Stephanie Wiedeman wishes now that she had run for Thornton Township Supervisor in the April 2025 elections — although she recognizes that Napoleon Harris's choice to hold a caucus instead of a primary squashed that opportunity for her. She's now running for Thornton Township Democratic Committeeperson, partly because that's the next available election (March 17, 2026), but also because she believes the role provides an opportunity to rebuild trust and reinvigorate voter engagement.

This vision for an involved electorate, she says, is different from Napoleon Harris's vision.

In our interview, Wiedeman defended Harris's right to have his own vision for the township, and she defended his right to make choices (about his salary increase, for example) that are questionable but not criminal.

He explained how everything works and answered all our questions. After the tour, we bowled three games and had a lot of fun. Universal Martial Arts Ministry (3517 Ridge Road, Lansing IL) hosted a national taekwondo tournament last month involving 70 students from 6 different martial arts academies across the country. Because of the space required, the tournament was hosted at Oak Lawn Park District Community Pavilion in Oak Lawn, Illinois. It was an all-day tournament, and The Lansing Journal spent the morning there shooting video and learning about the different events. With more than 40 students representing Lansing in 4 different judging rings for 9 different events, it was difficult to capture everything. This video includes the opening ceremonies demonstration by the team from Junguyae Martial Arts in Seattle, WA. At the public hearing for Lansing's upcoming budget, Michael Hersom was the only resident to speak during public comment. He had done his homework — reviewing the budget ahead of time and coming prepared with three specific points he wanted to make:
1. Lansing needs to do something about abandoned buildings throughout town.
2. Lansing should help residents with tree trimming in the parkways.
3. Lansing needs to be proactive about creating activities for youth.

Finance Director Brian Hanigan and Mayor Brian Hardy were able to provide some answers during the meeting.

Opening Day at VanDerGriends Farm Market - fresh corn, Michigan blueberries, and family traditions

VanDerGriends Farm Market is a family-owned farm stand that is locally famous for its sweet corn, blueberries, and other fresh produce. The stand opens in May to sell flowers, then closes during the month of June until the corn is ready to harvest. Opening Day for produce is determined by when the sweet corn is ready.

Managing Editor Carole Sharwarko was at VanDerGriends on Opening Day 2025 along with people from throughout the region, including Ken and Karen from Calumet City, Julie from Crete, Ruth from Lansing, Lou from South Holland, and Katherine from Chicago Heights. Third-generation owner Scott VanDerGriend explained why the corn is so good, why the blueberries are popular, and how the family business was started by a six-year-old with a table by the roadside.
