The Growth of New York City: Every Year Ollie Bye 2021-06-17 | The growth of New York City from its origins as the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, to the sprawling metropolis of today.*Notes regarding the urban area and population*1) The definition of what counts as ‘New York City’ (both its population and area) is highly subjective. This is mainly due to sprawling, low-density suburbs typical of North American cities, as well as the varying official definitions (e.g. the Five Boroughs, the Metropolitan Statistical Area, etc.) I’ve tried to portray the city’s size in a reasonable way, but it’s by no means the only way. Other maps and statistics may vary significantly from what this video shows for this reason. 2) In the post-war era, NYC’s urban area has extended along New Jersey and Long Island beyond what is shown in the map. These are outside the map because showing them would force it to zoom to an impractically large area. These areas are still included in the population statistics where applicable, as explained in note 4.3) The “rural area” in this video mostly consists of low-density suburbs after about 1970. They do not constitute contiguous built up areas, but rather areas of sporadic building. For this reason, they cannot be shown as urban. These areas are still included in the population statistics where applicable, as explained in note 4.4) Post-war population figures are based on the New York–Newark–Jersey City Statistical Area. The History of Burma Ollie Bye 2019-03-11 | The history of Burma begins with several city-states inhabited by the Pyu People along the Irrawaddy River from c. 200 BCE. During the 11th Century, they were united under the Kingdom of Pagan, laying the foundations of the Burmese state. Burdended by tax-exempt Buddhist monastaries in the 13th Century, Pagan became easy prey for Mongol armies, who destroyed the kingdom in 1297.Several weaker states followed over the coming centuries, such as Myinsaing, Pinya and Ava. Burma was again revaged in the early 16th Century by Shan peoples to the north, cultimating in the destruction of Ava in 1527. From the ruins, a new Toungoo Dynasty emerged and began to dominate South East Asia for the next two centuries.Political turmoil in the 18th Century lead to the rise of the Konbaung Dynasty, which ruled all of Burma until it was conquered by the British Empire through three wars between 1824-85. The History of Wessex Ollie Bye 2018-11-30 | Around 495 CE, a Saxon chieftain named Cerdic arrived in Britain, and by 519 CE had established the Kingdom of the West Saxons (Wessex). During the 6th Century, his successors continued to expand against local Celtic kingdoms.By the 7th Century, the now Christian kingdom was competing with another Anglo-Saxon Kingdom, Mercia, for supremacy. This continued during the 8th Century, as the kingdom fell under Mercian lordship several times.Weakened by Dane raids in the 9th Century, Mercia lost supremacy to Wessex. The kingdom lead the defense of Britain as the last independent Anglo-Saxon Kingdom, under King Alfred the Great. The History of Vietnam Ollie Bye 2018-10-28 | Vietnam is one of Southeast Asia's oldest civilisations. From 300 BCE, various dynasties ruled over the north, which was often subject to Chinese rule, whilst several Champa states existed in the south.The final long period of Chinese rule was shaken off in the 10th Century, allowing the northern dynasties to expand south into the Champa domain. The country's unity broke down in 1527 when the Mac Dynasty overthrew the Le Dynasty. The Nguyen and Trinh lords resisted the Mac takeover, and gradually destroyed the Mac Dynasty, leaving them in control.A brief period of unity followed when a peasant revolt began in the 1770s, although the Nguyen lords were able to eventually put it down and rule a united Vietnam. This ended in 1885, when a protectorate was established by France over the entire country.After independence in the 1950s, two new states emerged - North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The History of Ethiopia Ollie Bye 2018-08-02 | What is now Ethiopia emerged from obscurity in the 10th Century BCE, in the form of the Kingdom of D'mt. This was followed by Aksum around 100 CE, which went on to forge an empire stretching from Nubia to Arabia.Following the collapse of Aksum, Ethiopia was split into many small states, chief among them the Zagwe Dynasty. This dynasty flourished until 1270, when it was overthrown by the Solomonic Dynasty, which went on to unite almost all of Ethiopia in the 14th Century under king Amda Seyon I. From the 15th century onwards it declined under constant pressure from various Somali sultanates to the east, before fracturing into several lordships in the 18th Century.Finally in 1852, Tewodros II began to reunite the country. Ethiopia began expanding outwards thereafter, giving it the necessary strength to ward of the Italian Empire in 1896. The 20th Century was comparatively worse; following Italian occupation in 1936-41, the country faced famine, uprisings and revolution in the coming decades.
