But how about leather? Yep, with the addition of a drag knife to your tool arsenal you can cut leather on your CNC.
In this session we’ll look at what a drag knife is, how to create a drag knife toolpath for your project, how to secure leather to the spoilboard of your machine and what parameters are used on the CNC router to make this work. Master a drag knife and you’ll also be able to cut vinyl, cardboard…nearly anything you can cut with a utility knife.

Well Todd and the team were asked do exactly that… and “that” became Victor!
In this session Todd will touch on some of the interesting solutions that were needed to make this project come together, from setting up the file, modeling, reassembling, slicing and much more. Of course this couldn’t have happened without Aspire and the Vectric team pitching in and bringing Victor to life!
Vectric on Instagram: instagram.com/vectricltdVCarved Patterns with Randy | Vectric Worldwide UGM 2023Vectric Ltd2023-10-05 | Although the VCarve toolpath is commonly used for text carving, it’s also an excellent choice for other 2D designs since it’s one of the easiest ways to create unique and attractive CNC carvings.
In this session, I’ll show you how to create a v-carved vector design that simulates the hand-carving technique known as Chip Carving. I’ll show you how to use the editing, alignment, offset, and layout tools to create a complex chip carving design from just a few vectors.
My design technique is also very forgiving - as long as you follow a few simple guidelines, it’s hard to create a bad design. I’ll cover these guidelines in the session and show you how to use the 3D preview and toolpaths to verify the quality of your design. The design process and machining time are also relatively quick and often require only one bit change.

We don’t actually look back on them. There was a time in the past where we would regularly print our photographs and file them away in a photo album and the most special ones would be displayed in the home within a frame. In this project Beki reinvents this concept of displaying special memories with the help of Vectric software.
Vectric on Twitter: twitter.com/VectricMaking a Toddler Stand | In The Labs with Vectric | Vectric FREE CNC ProjectsVectric Ltd2023-08-23 | Cory from Avid CNC designed and carved this beekeeper style toddler tower for his little one and has kindly shared this with us to share with all of you! Beki loved the design so much she cut one herself in the Vectric labs and shows you how you can make one too!
Toddler stands are designed to help kids learn and explore. Inspired by the Montessori methods of teaching they are the perfect way to have little ones join in on all of your kitchen activities at your height and in a safe manner.
The toddler stand was cut in sheet plywood using ¼” end mills and is formed of 8 parts that easily slot together. There are 2 height options in the design which increases the usability lifespan of this project which can easily be adjusted as your child grows. For safety purposes we recommend that you secure your stand with hardware.

Vectric on Twitter: twitter.com/VectricLaser Etched CNC Project | Vectric FREE CNC Projects #shortsVectric Ltd2023-08-09 | Put the spark back into your personalized projects by using our Laser Module add-on within VCarve or Aspire to create this nostalgic Laser Family Tree on your CNC!
Todd shows you how easy it is to take advantage of the same drawing, machining and layout tools you already use to create your own family tree using CNC machining and hybrid laser etching; all within one package. Simply create your project, design which parts you want to cut on your CNC and your laser, then view the elements of the finished hybrid project in the 3D simulation.
Watch how Todd 3D carves the pine and walnut tree parts, ribbon and tag templates using VCarve moulding, pocket and 3D toolpaths. He then uses the Laser Module to add pictures and text, using the laser picture toolpath strategy to take bitmap images of the family and creates the tooling so the laser can etch them on to the tags. Then he uses the laser cut and fill tool to engrave individual names of his loved ones onto the tags. To really show off the power of the hybrid CNC, he laser etches a message on the curved surface of the ribbon. This can only be achieved because the software makes use of the “Z” travel of the CNC to keep the laser focused on the curved surface! He then finishes off by assembling all the wood layers together to create this unique free-standing gift.
Why not test the hybrid laser etching and add your family coat of arms to a flat surface or engrave a family quote or message onto a 3D model or shape like the ribbon model included FREE with this project! The combination of Vectric software and the Laser Module is a real winner as you can see how quickly and precisely you can make personalized projects for your shop, or create nostalgic anniversary or birthday gifts for your family in no time at all.

Vectric on Twitter: twitter.com/VectricMaking Tree Snack Tray Project | In the Labs at Christmas | Vectric FREE CNC ProjectsVectric Ltd2022-12-08 | In this month’s “In The Labs” at Christmas, Beki shows us how to make a Christmas Tree Tray as a stylish seasonal addition to your home this winter. Carve this project into your very own eye-catching centerpiece showing off the beautifully stripy Kiatt grain, perhaps as a coffee table snack tray for your festive favors or nutty nibbles, or even a wooden sorting board for your family board game pieces. This is a perfect project for users looking for practical adaptable décor for your Etsy shop or ornamental gifts for family and friends. Why not adapt yours into a tree for all seasons and v-carve a personal message then gift it to your special someone to use all year round as a handy key or coin storage.
Beki shows how to design this beautiful tree tray using VCarve to cleverly craft 3D effects using just 2.5D toolpaths. First Beki takes a phone photo of her sketch, imports the bitmap into the software to draw up the tree tray initial design, then using the fantastic new freehand drawing tool she creates the finished vectors by tracing and smoothing around the darker grey areas for the tree branches and base. She uses the offset tools to create the recess vectors and tops off the tree with a star. To machine, Beki chooses Kiatt to bring out the beautiful stripy grain. She uses a vcarve toolpath to draw out the star, a pocket toolpath to clear the recessed areas and creates the smooth dished walls using the molding toolpath, using the vary step-over option to create a much smoother shape. She offsets the tree and star vectors and welds them to use with the profile toolpath to cut the part out.
See how easy it is to create individually styled hassle-free projects for your Christmas store or home décor.

Vectric on Instagram: instagram.com/vectricltdMaking Christmas Countdown Project | In the Labs at Christmas | Vectric FREE CNC ProjectsVectric Ltd2022-12-07 | In this month’s “In The Labs” at Christmas, Todd shows us how to make a Christmas countdown desk calendar ideal for sprucing up your workspace or to add merriment to your Mantel using cartoon characters as a fun way to help you count the days to Yuletide. This is a perfect project for anyone looking for workshop ideas to create extra special seasonal home décor or make unique family gifts for your Christmas-themed Etsy shop. Why not get your children or grandchildren to help you add a dash of paint or fit some lights to bring your Christmas crafting to life and set the scene for wintry window displays, merry mantelpiece decorations, or snowy stocking fillers.
Todd shows you how to create this calendar frame with single-sided reindeer and gingerbread house models using two different techniques in Aspire. First he generates 3D clipart of the reindeer using the new speedy STL import functionality, then quickly models the gingerbread house converting a doodle sketch to vectors and uses the sculpting functionality to add organic shapes like the snow and chimney with the help of the new freehand drawing tool. Finally, he effortlessly models the front and back of the two-sided number blocks using the new live model composition tools. Todd machines the project in contrasting pine and pallet board to make the number blocks stand out then adds clear coat and a splash of white, red and brown paint to pick out the snow and reindeer features as a special finishing detail. See how easy it is to create individually styled hassle-free projects for your Christmas store or home décor.

Vectric on Instagram: instagram.com/vectricltdMaking Rudi Reindeer Project | In the Labs at Christmas | Vectric FREE CNC ProjectsVectric Ltd2022-12-06 | In this month’s “In The Labs” Christmassy sessions, Beki shows us how to make Rudi reindeer as a buddy for Snowman and Nordic Santa to join the family of two-sided projects created by Beki over the years. Inspired by Christmas cartoon characters, this cute reindeer is a fun way to help you decorate your home or create gifts for your friends and family, or for the more experienced users looking for ideas for your Etsy shop or to keep your kids busy helping with your Christmas crafting. Why not make your own family of two-sided Christmas critters to brighten up your mantel, spruce up your workshop, or create a unique chess set using all our double-sided characters!
Beki shows you how easy it is to create Rudi using simple shapes and double-sided tools in Aspire. Keeping the building blocks of the model to hand, she uses the create shape tool to quickly design the hooves, body, gloves, face, eyes, ears and nose and cropping his round feet using the split component tool to make him a stand-alone decoration. Beki shows how she created the fur texture using various sculpting tools and with the enhanced “show full model” option of version 11.5 she demonstrates how to sculpt individual components whilst having full visibility of the full Rudi model.
Making his 3D smile using the extrude tool to blend flat cross sections into a subtracted and recessed shape. With all of the individual elements modeled Beki uses her favorite modeling tool to “create a component from a visible model” to create the final composite, whilst still having access to all of the components that the model is built upon. With this being a two sided project Beki can easily take elements from the design and copy them over to the other side of the job all at the click of a button, where the software will flip the parts according to the flip direction she set. Beki show’s you how she set up her levels to include 3D tabs to hold the model to the material whilst its being machined as well as sharing a handy tip on how to avoid a cusped seam where she creates a negative base height to ensure the tooling machines below the zero plane. To ensure the two sides are aligned when the material is flipped over Beki shows us how to use the asymmetrical dowel placement method to ensure there is only one possible way that you can align the material to the spoil board during the flip process. To finish she then hand sands to remove the tabs and Rudi is ready for Santa’s sleigh!
Take a look at our range of video tutorials showing step-by-step the process of two-sided machining and get yourself up and running with your projects and see how easy it is to create individually styled hassle-free projects for your Christmas store or home décor.

With a message that appears and disappears with the light, this makes for a simple, fun and stylish way to help you decorate your home or create gifts for your Christmas-themed Etsy shop. Using the new and improved SVG import functionality, Todd opens the files directly in VCarve adjusting artwork features to customize the message and make it his own. This quick and easy project is perfect for all those amateur gamers or families with kids who love to play video games. If you game on platforms like Twitch, why not make this project into a personalized prop or backdrop, or a team trophy for those friends who want to 'slick up' their team spirit and create an award for those with the highest skill set. For those who organize video game competitions or manage virtual reality venues, why not adapt it into a sign or unique gaming gift to help build your brand and boost your business!
Beki will show you how she quickly models the plywood station leaving a spot to v-carve your name, message or logo. Vectric on Twitter: twitter.com/VectricMaking a Trinket Tray | In the Labs with Beki | Vectric FREE CNC ProjectsVectric Ltd2022-07-19 | In this month’s “In the Labs” project, Beki shows us how to design and make a beautifully styled trinket tray for jewellery such as earrings, necklaces and delicates you don’t want to get in a tangle. Alternatively, why not think outside the box and upscale the model to make a cufflink store, fruit bowl or even a snack serving dish as a centrepiece for your dining table. An ideal beginner’s guide to 2-sided machining, this project takes you through the step-by-step process of modelling the top side in Aspire, helping you create dowel hole location points then using the handy ‘reverse’ and ‘auto locate’ tools to copy them to the other side before setting your toolpaths. This functionality allows you to cut one side of the bowl then flip to reposition and machine the underside another day – perfect if you run out of time or want to turn your machine off overnight and return to it another time without losing technical information on the layup.
For the more advanced user, this project provides an opportunity for a fun, quick and easy project to make as a gift, a practical addition to your dressing table or a fully customizable product to sell on your online store.
