I created my logo for the channel in Sketchup, 3D printed it, then made a rammed sand mold for it and cast it in aluminum. Backyard Foundry Safety Norbert Makes 2019-10-19 | In this episode I go over just one aspect of potential safety hazards for those of us doing Backyard Aluminum casting and that is spilling molten aluminum on your foot. I take a look at what can happen by simulating an accidental aluminum spill onto your foot. I used raw chicken breasts (bone in) and place them into some socks and two of my youngest son’s size 16 shoes. I was somewhat surprised at what I witnessed. You can do your best to prevent this but some sort of accident is bound to happen. First Aluminium Casting Norbert Makes 2019-07-23 | On this episode I cast my very first aluminum piece, a sand rammer, that I got the 3D files from @SWDWEEB, so I can better compact my sand molds instead of using a rubber mallet. With some help from my son we cast our first part and learn things from it. Always a fun time melting aluminium at 1200°+ F (actually got it upwards of 1600°F per my trusty temperature probe) in 100°F degree weather wearing not enough safety gear. It was not a perfect casting, but not a bad one either. There were definite imperfections from some sand having dislodged inside the mold and the part had effects from shrinkage. But other than that, it was AWESOME!Yeah, on the topic of safety gear, its necessary 100% of the time, every time. When @SWDWEEB critiqued my previous video of casting the Maker Plaque, there were a couple of comments on his video and mine about safety and some of my poor safety habits with respect to pouring. I have since the airing of that video upped my game on safety. I have a better apron that has full sleeves and I bought boot covers as well. While this is not perfect in any way, it is much better than what I was doing and cheaper to but that safety gear than to pay the physical price for burns and then the medical bills. So, with that in mind, I plan a test later on this summer to see what could possibly happen if you have an accident pouring aluminum.
