However, I broke down and cut this recording up. With three jam sessions and loads of poorly aged banter, there was a lot of fat to cut to keep this listenable to the layman. This session was taken from an on-air performance on the show "Chill Out and Die" on KDVS 90.3 FM in Davis, California, on 07/26/2006. It's a sloppy performance. Trotsky slurs and stumbles through the covers like a drunk. There's several guitar flubs. One guitarist loaned his amp to a friend, forgetting about the radio show, and had to play through the host's bass amp, hence the lack of distortion on one guitar. However, in terms of energy and overall sound quality, I think it's their best recording. It's also the only recording to feature "Death From Above" and "Deus Ex Machina," two of their strongest songs. This CD was only available at their last show, at Woodhaven Lanes in Woodland, alongside local crusties, Planetary Ruins, and Syphilites side project, the Orgasms (flyer pictured in the video). In lieu of a proper label, the CDs had caricatures and quotes of different band members taped to the discs with packaging tape, making them unplayable in certain CD players. The pictured disc features the drummer, who insisted on going by Lobster, because everyone else already had cool nicknames.

Starting as a Crimpshrine inspired pop punk group, they shifted towards post-hardcore just before breaking up, hence this song's jerkiness. This track was featured on a compilation CD for Bitchface Zine vol. 1, which focused on punk from the Middle East, North Africa, and their diasporas. The Poonteens barely fit that criteria, but were happy to be featured on a mix with the likes of the Fearless Iranians From Hell and Demokhratia. This track was recorded in studio at KDVS in Davis by Fenris Wolf in 2010, I believe.

This came out on the Dutch label, Underground Punk Support, and features 7 bands from Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. It's a typical mix of 90's political hardcore with elements of powerviolence, youth crew, and grind sprinkled in and the crunchy, trebly production that was standard for that era. I did try to bring up the bass a little bit on this rip. Sin Dios are the champions of Spanish anarcho-punk and the highest profile act on this mix. However, "Solidaridad" leans more towards hardcore than the melodic, diatribe anarcho they're known for. Despite opening on Sin Dios, this record isn't totally front loaded. My favorite track is at the end with "More Lemmings" by Holland's Boycot. The hyper d-beats and fazed out vocals really make it stand out. Germany's Dekadent impressed me with the range of vocal styles they fit into a single hardcore song. The backing singer alternates between crusty gutturals and more straightforward hardcore growls, while the lead vocalist has a nasal growl that breaks into periodic thrashy screeches. The latter gets really fun in the breakdown. I have less to say about the other tracks, but they are all solid.

I found this tape at Sherry's Vinyl Zamalek, in Cairo, picking out a handful of cassettes based on their artwork alone. I have found zero information about this album online. If anyone knows anything about it, please offer it up in the comments. What I can tell you is that it's in Urdu and that it was released on Super Tapes, presumably in the 1980s. The Discogs profile of Super describes it as a: "Cassette label from the Middle East. Releases are known to have been available in Egypt and Yemen and are said to be counterfeit. Some of the tapes mention 'Made in Singapore.'" Pakistani music is an area I am fully ignorant about, and cannot say what genre this falls under, but, between the surf guitars and psychedelic keys, I'd call it either of those two categories. This was ripped from a dirty old cassette. I cleaned it up to the best of my ability, but there are some hisses and crackles I don't have the skills to remove. Anyway, I've said this channel is about uploading media in the condition I found it in, warts and all, so I don't know why I'm even trying to clean this up.

As a teenage punk volunteering at my local college radio station, I came across these guys' debut LP, Challenge, because of its proximity to the Casualties in the station's library. I couldn't tell what was going on on the album cover, but it looked punk or crossover. I was put off by picture on the back, where they were all wearing Casualty shirts, but I listened anyway. It was good Mystic Records inspired hardcore punk reminiscent of Ill Repute and early NOFX. Well, this 7" came out in 1991 and, by this time, most remaining 80s hardcore bands had gotten more melodic, if not full on post-hardcore. This record is still on the punkier side of that, but clearly takes notes from Dag Nasty or the Stupids' later material. I should add that they had relocated to Australia by this time, if that means anything to anyone.

Messiah Complex Records 1991Tony Boom Boom Badea- Tears May FallMaximum Efficiency2022-11-29 | This a big step away from my usual punk type content. I know very little about freestyle. My interest in punk brought me to industrial, minimal wave, and other punk-adjacent synth genres. These in turn brought me to hi-NRG and Italo disco and that brought freestyle to my attention. I don't really know the defining features of it, but I think I'm at a point that I can tell it from other electronic genres. So I found this tape at an antique store and got it solely, because it said “freestyle.” This is a radio mix made by DJ Tony “Boom Boom” Badea who hosted a program on WCYC 90.5 FM on the Southside of Chicago. Operated by the Boys and Girls Club of Chicago, the station was allegedly the first radio station in the US run by teenagers. Under the program director, Harv Roman, the WCYC became Chicago's home for freestyle. This tape has very little information on it. No date and no tracklist. I've figured out the tracks for most of it, but there might be some holes in the list. If any freestyle heads want to chime in with those missing tracks, feel free. Warning: the tape starts to warble on and off around 35 minutes in and gets worse as it goes on.

I picked up this 7" for $3 not knowing a thing about it, but that it looked kinda punk, came out in 1985, the lyrics sheet included songs about nuclear disarmament and apartheid, and a New Jersey mailing address. All indicators of a mediocre-at-worst punk/hardcore record. I did some searching and, once I figured out the name wasn't "Famous Cheez Cake," I learned that the seemingly only other band on their label, Faith Records, was America's favorite straightedge comedy act: Crucial Youth. Considering that Crucial Youth, Fanous Cheezcake, and Faith Records all hailed from Holmdel, New Jersey, I'm going to guess that Fanous and Crucial Youth shared some, if not all, members and that someone in these bands operated Faith Records. Big assumptions, I know. The fact that Fanous singer, Dave Madsen, apes Ian MacKaye's vocals to the point of parody further supports my theory. Unlike Crucial Youth, these guys have pretty straight forward and earnest lyrics, with typical punk themes like, nukes, apartheid, and disconformity. The only joke song on this record is a short one called "Mikey's Not Dead," which claims the rumored death of LIFE cereal's Mikey(by ingesting Pop Rocks and Coke) was a hoax perpetuated by the tabloid press. I know my uploads are sometimes rough, but I swear to god this 7" was actually recorded this raw and all the vocal spikes are part of the original vinyl experience. This is evident, because the two live songs at the end sound much much cleaner than the studio tracks on the rest of the record. Also, I'm going to take a moment to chastise the band for being so lazy with their cover layout that the tracklist came out upside down on the back. Shame on you. Regardless, it's a good record. I mainly picked this up for the Political Asylum and Mushroom Attack tracks. I'm not sure what influences Political Asylum would cite, but I usually describe them as an anarcho band that got really into Husker Du. At a time when more UK bands were drawing influence from American hardcore, I find interesting the bands that went the post-hardcore route, Can't Decide and later-HDQ also come to mind. I've never heard of Silent Water, but they basically sound just like Political Asylum, but acoustic and it's great. Mushroom Attack have a song about squatting, as they tend to do. I don't know why the artist isn't listed for the Undertones cover, but apparently it's Pink Turds in Space. Indian Dream is probably the most typical anarcho sounding band on the comp, maybe even a little dated for 1992, and their track rules. Also, Hiatus is on there. This was put out on Be Yourself Records (in collaboration with Bonds of Friendship Records), who I recognize from the Scraps' "Wrapped Up in This Society" LP. What a record!

Three quarters of this record consists of Sacramento area noise rock/post-hardcore artists: Gift of Goats, Corpse Fucks Corpse, and Get Get Go. All three of these bands were clearly under the influence of record labels like Vermiform, ThreeOneG, and Quarterstick. You might even call some these tracks chaotic-emo. I don't want to call them that, but a lot of these song names are a little too long and obnoxiously tongue-in-cheek. JonnyX and the Groadies stand out, in that they aren't exactly noise rock or from Sacramento, but a drum machine black metal group from Portland. As you might surmise from their name, they didn't take themselves very seriously for a black metal band. Less than a decade later, they might be called "hipster black metal," but I don't think anyone was putting those words together like that in 2003. Regardless, these dudes were wearing LED-covered tutus and playing hella loud synthy black metal with some noise rock and grindcore leanings. I think it's good.

The tracklist on the back only lists the band names, so I never knew what any of these songs were called until I looked it up on Discogs today. I mean obviously I recognized the "Breaking the Law" cover by Sawn Off, but I used to think that was Lost World, because I didn't realize Sawn Off had two tracks on here. There's plenty of unnecessary negative space on the back. If I put this out, I'd have the whole tracklist right there. There was a lot of great crust and hardcore in the 90's. For some people it was the heyday of those genres. I do love a lot of bands from that decade, but there was a lot of mediocrity too. I would say the best is well represented here.

(1987)Maximum Efficiency2020-12-12 | An international punk comp made in collaboration between California's Mordam Records and Netherlands' Konkurrel Records. This is part of a short series of records and zines made by the two labels, which directly benefited Umkhonto We Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress in South Africa. The record came with a sleek 20 page booklet on the history of apartheid resistance, which I would have loved to include in the video, but it's just more than anyone is going to want to read in a youtube upload. There's a few really jammy tracks. There's some more traditional rock songs, but the majority of the songs here fit under the umbrella of hardcore punk. Every track is superb and it's hard to pick any particular stand out songs, but Everything Falls Apart and Kafka Prosess always surprise me with their jarring intensity, relative to the rest of the record.

I knew little to nothing about it, until Google translating the Russian Wikipedia page, so whatever information I have to share about this LP is coming from that. Apparently Panorama '86 was the first ever government sanctioned rock festival in Moscow. However, this. If I'm understanding this correctly, some of the tracks for this LP were taken live for the festival, however many were recorded in studio for this "live" album and some of those studio tracks were never even performed at the original festival. In fact the cover of the record features guitarist, Igor Romanov, who did not perform or take any part in the festival. That's about all I know about this record. It has an interesting mix of genres that I can best describe as hard rock, psychedelic, new wave, pop, ska, and country.

However this is significantly better than the Flieswatters release. There's a spikey logo. There's some anarchy and equality symbols on it. You know what it is: some 90s American crust. For the most part, I would compare this to bands like Nausea and Filth with a couple of sludgier tracks in the mix. I used to know the year this came out, but I don't remember and it's not mentioned on the record or it's Discogs page. I believe it came out somewhere between 1998 and 2000. Members of this band went on to form Planetary Ruin, who played a similar style of crust around the Sacramento area. When I was in high school, the Planetary Ruins folks were the only other punks I knew of in Woodland, besides my bandmates, and the only older punks I had to look up to in my hometown. They definitely helped influence my shift away from street punk and towards crust and other heavier types of punk.

A buncha high schoolers from Davis, Ca, attempting to play indie rock, and for the most part they succeeded, but these songs veer into weird artpunk/Killed By Death territory, particularly the opening track. According to their mission statement, Panx Records aim was to put out one international compilation or split 7" every two months. This 12" is the first and only Panx record I've personally picked up, but judging by the wild amount of Panx 7"s I've encountered, I would guess that they more or less accomplished their goal and continued to do so well into the 90s. Three bands playing in a more typical US hardcore style. Everyone knows Vatican Commandos for briefly featuring Moby on bass. Did you know they played sick hardcore too? It's true. President Fetch and Random Killing also play in a more typical US hardcore style, except President Fetch sounds a little more referential of European hardcore bands like the Stupids, Crowd of Isolated, and Spermbirds. Pin Prick stands out on the mix, playing a more UK82/Oi sound. I know everyone loves French oi these days.

Unfortunately for this album, they happen to be the last three songs. Early 80s power pop/new wave from Sacramento. I think I found this at the Goodwill in West Sac. The only other copy I've seen was at KDVS. Side A is a little scratched up and there are a couple short skips. I tried my best to clean it up, but until someone with a better copy decides to upload theirs, you'll just have to deal with the two or three small skips. Members of this band went on to play in Steel Breeze and Pride in Peril, but that's about all I know about them. Also, if you look real closely at the picture on the back, you might notice that the keyboard player is wearing a Cats shirt.

I saw them play in a coffee shop in Davis, Ca, around 2004. They were from LA. They called themselves a mod band, but they didn't really sound like one, just some energetic garagey punk. The vocals are nasal and reminiscent of bands like Crucifucks and Feederz. I guess they dressed kinda mod. The artwork is mod. So I guess they were at least 2/3rds a mod band. You know, the kinda bands that would have song names like "When We Ate Each Other's Fingers" or "All I Think About is Blood." In the early 2000s, Omnibus Records was holding down the Sacramento area in the style of hardcore popularized by labels like Vermiform Records and Three One G. I forget who played what exactly, but Gift of Goats featured Mick Mucus and Upside Dan from Anal Mucus, Girls' Soccer, Feces Munchers, the Turdwrenchers, Unkut:Hunks, and probably some other bands. Drummer, Jay Howell, previously played in the Sacramento post-hardcore outfit, Shove, and has since made a name for himself as an artist and animator, creating Nickelodeon's Sanjay and Craig and even the original character designs for Bob's Burgers. Bassist, Mark Kaiser, was also in Shove and has since gone on to play in the Mayyors, Male Gaze, and Julian Never. Guitarist, Justin Kable, was the general manager at KDVS for a while and that's all I know about him. This is actually the third installment in DJ Lobo's tape series, following volume 1 and 0. The first tape was from 1996, but I don't have a date on this one. As before, we got almost and hour and a half of punk in Spanish. However, the comp ends with a few tracks by Razzia, Jingo de Lunch, and Upright Citizens, from Germany, as well as one and a half songs by Bad Religion. I suppose DJ Lobo had some extra tape to fill. Unlike the previous installments, I actually tried to clean up some of the noise on this tape. So, you're welcome. **Youtube initially blocked this video over copyright infringement. I tried to work around it, but in the end had to remove three tracks: two songs by Los Violadores and "Anticristo" by Ultimo Resorte. It's a bummer, because Anticristo is one of the hardest tracks on the mix, but that still leaves us with 35 1/2 songs, which is not too bad.

I'm not ashamed of being frugal. Theater of Ice were pioneers of Arizona death rock. That state was weird in the 80s. It seems like for all the different styles and sounds coming out of the LA punk scene, there was often an Arizona band doing a fucked up desert version of that sound. That's not to say Arizona was copying LA. Forming in 1978 to produce a horror soundtrack, Theatre of Ice predates Christian Death by a year. While generally categorized as death rock, the band's sound varies from goth, to psychedelic, to garage. Their musical range is well represented on this 1990 7". The record opens with a guitar heavy death rock track, leading into a horror instrumental, and then a proggy punk track similar to Planet Gong. Side B features a cover of In-a-gadda-da-vida and concludes with a garagey track reminiscent of the Twinkeyz.

Following the breakup of Strike Under, Bjorklund released three EPs and one LP under the name, Breaking Circus, with a revolving cast of backing musicians. This was a bonus 7" released with issue #4 of the punk zine, the Pope. By this point, the notoriously disagreeable Bjorklund had run out of backing musicians willing to play with him and made this 7' with a drum machine and synthesizer, rather than band. But that's part of what makes this record great. The previous Breaking Circus recordings were significantly more guitar-oriented post-punk, whereas this is basically a minimal-wave record. Furthermore, the two tracks are not his own, but post-punk interpretations of two earlier punk songs: "Home of the Brave" by Naked Raygun and UK Subs' "Warhead." Frankly, I enjoy these covers more than the originals. Of their four releases this ties with his first EP, The Very Long Fuse, for my favorite.

(1997)Maximum Efficiency2020-11-24 | I'm uploading this one more out of personal interest, than actually trying to share some good punk, because this isn't good punk. It's sort of street punk. It's ignorant and has a mohawk dude on the front, but I'd say this record comes closer to bands like Quincy Punx. They even misspelled their band name. It's not a cool misspelling, like replacing "ks" with an "x," so I'm assuming they just didn't know how to spell "flyswatter." Like many punk records from the time, most of the songs have irrelevant movie samples at the beginning. HOWEVER, I'm sharing this, because it is one of only two punk 7 inches to ever come out of my hometown, Woodland, Ca, and I want it documented. The "thank you" section is a who's-who of 90s Sacramento area punk bands, including: Society's Disease, No Comply, Hoods, Buckies, Lesdystics, Scenes from the Struggle, and Majestic 12. Mick Mucus, from Anal Mucus, is thanked as "Mick Musus." In fact, there's several typos that nobody corrected before putting this record to print on "fly guts" green vinyl. I remember being told that the track, "Zombie Wonderland," was about the opening of the Yolo County Fair Mall, but, looking at the lyrics, I'm pretty sure it's just a zombie song about literal zombies. Maybe I'm too hard on it. It's a fine enough record, but most importantly it's a relic of hometown punk history. the more I stare at that "Woodland Connection" logo on the back, the more I'm think about getting a tattoo of it. Sometime soon I'll have to upload the other Woodland 7 inch, the much better "Depletion E.P.' by Society's Disease.

Another installment in the mixtape series by Milwaukee's DJ Lobo, "Lucha !!," from 1996, I believe. Unlike the previous volume, which predominantly featured punk bands from Spain, this tape has a broad selection of artists from all over the Spanish speaking world. Unfortunately, the tape runs out part way into the final song, but that's just how mixtapes are sometimes.

This is a part of a series of mixtapes of punk in Spanish from the 80s and 90s, assembled by Milwaukee's Guillermo Razo, otherwise known as, DJ Lobo. I believe this was originally made around 1996, but I will have to confirm that with DJ Lobo, when I get a chance. The majority of the bands are from Spain, with the exception of a few, which I marked. I have three of these mixtapes and all except this one are labeled with a volume #, so I guess we can consider it "volume 0" or "volume ?" for the time being. Hopefully, I can clarify all this with DJ Lobo and update this description later. If you're ever in the Milwaukee area, I recommend looking up mr Lobo. His distro has the best selection of international punk and metal in Milwaukee, if not all of Wisconsin. One of the tracks repeats, the volume levels vary greatly. It's an old mixtape. Deal with it.

The majority of the tracks were taken from a previous Polish punk comp, Jak Punk to Punk. I was listening to a lot of Armia and Siekiera when my partner got this for me. Armia is particularly interesting in their incorporation of french horn into their UK82/anarcho inspired sound. Dezerter, the first Polish punk band to receive a release in the US, courtesy of Maximum RocknRoll, employ a whistle in their track "Spytaj Milicjanta Uleglosc." The Jak Punk to Punk comp was released in 1986, the same year as Siekiera's first LP Nowa Aleksandria, which featured "Ja Stoje, Ja Tancze, Ja Wacze." If you caught the United Mutation reference in the name, then you probably guessed that this is some weirdo noisy hardcore, and it is. These guys came out in that transition period between the decline of "mysterious guy hardcore" and the rise of raw hardcore bands like Hoax and Gag, a time when a lot of bands were seeking comparisons to United Mutation. The tape sometimes veers into post hardcore/chaotic emo territory, but not too much for us non-emo-enjoying type folks. For whatever reason, the first track is not listed on the tape insert, but maybe someday we'll learn its name.

Then shortly after that, a buncha bands got even more hesh with it, mixing hardcore punk with Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy. That's what these Washingtonians play, but much slower than other stoner punk bands, jamming out 3 songs over this 20+ minute tape. If I recall correctly, I believe members of this band also played in Family Stoned, Spiritual Warriors, Transfix, Crude Thought and more. It's heavy, but more importantly it's objectively good. I'm not sure if all 100 copies of this tape even hit the street before the band realized it was practically unlistenable. I think I started listening to this tape once, but it was too awful. The songs were good, but the magnetic tape sounded like it had been rolled over by endless bowling balls before getting entombed in plastic. I don't see anyone flipping this on Discogs, but I bet I'm sitting on a goldmine with this cassette. I'm sure the band's not proud of this early hiccup in their career, and I mean them no disrespect, but I believe the internet deserves documentation of these mistakes. I think this was from 2006. I can't find the date. It might be 2005, but for the sake of the upload, I'm goin with 2006. Whenever I look up the band, all I find is articles on the genetic disorder they're named after. This was just prior to rise of "mysterious guy hardcore" and bands loved withholding crucial details, like recording dates, from their releases. If I was putting out this stuff, I'd make all the basic information; dates, band members, lyrics, etc; easy to find and in a clear legible font. None of this mysterious stuff. These guys were kind enough to at least mention that they were from the SF Bay Area, but not which city, and I personally forget. The phone number listed on the insert has an Alameda County area code, so I'm gonna guess Concord. I tried to clean up the recording as best as I can, but the tape is old, it warbles, and the original recording isn't great either. I'm trying.
