The One Voice series showcases the diversity of vocal styles from around the world while exploring the issues facing vocalists in the music industry today. Join these artists as we explore the fascinating journey of the human voice through their own diverse career paths and unique approaches to song. In this evocative 25-minute episode film filled with the extraordinary sounds, young singer and composer Yijia Tu guides us though the concept of identity in the music industry, while exploring the challenges around how music from around the world is often labelled. Yijia was as a semi-finalist in the popular Chinese singer-songwriter talent show Sing My Song at the age of 16, from where she was plunged into stardom. Yijia released her debut album 17 with Sony Records and won several awards, including the ‘Media’s Choice Award’ at the 2015 Chinese Music Awards. Yijia was also nominated as ’Best New Chinese Artist’ at the Chinese Media Music Awards in the same year. After all these achievements, in 2016 Yijia moved to London to study and further explore her own musical identity. In this introspective and personal journey, Yijia reflects on the importance for artists to stick to their musical principles and passions. By doing so, she hopes to keep tradition alive and expand and diversify people’s musical taste and knowledge about cultures other than their own. The creativity of this proposal is infused with a huge respect for the devotion that Homo sapiens experiments for music-making, a passion that unites when circumstances divide, crossing continents and vast expanses of time, from Deep History to the present day — an ode to universal human aspects already identified by our ancestors and that define modern mankind.There is a general trend in music to work towards more experimental and creative undertakings, that look at delivering music in new and more engaging ways, building up new bridges for cultural discussion and that can be didactic without sacrificing the quality and still remaining a transmitter of powerful emotions. The main objectives of this project are to offer young musicians and vocalist the opportunity to showcase their talent within the framework of a captivating new narrative, whilst indulging and educating our audience. One Voice: Episode One (Teaser) Asia House 2020-10-19 | The Sages (竹林七贤) is a new world music fusion band project based in London that draws inspirations from different music elements throughout time and history. With the main focus on traditional East Asian music, the band consists of young students currently studying at SOAS, University of London. As a diverse cosmopolitan generation growing up under an age of globalization and other social changes, the band aims to explore the concepts between “East” and “West”, cultural identity and musical “genres” through both original composition and adaption of traditional folk music. “The Sages 竹林七贤” is a reference to a group of 7 literati, artists and scholars in ancient China who chose to escape mundane and hypocritical secular life and status to live in the remote natural countryside with the companionship of music, poetry, art (and wine) in search of a higher spiritual fulfilment.
