Unlike The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway which has a very good amount of footage to work with when I recreated it, this is not the case with the original Thick As A Brick tour. There is limited footage (although there is MORE than enough footage to recreate an entire show but it is being withheld but that's another story for another time)to work with this time and rather than fill in many, many minutes of missing footage with creative use of photos, etc., I decided the best way to present this footage as one continuous concert was to produce it as a concert documentary with commentary from Ian Anderson, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond, & Martin Barre. They tell us many interesting stories on how this legendary album was made as the concert plays out.Why it took 44 years to present this remarkable, legendary show in concert as a documentary is beyond us. Now, a word or two about the quality of this show. As it is from a pre-broadcast source, there is a timecode at the bottom of the screen throughout, it's translucent so not too intrusive but it is there. The filming is a pro-shot but there only seem to be 2 cameras and the editing isn't the best although there are some split screen effects and basic editing.The actual quality of the picture is very good but not perfect - I suspect this was originally shot in NTSC but the only available version is PAL so there is some slight haziness in the picture, but I'd rate it a good A even if not reaching A+ standard. Likewise, the sound is not perfect but much better than any of the circulating FM recordings.Now, to the content of the discs - some interesting stuff! It was the longest schedule of any of their tours as well as having the longest (and most variable) setlist. It ran from November 1975 to September 1976, all across Europe and North America. The start of the tour coincided with the worldwide release of the Evil Woman single in late 1975, which was ELO's first worldwide hit reaching the top ten in many countries in which it was released, including both the UK and USA. It was this tour that helped move ELO up a level to superstar status and they began regularly being the headline act, rather than the supporting act.

The album had not yet been released in America, Steve Hackett was still recovering from a bad hand injury which made playing the guitar very difficult for him and, most of all, the band were facing the formidable prospect of performing over ninety minutes of brand new material which they had never played on stage before. And that was only on the surface. A fierce battle was raging in Peter Gabriel’s mind, the difficult events surrounding the birth of his first daughter and the creation of the celebrated double album having taken their toll on him. With the band about to undertake their most demanding world tour to date, he was contemplating leaving Genesis for good. In Cleveland, Ohio, only a few gigs into the tour, Peter Gabriel confided in manager Tony Smith that he would be quitting the band after the tour. The singer then proceeded to break the news to his band colleagues and a huge wave of disbelief and despondency engulfed the Genesis camp in an instant. The other band members, especially his old school friend Tony Banks, tried desperately to persuade Peter to change his mind, but to no avail. With this heavy atmosphere, it is hardly surprising that the first weeks spent promoting the new album turned out to be a painful experience for all concerned. However, when the band resumed the North American tour after the Christmas holiday, the tension had begun to lift a little. With the initial shock of Gabriel’s decision beginning to subside, Genesis, being the consummate perfectionists that they always were, returned to the ‘Lamb’ tour with fierce determination. By now, the album had become a more familiar set piece for both band and audience, and each performance improved in confidence and power. The ‘Lamb’ show, although a controversial one in shape and form, became an instant classic. While the band members themselves mostly disagree with that assessment, insisting that something always went wrong during the shows or that some of the songs were not best suited to being performed live, for the fans it was nothing less than a total triumph. Over three decades after the event, new live recordings of ‘Lamb’ shows are still highly sought after by Genesis fans the world over.

There is another good sounding show from 1972 recorded at Norfolk Virginia but I decided to go with this one because this is a livelier performance whereas the Norfolk one is a but dull and the crowd doesn't sound too enthusiastic as opposed to this show where the crowd is rocking and the band is at the top of their game. A MUST HAVE for any collector.This is a very good sounding recording considering it's from the audience 43 years ago.! The BBC recorded the show on the Island Record mobile studio and a week later (1st July 1978) broadcast some of the show in quadraphonic on the fifth aniversary of Alan Freeman's "Saturday Afternoon Show" between 4:00pm and 5:30pm. The BBC master of this initial broadcast was a 90 minute edit of the show held on quad reel-to-reel tape, though no subsequent broadcast has been in quadraphonic sound. The first rebroadcast was on Tommy Vance's hugely popular "Friday Rock Show" show (ironically the replacement for Alan Freeman's program) not long after the Rock Show's launch (29th December 1978, 10:30pm to midnight). Now, a word or two about the quality of this show. As it is from a pre-broadcast source, there is a timecode at the bottom of the screen throughout, it's translucent so not too intrusive but it is there. The filming is a pro-shot but there only seem to be 2 cameras and the editing isn't the best although there are some split screen effects and basic editing.The actual quality of the picture is very good but not perfect - I suspect this was originally shot in NTSC but the only available version is PAL so there is some slight haziness in the picture, but I'd rate it a good A even if not reaching A+ standard. Likewise, the sound is not perfect but much better than any of the circulating FM recordings.Now, to the content of the discs - some interesting stuff! For years a good portion of the first part was missing in Gabriel-era videos but for this show I reconstructed it using footage from other venues during the same tour and I hope that I've captured the look and feel of what an entire Cinema Show performance must've looked like.Similar to what we did with the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and with 2014 being the 40th anniversary of Selling England By The Pound we've patched all the missing parts of the remastered version of the Montreal 1974 footage with scenes from short amateur & pro-shot video clips of shows filmed in other parts of the world to make the very first entire Selling England by the Pound concert with all songs in full.
