This was the result of dense smoke from the many wild fires to the North drifting over the Bay Area and beyond. As the day went on, the skies became darker. At midday, it felt like mid evening. Street lamps turned on and motorists had to use their headlights. I have never seen it this bad. As many commented, it was apocalyptic!I drove around Oakland, the old Navy base at Alameda, and the Port of Oakland. The Navy base had an eerie atmosphere and looked as if it was straight out of a horror movie. The USS Hornet and other ships looked like ghosts in the night. Iguanas and lizards are part of the trip a well as beautiful flowers that bloom all year long. Martinique also boasts quite a number of beautiful churches, many dating to the 17th century. One particularity of these churches is that the woodwork beneath the roofs are in the shape of upside down ship hulls, as they were built by naval carpenters. The Rocky fire started on July 29th 2015 near Lower Lake, CA and burned 69,438 acres. The Jerusalem fire started on August 9th and burned over 25,000 acres. The two fires eventually combined in one giant area and destroyed 52 residences.Crews from PG&E and other agencies can be seen working on replacing burned-out electric poles and re-installing electrical lines.
