Sage-grouse Lek- Peak Breeding Season Alan K. 2016-02-17 | A view of one of the mating centers of a greater sage-grouse lek in Fremont County, Wyoming. Leks are sometimes thought of as the "singles bars" of the animal kingdom. Each male stakes out a small display territory, and females come through and select their mate. During the peak in breeding, the number of females can exceed the number of males, and typically the top males get most of the attention. This creates one or more "mating centers" on the lek where females congregate, waiting for their chance to mate with the top guy.

Wildcat Canyon owlets take their leave Alan K. 2020-06-11 | Two fledgling Great Horned Owls seen in Wildcat Canyon Regional Park. They are becoming stronger fliers, although the crashing sounds I would hear this evening suggest they still need to work on their landing skills. As one should always do, this is filmed at a great distance so as not to disturb the birds (more than 900mm equivalent).

When females are around, males are typically busy courting, but if there is a break in the action, they will rest, preen, and sometimes grab a quick bite to eat! How they eat when their esophagus is inflated like a balloon we still don't know. He appears to be eating short forbs growing between the grass. He was banded as part of research projects through the University of California Davis.

Sage-grouse Lek Multiple Mating Events Alan K. 2014-06-02 | Peak breeding season at a Greater Sage-grouse lek in Fremont County, Wyoming. This was a focal lek for the Patricelli Lab sage-grouse research-- audio was me relaying data via radio to hill observers who were tallying mating events and id-ing birds. At least two somewhat unusual events- 1) a failed copulation at 00:34- male mounted female but clearly did not successfully copulate with her. Note much reduced female fluttering afterwards.2) Female aggression to a male mating with another female. (00:58). Although the copulation event was successful, it appears that a second female attempts to interrupt it.Shot with a Canon 60D- apologies for the shoddy camera work.
