The song is based on the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak's famous "Largo" theme from his Symphony No. 9 (From the New World), Op. 95. His symphony was composed while he was in America and was first performed by the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall on December 16, 1893. It has been said that Dvorak's themes in his symphony were inspired by American folk melodies, especially Afro-American or American Indian. The lyrics for "Going Home" was written by one of Dvorak's pupils, William Arms Fisher (1861-1948), who adapted and arranged the Largo theme and added his own words in "the form of a Negro spiritual." This song especially became known as a spiritual after the death of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1940s. This is part of what Fisher wrote in the published sheet music of his song, "Going Home" (Oliver Ditson Company): "The Largo, with its haunting English horn solo, is the outpouring of Dvorak's own home-longing, with something of the loneliness of far-off prairie horizons, the faint memory of the red-man's bygone days, and a sense of the tragedy of the black-man as it sings in his "spirituals." Deeper still it is a moving expression of that nostalgia of the soul all human beings feel. In Roquemaure at the end of the year 1843, the church organ was recently renovated. To celebrate the event, the parish priest asked Cappeau, native from this town, to write a Christmas poem. Soon after, Adam wrote the music. The song was premiered in Roquemaure in 1847.

It is a Christian hymn written in 1865 by Lina Sandell several years after she had witnessed the tragic drowning death of her father. In the U.S. it is known as "Day by Day (and with Each Passing Moment)". The hymn of assurance is used in American congregational singing. The hymn's Swedish name is "Blott en dag", its first three words in Swedish. The words mean "just one day" or "just another day". In Sweden and Finland, it is popular at funerals. Lina Sandell was a prolific Swedish hymn writer. Two of her hymns, "Day by Day" and "Children of the Heavenly Father" are widely known in the U.S. The original and most popular English translation of the hymn is by Andrew L. Skoog, a Swedish immigrant to the U.S. "Day by Day" started appearing in American hymnals in the latter half of the 1920s, and its popularity has increased since then. The hymn's tune was composed in 1872 by Oscar Ahnfelt.

He was an English sailor, in the Royal Navy for a period, and later a captain of slave ships. Newton started his career at sea at a young age, and worked on slave ships in the slave trade for several years. After experiencing a period of Christian conversion Newton eventually renounced his trade and became a prominent supporter of abolitionism, living to see Britain's abolition of the African slave trade in 1807. "Amazing Grace" was written to illustrate a sermon on New Year's Day of 1773. It is unknown if there was any music accompanying the verses; it may have simply been chanted by the congregation.
