the River Garry; however, in 1950 the fall ceased when a new hydro-electric plant raised the level of both rivers and created Loch Faskally. Did You Know This Bridge Was Built in 1814? Desmond Roams 2026-02-13 | Craigellachie Bridge is a cast iron arch bridge across the River Spey at Craigellachie, near to the village of Aberlour in Moray, Scotland. It was designed by the renowned civil engineer Thomas Telford and built from 1812 to 1814. It is a Category A listed structure.The bridge has a single span of approximately 46 metres and was revolutionary for its time, in that it used an extremely slender arch which was not possible using traditional masonry construction. The ironwork was cast at the Plas Kynaston iron foundry in Denbighshire by William Hazledine, who cast a number of Telford bridges. The ironwork was transported from the foundry through the Ellesmere Canal and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct then by sea to Speymouth, where it was loaded onto wagons and taken to the site. Testing in the 1960s revealed that the cast-iron had an unusually high tensile strength. This was probably specified by Telford because, unlike in traditional masonry arch bridges, some sections of the arch are not in compression under loading.At each end of the structure there are two 15 m high masonry mock-medieval towers, featuring arrow slits and miniature crenelated battlements.The bridge was in regular use until 1963, when it was closed for a major refurbishment. A plaque records the completion of this work in 1964. The side railings and spandrel members were replaced with new ironwork fabricated to match the originals. A 14 ton restriction was placed on the bridge at this point. This, along with the fact that the road to the north of the bridge takes a sharp right-angled turn to avoid a rock face, made it unsuitable for modern vehicles. Despite this, it carried foot and vehicle traffic across the River Spey until 1972, when its function was replaced by a reinforced concrete beam bridge which opened in 1970 and carries the A941 road today. Telford's bridge remains in good condition, and is still open to pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge has been given Category A listed status by Historic Scotland and has been designated a civil engineering landmark by the Institution of Civil Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers.In 1994, it hosted a parade upon the amalgamation of The Gordon Highlanders and The Queen's Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Cameron's) to form The Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Cameron's). Exploring the Mysterious Lochindorb Castle! Desmond Roams 2026-02-09 | Exploring the Mysterious Lochindorb Castle!.Lochindorb is a freshwater loch north of Grantown on Spey This loch is home to the ruins of Lochindorb Castle, a former stronghold of the Clan Comyn and is built on what now is said to be an artificially created island.Lochindorb is home to an array of wildlife and is a popular fishing and bird watching spot. The loch was traditionally a game loch with a large native brown trout population however there has been a dramatic decrease in numbers since the illegal introduction of pike to the loch.Lochindorb Castle is located on the bleak Dava Moor south of Nairn and Forres on the way to Grantown-on-Spey and Aviemore, in the south-eastern heart of the Scottish Highlands. It sits on a partly man-made island in this remote loch, 6.5 miles north-west of Grantown-on-Spey and is not accessible by public transport, so you will need a car or bike to get here - and then of course a boat if you want to go across! The best time to visit is when the heather is in bloom and the moor is a carpet of purple.The castle has certainly had its fair share of drama. Dating back to the 13th century, it was originally held by the Comyns, but later occupied by the English and was visited by Edward I in 1303 when he stayed here for 9 days, hunting out on the moor. Later it was used as a prison and also a garrison for English troops. At the end of the 14th century, it was gifted by Robert II to his third son, the notorious Wolf of Badenoch, Alexander Stewart, who rampaged around quite a bit of the local area. Lochindorb was said to be his favourite haunt.When the Scottish Privy Council instructed the Thane of Cawdor to dismantle Lochindorb after it had been forfeited by the Earl of Moray in around 1455, the huge iron yett was transported to Cawdor Castle and can now be seen in the bowels of the building.Although now in ruins, the castle was still in fairly good condition up until the end of the 18th century when its four 7-metre high round towers were intact. The main quadrangular courtyard is 48 x 38 metres in dimensions and is enclosed by a 2-metre thick wall which stands 6 metres high. A later extension to the south was made probably to give the island extra protection from assault. Apparently it was bought by the Cawdor Campbells in the 1970s.
What Makes Hopeman Village So Special? Desmond Roams 2026-02-06 | What Makes Hopeman Village So Special?Hopeman is a village on the north coast of Moray, two miles east of Burghead. From the road between them, you only glimpse the inland side of the village. Hopeman itself comes with an attractive and complex harbour and two beaches.Hopeman was established as a planned village originally called "Newtown of Hopeman" in 1805 by the local landowner, William Young of Inverugie. He had opened quarries at Greenbrae and Clashach to the east of the site of the village to extract the golden coloured sandstone found here, and he needed somewhere to house the quarrymen and their families.The large sandy beaches are split by the man-made harbour. The West Beach is the smaller. The East Beach is surrounded by large, grassy sand dunes, and has colourful beach huts and large rocky areas with excellent rockpools. Further to the east is a smaller hidden beach with stones and large rock formations.There are quite a few birds to be found on the beach, such as the herring gull, the great black-backed gull, the black-headed gull, the curlew and the oystercatcher. The areas of gorse heathland surrounding the eastern beaches are home to the whitethroat, the robin and the yellowhammer.Hopeman Harbour is in between the East and West Beaches. It is small and now mainly houses pleasure vessels. We Stumbled Upon This Incredible Castle in the Scottish Highlands Desmond Roams 2026-01-30 | We Stumbled Upon This Incredible Castle in the Scottish HighlandsCastle Roy is a 12th century fortress set on a small glacial mound to the north of the village of Nethy Bridge, and is reported to be the oldest masonry fortification in Scotland. It has been associated with the clans of Mar, Comyn, Stewart and Grant, with links to the Red Comyn and the Wolf of Badenoch. In 1560 the area came under the fiefdom of Clan Grant who remain the feudal clan of this region today.With its walls still standing 25 feet high, the castle is a simple, irregular four-sided stronghold which has remained unaltered over the centuries. Carbon dating of 1190-1220 indicates that it is amongst the oldest masonry fortifications in ScotlandThe main architectural features are a tower on the north-western corner which has the only remaining window lintel. The main entrance archway is in the centre of the north wall, with a small entrance next to the tower on the west wall. The west wall also contains the Garderobe, a two-story latrine facility for the garrison.Strategically located in Strathspey Castle Roy has changed hands many times through marriage and alliances. Alexander II granted the Lordship of Abernethy to James Earl of Mar in 1226. James was succeeded by his brother Duncan who ruled until 1244. To be succeeded by William who married into the powerful Comyn family. Comyn power was crushed in 1306 by Robert the Bruce.Various factors held sway in the area with the fiefdom often returning to the Crown. In 1381 the title was granted to Alexander Stewart by King Robert. Again, oft reverting to the Crown until 1560, when Queen Mary made her half-brother, James Stewart, the first Earl of Moray. Subsequently, he rented the area to the Grants.In 1592 John Grant gained the charter to the Lordship of Abernethy. This charter was confirmed by James VI in 1609.Castle Roy would have been built towards the end of the Norman colonisation of Scotland. It is unique because it remains unaltered. The walls enclose a courtyard 80ft by 53ft (24m x 16m) and are constructed of glacial rubble rocks collected locally. Standing 25ft (7.6m) high and 7ft (2.1m) thick, the lime mortar remains very strong after 800 years.The size indicates a staging post, a base for the local area Factor and a resting point for hunting forays into the Abernethy Forest. Its four thick stone walls protected various timber buildings inside. These would have included the Clan Chief’s dwelling, possessions, food, animals, soldiers and servants.Architectural evidence in the walls in the garderobe area show the Chieftain’s latrine, while above, internal passages led to two other latrines. There is a corner tower which had two floors of which the window opening remains. The wild land is home to golden eagles, mountain hares and red deer.Autumn and winter are the best times to see deer, when they come down from the hills to find shelter and feed on bark and young saplings. In the past, wolves helped to keep the delicate balance between deer and trees. Now we fence some areas of forest to keep the deer out, and control their numbers so both trees and deer stay healthy.Often described as the most beautiful glen in Scotland, Glen Affric contains the third largest area of ancient Caledonian pinewoods in Scotland, as well as lochs, moorland and mountains. The area is a Caledonian Forest Reserve, a national scenic area and a national nature reserve, as well as holding several other conservation designations.Scots pine trees first colonised the area after the last Ice Age, 10,000 to 8,000 years ago. Currently the oldest trees in the area are the gnarled "granny" pines that are the survivors of generations of felling. Although felling ceased many years ago, regrowth was hampered by unnaturally high populations of sheep and deer, and in the early 1950s the Forestry Commission found that very few of the remaining pines were less than 100 years old. Initially the Commission, reforested the area with non-native species such as Sitka spruce and lodgepole pine, as well as Scots pine from local seed stocks. Since the 1980s management priorities have changed, and non-native conifers have been felled and removed from the glen, alongside the removal of other non-native trees such as rhododendron. Glen Affric, was part of the lands of the Clan Chisholm and the Clan Fraser of Lovat from the 15th to the mid 19th centuries. By the early 15th century, Lord Lovat had passed the lands to his son Thomas who in turn passed it on to his son, William. Thomas Chisholm, Laird of Strathglass, was imprisoned for being a Catholic. By the 18th century, the title deeds of Glen Affric had been a source of feuding, with the Battle of Glen Affric taking place in 1721Most of the glen was bought by the Forestry Commission in 1951. The glen is part of the Affric/Beauly hydroelectric scheme, constructed by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. Loch Mullardoch, in the neighbouring Glen Cannich, is also dammed.The Battle of Glen Affric took place in 1721 It was fought between Government backed forces of the Clan Ross against rebel the forces of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies the Clan Macrae. In 1720 two members of the Clan Ross - William Ross, 6th of Easter Fearn (ex-Provost of Tain) and his brother Robert Ross (Baillie of Tain) - had been appointed factors on the estates of Mackenzie of Seaforth, Chisholm and Glenmoriston. The following year, in 1721, they went on an expedition to collect rents on these estates. The Rosses set off from Inverness with thirty armed men, picking up a further fifty armed men from Bernera Barracks. The Murchison family being a sept of the Clan Mackenzie, Colonel Donald Murchison was Mackenzie of Seaforth's factor who had been collecting rents and sending them to his master in France. While on their journey to Mackenzie of Seaforth's lands in Kintail, the Rosses who were attended by just a small company of soldiers met three hundred men of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies the Clan Macrae in Glen Affric. William Ross's son Walter Ross and also his nephew William Ross were also wounded. Realizing that further resistance was useless William Ross met Colonel Murchison between the lines and discussion took place.
